Love the show! Can't wait to hear these secrets. Hope it is something other than..."eat less and move more". Like I haven't tried that before
. My husband and I are very overweight and it is inspiring to watch the show each week. But from what I understand, the contestants work out for 2 hours or more a day. How realisitic is that? Sure, while you are away at fat camp and have that time to yourself because of no work and no kids. AND you have a trainer!!! AND a state of the art gym! Who wouldn't want to have Bob or Jillian show them the CORRECT way to do the exercises. For the most of us, we get motivated and start and then injure ourselves or quit when we do not see results.
But here in the real world, I cant find 30 minutes to myself and if I can, it is to shower!
So many questions...should you work out right after your feet hit the floor in the morning? Or should you eat first and then work out? Which is BEST if you have a very small window of time...cardio, pilates, weights, yoga??? And of course, the diet. Most of us think we are eating healthier by buying whole grains and eating more fruits/veggies. But I am lost when it comes to cooking healthier foods that my kids will eat.
I am 5'1" and 190 pounds and am terribly worried about my husbands weight (over 300 pounds) and I sincerely hope something in this show helps to motivate us both. You want a REALity show...bring the biggest loser to my home, help us find time to work out and prepare healthier meals and snacks for our kids while still maintaing full time jobs and running of a house 5!
I think you answered most of your questions in your post. You know the answers, and you know how to lose weight. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just saying there really isn't a secret. I'm actually surprised that the Biggest Loser contestants ONLY work out for 2 hours a day. I would've figured they worked out all day, 8 hours. I mean, what else are they going to do there? Sit and stare at each other?
Just start small. Don't overwhelm yourself. I am going to assume you watch tv every night, which is fine. Just use the commercial time as work out time. Do some crunches, lunges, jumping jacks, anything. It's only 2-3 minutes. On the weekends, work out. Hard core. Just keep pushing yourself. 30 minutes. It's ONLY 30 minutes. Tell yourself that you should be grateful to be healthy enough (you have legs that work) to exercise.
About the food. Seriously go to your pantry, your cabinets and refrigerator and freezer and REALLY assess what you have. Do you have chips? Ice cream? candy? Stop using your kids as an excuse to have the junk in the house. You are poisoning them with that stuff. They shouldn't be eating it either. Their livers and kidneys are too small and too fragile to handle the toxins and sugars and just plain old crap they ingest.
If you want healthy recipes, I'll be happy to share. I'm working on my weight as well and went vegetarian a few weeks ago. I'm not suggesting to anyone to cut meat out completely, but, for me, this fasting from meat has REALLY helped out my body. My digestive track works perfectly now and my skin has a better glow to it. I still cook meat meals for the Mister, so I've got some good recipes up my sleeves.
Good luck in your weight loss endeavors. It really is a life change, not a diet. And there is no secret to losing weight.
I REALLY hope they discuss the "hula" hooping that was done on 1 of the Biggest Loser shows (not sure what season it was on). Its such great exercise & so much fun that is doesn't even feel like you are exercising. It works every muscle in your body, I've worked muscles I never knew I had. I am completely addicted & I HATE to exercise. So thrilled to find something I enjoy doing & have stuck with because I've never stuck with anything. I lost about 15 pounds since July just as a result of hooping. If I could only get the diet under control I would be doing even better. If its not mentioned on this show, I really hope Harpo will consider it for a future show. The benefits go way beyond fitness, I'm talking body, mind & spirit. Its a moving meditation and my cure for depression.
I'm super pumped to catch the show. I've watched a few seasons of "The Biggest Loser" and would love the advice from the trainers. Will be interesting to see the former competitors from the show and what, if any, backslides have occured. I've currently fallen off-te-wagon from my recent weight loss
So I hope that the contestants have done better. It's like Oprah's book with Bob Greene.... "Making the Connection"... once it clicks in your head, I think, phew! you've got it!
I've found that the more weight I lose, the LESS time I find to watch television. I think that it is all relative. It's ironic that "The Biggest Loser" episodes air two hours weekly.... doesn't that mean a majority of the viewers are sitting on their duffs that entire time?!
Can't wait for the show!!
