When it comes to home renovations, it's not uncommon for things to get complicated. Nate talks with contractor Keith Druek about his tips for a successful home renovation.

Keith says many people are unaware of all the details that go into the remodeling process. "I think the biggest scare people have is who to hire and how many dollars they can afford to spend," he says. "It's an investment, and people need to understand that and do things in the right fashion and check out companies that are coming into your home."

Tips for a Successful Home Renovation:

  • Have a realistic budget in mind. A good contractor will want to work with you on a design that is within your budget, Keith says.
  • Get recommendations from professionals in your area. Investigate who you are thinking about hiring. Keith says it's important to not only check references, but also to visit the projects on site. Ground work is essential, he says.
  • Speak up. If you are unhappy with something that is being done during the remodeling process, let someone know. "More than anything, I think that clients need to direct their conversation toward the manager or whoever is on charge of that project," Keith says. "If there is something you want to change, by all means—you live here, we don't."
  • Don't focus solely on trying to cut costs. Most of his clients say remodeling is one of their biggest investments, so Keith encourages them to use products that will last a long time.
