I just recently moved from Lincoln,ne to California and am a student at HSU. I was amazed by how this small rural community in Northern California cares about going green. We recycle everything.I have several ideas for going green. buy recycled paper, toilet paper and everything you can, buy the CFL lightbulbs, Pacific Gas And electric gives them away practically where I live, Compost your food stuff this includes everything but meats, cheese, and eggs, though you can compost egg shells of course. Our chicken love this compost pile in the backyard, it is full of bugs for them nd thier eggs taste better. If you have the money, solar power, I grew up with it and works phenomenal and please take public transit or carpool. We have carpools for every big business there.
As an avid environmentalist (my original inspiration was John Denver - who often doesn't get his due for incorporating his love of nature and environmental concerns into activism and song) - I am so excited about today's program. "Earth Day Every Day" and each doing our part - is a vital societal and personal commitment we have to make to ensure quality of life for our children, grandchildren and all of the planet's inhabitants. I am pitching a series of books - what I call "Environmental Primers" - featuring a 7-year-old making easy environmentally conscious choices in her everyday life - in NY next week and am in the process of building a green solar modular home! Can't wait to see the show today. Thanks you, as always, Oprah!
Thanks Oprah for this great show! I missed it the first time and was delighted to see it again. 18 years ago I moved back to Illinois with the intention of starting a business and making sure that being green was part of it - many years and reasons later I never really got to that place that I wanted. In the past year I have made the commitment to be more conscious of how I live and my impact on the earth and on others. I have done little things like use canvas bags when shopping, refuse literature in stores that I can read online, and be careful that what I buy can be recycled.
Today I was energized and motivated to do even more and make even bigger commitments to living a green lifestyle. I went to Shaklee site during a commercial break and ordered some of their products to try. We unplugged the toaster and a few items and are plugged in all of the time. We will order a Smart Strip and buy energy efficient lightbulbs. Oh, we will even commit to using fewer paper napkins when dining out - we don't use them at home.
Even though my original business idea is now part time, I started development of a website to inspire others to help others and honor our earth. I commit to putting the energy to get that off the ground and out there. Maybe one day I can share those ideas on this community.
Namaste and blessings to all.
I watched today's show "Going Green 101" and I'm ready to do my part. Starting today, my family will use cloth napkins. I've cut and pasted all of the green tips provided on the Oprah site. What I now need is the name of the green cleaning service referenced by one of the families featured on the show. Does anyone have any green cleaning team suggestions for the South Chicago area?
One of the big things that they did not talk about is the Yahoo group Freecycle. It is a nationwide posting board that works to save the planet from landfill of things that are usually thrown out. I've donated & received hundreds of things that had I thrown out would clog the landfills. They also did not say anything about your local amnesty day. People throw out tons of junk. Go around & pick up things like computers, furniture, etc. You can then turn around & donate it to your local Salvation Army or if you are a member of a Freecycle group you can give it away on that.
I've had flourecent bulbs through out my house for at least 8 years now. You can get them as daylight bulbs, warm white, cool white, etc. I have found that Ikea is the cheapest for the bulbs, but if you but if you buy them at Home Depot if the bulb should stop working they will exchange it. Their bulbs come with a 5 year warranty. BUT, flourecent bulbs fo have a drop of mercury in them so YOU CAN NOT put them in with your normal recycling. I have found that Ace hardware will accept them for recycling.
I had my son just few months back and untill then I did not know that there are natural cleaning products. In the local Babys R Us I saw the Seventh Genetation brand and have been using it since. The products are priced the same as other brands buit I feel that they work much better. Like the dish washing liquid is safe to be used with my sons bottles yet is tough on grease and food stains. Additionally, just a drop of detergent goes looooooooooong way
I am really happy to have dicovered the Seventh Generation brand and very proud to be part of the people that make a difference in this world, one step at a time
Going GREEN was the best topic I have ever listened to on your show...well, Dr OZ is the closest contender!
