Jean and Jeri Sedlar
For more than a decade, husband-and-wife team Jeri Sedlar and Rick Miners paired job-seeking professionals with corporations through their executive search practice. Today they're helping retirement-aged workers find new and fulfilling careers with their book, Don't Retire, REWIRE!. Jean talks to Jeri about the book and about the best ways to identify what career you should choose later in life.

Today, many people continue working after the traditional retirement age, whether it's for financial reasons or because they're passionate about their work. If you want to continue working but you're not sure what you're passionate about, Jeri suggests asking yourself these questions: What made me happy when I was younger? What would I love to do if money were no object?

Another way to help you find a new career that you will love is to identify what drives you in the workplace, Jeri says. "You have to know what it is that really makes you tick," she says. Maybe you appreciate getting a pat on the back for a job well done, or perhaps you enjoy interacting with different people every day. No matter what drives you as an employee, Jeri says it's important that those same drivers are present in your new career.

Once you identify some career areas that appeal to you, Jeri suggests learning about the jobs through one of these avenues:
  • Take a class at a community college.
  • Offer your services as a volunteer.
  • Shadow someone or get an internship.
