A few herbs can transform any garden party into happy hour. Amy Stewart, author of the new book The Drunken Botanist, suggests her go-to aperitif, the Berry Patch.

Serves 1

Ingredients

  • 1 sprig mojito mint
  • 1 sprig pineapple sage
  • 1/2 lime
  • 4-5 strawberries
  • 1 1/2 ounces white rum
  • 1/2 ounce St-Germain elderflower liqueur
  • Sparkling wine, optional

Directions

Squeeze lime juice into a cocktail shaker and add all the other ingredients. Gently crush the strawberries and herbs with a muddler. Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Top with sparkling wine, if desired.

Grow it: Mint and pineapple sage (whose leaves smell like a tropical delight) are hardy herbs that can sprout anywhere—in your garden or in a pot on your windowsill—as long as they get six hours of sunlight daily. Water regularly to keep soil moist.
