The drama inside this novel is devastating. One of my favorite scenes is of 15-year-old Berie and her friend Sils taking cigarette breaks at Storyland, where they are working while school's out, with Sils in her Cinderella dress.
A beautiful and frightening novel about summer, heat, money and love. It doesn't look for answers—it lets the questions play. I am not a fan of airport trash and "beach reads." This book makes me think. It makes me want to talk about it with my partner—thinking about it together is as good as sleeping together.
