Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland—starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen—hits theaters March 5 with a new spin on Lewis Carroll's ever-fascinating heroine, who's taken dozens of forms since her first tumble down the rabbit hole...
1859: English schoolgirl Alice Liddell was the inspiration for Alice and a frequent subject of Carroll's photography. Prurient speculation has surrounded the friendship between author and muse ever since.
1865: Political cartoonist John Tenniel provided the vaguely sinister pen-and-ink drawings for the first edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which gave Alice her china-doll face and iconic pinafore.
1951: In Disney's antic, claustrophobic adaptation, the animated Alice is a flaxen-haired sweetheart, easily upstaged by a butch, bellowing Queen of Hearts ("Off with her head!").
1985: The MTV generation got a different taste of Alice in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' video for "Don't Come Around Here No More," featuring a nightmarish unbirthday party—with Alice as dessert.
2003: Annie Leibovitz's lavish Vogue spread cast supermodel Natalia Vodianova as a waifish, glammed-up Alice who plummeted into Wonderland draped in couture by Tom Ford for Yves Saint Laurent.
2010: Mia Wasikowska, star of Tim Burton's new Alice in Wonderland.
