We can't say this enough: It may be 5 degrees below and overcast, but that doesn't mean you can cut back on sunscreen. Up to 80 percent of damaging UV rays pass through clouds. Four more reasons to slather on SPF 30:

1. If you're like most people, you underapply sunscreen (aim for a teaspoon for your face). "You might be relying on an SPF 15, but if you're using too little, you're only getting the coverage of an SPF 4 or an SPF 8," says New York City dermatologist Elizabeth Hale, MD.

2. For drier skin, a sunscreen can supplement your moisturizer. Look for a product that contains lanolin or glycerin, and avoid those that are alcohol or gel based, says NYC dermatologist Deborah Sarnoff, MD.

3. Being indoors doesn't protect you from sun damage: UVA rays can penetrate glass, says Sarnoff. If your desk is near a window, reapply sunscreen frequently.

4. Treat a day on the slopes like a day at the beach. The atmosphere is thinner at higher altitudes, which means that you're even more exposed to harmful rays. Plus, snow reflects up to 80 percent of the UV light from the sun—so you can be hit by the same rays twice.
