Conquering College Costs

Oprah.com   |   October 18, 2006
Jean Chatzky
The cost of sending your children to college is skyrocketing. Next to buying a home, getting the kids through school has become the huge family investment. What can you do to help get your kids through the college years and keep you out of the poor house? Jean talks with Ben Kaplan, author of How to Go to College Almost for Free, about alternatives and shortcuts to paying college tuition.

Ben, the self-procalimed "scholarship coach," was just a teenager when he began seeking ways to afford college. After applying for dozens of scholarships over the course of about a year, he raised almost $90,000—just enough to cover his Harvard tuition. Ben talks to Jean about taking intelligent, creative and proactive measures to win scholarships and graduate from college debt free.
