After analyzing more than 2.6 billion home pins from the past year, the online-pinboard site, Pinterest, confirms that our collective love affair with gray continues: The color saw a 20 percent increase in popularity this year. The bigger surprise, though, was the second most-noted color, mauve, which seems to be making a comeback from the '80s and rose in popularity by 70 percent.

If you're looking for a home refresh, take inspiration from these six images, and your home will look Pinterest-worthy in no time.

How to Choose Between 50+ Shades of Gray

Gray has been a popular replacement for beige walls for some time, but with so many different options available—from yellow-grays to blue-grays—we're all wondering which shade of gray is actually in right now. "Within the home category, we've seen light gray, specifically a shade called 'whisper', trending globally," says Stephanie Kumar, insights lead at Pinterest. For more help on how to decorate with gray, some of the nation's top interior designers share their favorite ways to use the color throughout the home here.

The Key to Your Accent Pieces

To complement your gray-of-choice, Ariel Farmer, a designer for the interior-design service Homepolish, says cool-toned grays work best with shades of blue and metallic accessories, while warm-toned grays go with ivory and warm colors, such as orange (like Nate Berkus used in Iyanla Vanzant's study).

The Way to Use Mauve in This Decade

If mauve gives you flashbacks to the '80s, counteract its old associations with black lacquer and gold by pairing it with rustic, natural woods and fine linens, says Sheila Schmitz, editor of the interior-design website Houzz. The purply tone adds a slight pop of color, but is earthy enough to not look out of place in a woodsy room.

The Bedroom Hue That Will Suit All Parties

Mauve walls make a bedroom feel warm and romantic—without becoming overly feminine. Try a soft shade, such as Benjamin Moore's Majestic Mauve; or, if you prefer a darker tone, try BEHR's Mauve Melody.

The Color Combo You Want to Avoid

Afraid mauve-colored walls will look too purple? Farmer has one piece of advice: Stay away from decorating with yellow. Since yellow and purple are opposite each other on the color wheel, they will look brighter and more intense when used near one another. To keep mauve on the neutral side, complement it with accents in icy blues and browns, suggests Farmer.
