I grew up in a household of women. I was raised with four sisters by my mom and grandmom. There were women everywhere. Even the dogs, horses and the cats were female. We totally outnumbered my father and scared off many a boyfriend with the high levels of estrogen that coursed through our family tree. I learned many important lessons from the women in my life. In fact, all women learn from the women in their lives. Women share a unique quality in that they are eager and valuable givers of advice and able and vital mentors to each other.

There are certain life lessons and passages that only a woman can share completely and with self-knowledge. Truth is, women just know some stuff that men don't. Childbirth is one of those passages and experiences that women are the experts in. Of course there are many, many other things women are expert in, but I am limited to space in this column!

Women rely and need each other to guide, support, teach and advise on this uniquely and only female activity. One of the ways we share our knowledge about childbirth and babies is by throwing a baby shower.

Celebrating the newest member of the human race and the mom-to-be is what the baby shower is all about. Creating a fun, artful and meaningful shower is a snap if you remember one thing—it's all about showering the mom-to-be with love.

A baby shower is a rite of passage and a time to envelop the mom-to-be with the things and knowledge that will serve her well as she becomes a member of the mom's club.

Gather up family and friends and plan a party that promises laughter, joy, advice and the essential must-haves for welcoming the little miracle into the world. And be sure to plan some much-needed pampering for the mom-to-be.
