Was anyone else disappointed with the fact that William Hamleigh didn't really suffer enough in the end? Ok he was hanged, but it just didn't seem like enough when you think of all of the horrific things he did in the book. I'm still haunted by the rape scenes and by the scene where he murders his tenant by crushing him inside his own house. The whole way through the book I kept saying to myself 'this guy better have a serious amount of suffering in the end to make up for all he's done'. I kind of feel like the author chickened out of punishing William properly. I just didn't feel that justice was served.
