Adopt a Pet

I met her on the soccer field while watching my girls' games. Every year, 6 to 8 million dogs and cats are put into shelters. On an average, about 3 to 4 million are euthanized. Low adoption rates are one factor that drives more animals to shelters.
Every year there are more and more animals abandoned by their owners. These numbers are sure to increase as a reflection of our economic times. Most euthanasia decisions are based on factors such as temperament and health of the animal as well as the amount of space and resources the shelter has available.
Most shelters waive vaccination fees and other shots. Adoption fees are a lot less than the cost to purchase a pet from a pet store. What is promising is that many pet stores have free adoptions. Our local farmer's market has free pet adoption on Sundays.
I have been told of increasing trends of certain abandoned animals such as bunnies being dropped at shelters, as well as most recently Chihuahuas, which are popular for being "arm candy" as well as for being featured in films. This is very disturbing because we are talking about a life, not an accessory or a holiday gift.
A pet can enhance your life, give you unconditional love and a lifetime of memories. It is proven that pets reduce stress and depression. After a long day, who doesn't want to be loved up, no matter what they did or didn't do?
Look at the big picture: Having a pet takes a lot of responsibility, but if you are up for the challenge, it will enhance your life.
