At 32, Marion was a wife and mother of two young sons when she was diagnosed with both breast cancer and cervical cancer. Marion underwent two back-to-back operations and six months of chemotherapy, and says the grueling stress ended her marriage. Marion soon found herself with no health insurance, no savings, no job experience and no self-esteem. Motivated by the need to care for her two sons, Marion says she managed to pull herself together, and put her skills as a homemaker into a résumé.

After 17 failed attempts, Marion finally landed herself an unlikely job as a salesman at a car dealership. Despite the obstacles she faced as a woman in a male-dominated field, Marion soon sold her first car, and within four years had opened her own car dealership! Now a best-selling author, speaker and businesswoman, Marion reveals the top qualities she believes are necessary for success.

  3. Intuition

  5. Passion
  6. Self value
  7. Sensitivity

How to Be a Successful Saleswoman:

  • Demonstrate to the other person what's in it for them. "Navigating your way through life requires an ability to promote yourself and persuade others of your point of view, and that's what sales is all about," Marion says.
  • A "disease to please" and oversensitivity can get in the way of success. Don't let a need for approval from others become the CEO in our lives, Marion says
  • Every obstacle is an opportunity to get in touch with your real potential, Marion says. "You can cope with that tragedy, you can cope with that obstacle, or you can choose to convert it and to rise above it. … That to me is the definition of optimism," she says.
  • Negotiating is not a contest, Marion says, it's about communication and getting the needs of both parties met.