We do everything we can to be green. But we are almost the only ones who take advantage of our city's recycling pick-up on our street. How do you get neighbors to participate??? A good way to go GREEN, is to cook healthy meals at home, and forget fast-food and restaurants. It is amazing how even at the grocery store, you will then find yourself choosing non-packaged items, or minimally packaged ingredients. Yes, I would love to use my own bags when shopping...but I wonder if my Wal-Mart Supercenter up the street will have the patience to deal with it... I shall put them to the test next shopping trip! Other than that, we have been using low E lightbulbs for years, have desert landscaping, do laundry in cold water, and often hang items to dry. Planning errands to save gas and time benefits both the environment and our pocket-book as well. I really never thought about going green until I saw the show today. What really amazed me was about the natural cleaning agents. I suffer from asthma myself and didn't realized that my cleaning supplies may contribute to my health problems. I know for a fact that I will be changing the way I clean my home. I will also take some other challenges that was mentioned. My family and I will start making better decision about our environment. Changing the light bulbs seems very simple and not hard to due and also using fewer napkins seems very easy as well. I know I'm not the only one that like to save money on the electric bill. I will definitely unplug things that I'm not using and I have the power strips already I will be turning them off too, but I will like to know if you leave in an apartment is it an easier way to recycle?
Even though I do not live in the United States, I live in Canada, my husband and myself pride ourselves on doing our best to help the environment and teach our three children to respect the planet and the environment. We (my husband and myself) have always taught our kids never to litter and to use recycleable products, recycle everything that is recycleable (no exceptions) and to walk when we can. When our oldest son who is now 9 was small it was very interesting to go for walks with him, because if he seen someone litter he would litterally get angry at whom ever he saw and would tell them that they are killing his planet. But that is exactly what we told him, that when people litter it is killing our planet and since we only get this one we need to do everything to take care of it because with the way we have been treating it, she is now very sick. This seemed to really hit home with our kids. I am proud to say that we only put out on average 1 1/2 bags of garbage a week and we are a family of 5 with an infant child who is 5 months old. Also we fill our two recycling containers every two weeks for pick-up and we recycle all household items and products that are numbered accordingly for our area. I am also working on making a petition to ask our city to put in a better recycling facility that would be able to recycle a greater range of products. We use energy efficient light bulbs and fill our own bottles with water and keep them in the fridge so when we want a drink of cold water we can get one without running the tap. Also my husband last year bought me a Whirlpool front load washer and dryer both of which are energy efficient and the washer uses considerably less water than the traditional top load. We are in the process of fixing up our home and with each improvement we are making sure that it is done properly and in the most energy efficient manner that we can. And I promise that we will continue to do what ever we can to help our planet, we have children and we are only borrowing the planet from them, it is not ours to pollute. If we do not do something now our kids will have nothing left to live for and what will their children do?? If in 100 years we can destroy the planet., just think what we can do over the next one hundred if we all work together!!!! Its for our CHILDREN!!!! They deserve a future that is clean and healthy.
I am currently watching the Oprah show, and I was very interested in the website that Matt Damon had suggested, . However, I live in Canada, and when I went to the site, I noticed that it was only available in the US. WHY??? We Canadians care about the environment, too!! What can I do to get this to Canada?
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you Oprah (and staff) for doing this tremendously important show.
I am in the middle of watching your show and just HAD to come and write you this message (on a commercial of course) to express my gratitude.
I am an educator (at our provincial College) and have been spreading the "green" word for over 10 years now to my students. I each an Ecotourism diploma in which the foundation is green management and environmental awareness. It is so rewarding to One by one we are changing the world!
Personally, I am trying to improve my family's own environmental footprint daily. We recycle everything that our city will recycle, we compost our organic waste, we have changed our lightbulbs to more environmentally responsible light bulbs, etc. Every day I find a new way to be more environmentally reponsible, and your show has inspired me not only professionally, but also personally to do more.
Thank you!
(Merci, Danke, Gracias, etc.)
