Whether you're shopping for a new car or a new cell phone plan, almost all merchandise operates on a unique cycle—and that means you can save money if you just know when to shop, says Mandy Walker, senior editor at ShopSmart magazine. Jean talks with Mandy about the best times to buy some common items in order to get the best deals.

When to Shop for…

  • Computers: These tend to go on sale in July and August during the back-to-school frenzy, Mandy says.
  • Appliances: If you're looking for a new appliance such as a refrigerator or dishwasher, try shopping in May or June, when new models are coming in and great deals can be had on older ones, she says.
  • Cell phone plans: Whenever your current service is up is really the best time to land the best plan, Mandy says. Many providers will contact you with competitive offers too. "Start to shop around and find the best plan for you," she says.
  • Cars: A good time to buy a car is at the end of the year—November or December—as well as the end of the month, when sales associates are trying to meet quotas, Mandy says. Also, look around online and be sure to negotiate for the best price, she says.
