1859: English schoolgirl Alice Liddell was the inspiration for Alice and a frequent subject of Carroll's photography. Prurient speculation has surrounded the friendship between author and muse ever since.
1865: Political cartoonist John Tenniel provided the vaguely sinister pen-and-ink drawings for the first edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which gave Alice her china-doll face and iconic pinafore.
