Pregnancy Dos and Don'ts

Can I eat fish?

Yes, but be choosy.

Fatty fish like salmon contain omega-3 fatty acids that may benefit a baby's developing brain and nervous system.

But some fish may contain too much mercury, which is bad for a fetus. Women and young children should avoid eating shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish because those fish contain high levels of mercury.

It's fine to eat up to 12 ounces per week—about two average meals—of fish that are lower in mercury. Since it's higher in mercury than canned light tuna, limit your servings of albacore, or white tuna, to just six ounces per week.
