Menopause: The Questions Keep Coming

Christiane Northup We were inundated with hundreds more menopause questions after Dr. Christiane Northrup's visit to the show! She's back to demystify more wonders of the "Big M."

Can birth control pills be the cause of early menopause?
Birth control pills will not cause an early menopause. Some women just don't do well with the synthetic hormones in birth control pills, and others do. It is also important to note that many women use birth control pills as a way to control perimenopausal symptoms. For some, it is a very effective method, for others, it isn't. If you have any questions, stop them, see how you feel. You also need to be on a good B vitamin supplement on birth control pills. You can use a number of natural supplements and dietary change to do the same thing—it depends on the woman.

Why do I have severe monthly breast pain two weeks prior to my cycle?
With breast pain, that's usually from excessive stimulation of the breast tissue by estrogen without having it balanced by progesterone. You can take B vitamins to help metabolize the excess estrogen in the liver. You can also change your diet, and get enough essential fatty acids. Estrogens like soy help block the estrogen receptors in the breast tissue so they're not so sore. Natural progesterone does the same thing. Balance is the key.

Why doesn't my twin sister have any of the same perimenopausal symptoms?
The beauty of this is that you know this is not just genetic! Here we have twin sisters, the same DNA, one has the symptom, and the other doesn't. It's lifestyle, it's how one is metabolizing her estrogen and the other isn't. It's your environment, diet and stress.

I'm 36 years old, and pre-menopausal. Is it too late to have children?
You can be having what are exactly like perimenopausal symptoms, but it's not menopause, and you can get pregnant in most cases. You need to improve your diet and start doing everything you know to stay healthy. I've seen women like this all the time who can get pregnant with no problem.

Is hair loss a part of menopause?
Hair loss can happen anytime in your life. Women will often notice it after having a baby. When you get to a perimenopausal stage, the stresses that are actually metabolizing are happening more. There are two types of hair loss, the autoimmune kind and male pattern baldness. At midlife, most women get male pattern baldness. They can change it by de-stressing, herbal supplements, and even acupuncture can help. But when you are stressed out, nothing in your life can take root, including your hair.

I'm fifty years old and regular as rain with no perimenopausal symptoms. Should I be worried about that?
No! This person is showing us that perimenopause is a normal stage. If you've been perfectly healthy, and nothing needs to change, you may not notice a thing. One day you'll notice you haven't had a period in three months and you'll just float into the post-menopausal stage no problem.

How do you know, if you don't have a period, that you're not pregnant?
You don't, and sometimes a woman is pregnant. You really have to keep using birth control for a full year after the last menstrual period, but you don't know what that is until it's been a year. So, you have a tricky time in there when you could have a "change of life" baby, so you have to use birth control.