It is what you think, but it's more than that. The doctor from The Biggest Loser, Dr. Rob Huizenga, (who started the BL two-a-days because of his background as the doctor for the L.A. Raiders), says that if you were told you had an illness or disease and you had to have treatment twice a day for an hour each (think dialysis), you would. Well, being overweight is the same. It's shortening your life and causing all sorts of physical (and maybe emotional/mental) stress, as well as stuff like high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, heart failure, depression, stroke and so many more.
He talks about all the things you question (when to work out, what workout to do (with photos), injuries, what to eat and when with recipes, rebounding etc.) It takes you through the program he developed for the show on a week-by-week basis and follows the season that had home contestants with their email questions and problems. So you're right there with them. It's a great book if you want to change your (and your husband's) life for the better. He even shows you what you need for a home gym - no need to join an expensive place. And there are before and after pix to inspire you!
The book is call Where Did All the Fat Go? - The Wow! Prescription to Reach Your Ideal Weight and Stay There. It really covers everything.
Hope you take a look and that it offers some inspiration.
Hi, I'm Joan from Ontario, Canada. Although I understand the severity of the weight / obesity issues in the USA, I find the media coverage, talk shows, t.v. advertising, magazines, books and reality t.v. shows a bit obsessive and over-bearing. I have struggled off and on with anorexia, never requiring hospitalization and never having any medical conditions as a result of the disease. I am actually struggling at the present time to put weight on. It is a very arduous and difficult task and I am presently 'celebrating' that I have put on 5 pounds and am very close to my desired and healthy weight. Every time I turn on the television I see ads about "Jenny Craig" or miracle diet pills or reality t.v. shows, The Biggest Loser, etc. This 'obesity' issue and related coverage has become too much and may even be contributing to people struggling with anorexia or self-image issues. I find that this issue pales in comparison to other extreme issues like poverty, cancer, AID's, child abuse, etc. Please stop the madness with the coverage of this issue!
I would love to share some healthy recipes. Only I would actually just be taking instead of sharing, as I dont believe that I own any.
I am not a very good cook. Unless you count all of the fried things and casseroles that I have been raised on here in the south. Those I can cook. But they aren't good for you.
And somehow I managed to hit the #2 button, but I meant that the contestants work out for 5 hours a day or more. How realistic is that? Maybe at fat camp, but not realistic here in the real world.
5 hours a day is not realistic at all for the average person. But that doesn't mean that putting in only 30 minutes a day is a waste. It is just going to take longer to lose the weight. Ohhhhh, those delicious Southern dishes. Yummmm. You could try the "go three weeks" plan, where you go completely cold turkey on a food item (say, fried foods) and then see if you like it. The belief is that you will no longer have the desire to eat that food. I'm currently doing this with fried foods myself.
Living in the south, the weather is nice, do you have a grill? That's probably the easiest place to start when changing your cooking habits into healthy ones. The key is the marinade. If you can marinate your meats for a few hours (or overnight), it makes all the difference.
Another great tip is to eat a salad with EVERY single meal. Start your meal with a salad, measure out your dressing. 1 tablespoon, even though the suggested serving size is 2 tablespoons (remember that serving suggestion is made for a dinner salad, where that's the ONLY thing you are consuming for your meal, so 1 tablespoon is enough for a small salad). You'll fill up on nutrients, and leafy greens which are FANTASTIC for your digestive track.
Take care!
I think it was a great show, I am very proud of the losers, it takes a lot of will power to stick to a weight lost program.
I only wish I had some help, I work out every other day, and I still feel like I am stuck.
Good luck to all the losers and keep up the good work they looked great
Dear Oprah,
Im a son of an overweight mother! I love my mother to death which is why im writing you. She's a diabetic, and her sugar constantly goes up. She has the to go to the hospital pretty often and I myself sat in the hospital with her when the doctors said she could die if she continues the route she's going. Like I said, I love my mother. I only want the best for her. So I just watch an episode :Weight loss secrets of the "biggest losers" when I said to myself my mom can do what they did if only she'd try/ Oprah I don't know what else I can do for her, Which is why i'm coming to you!!!
Oprah:
If there's a way you can help my mother, then I would forever be greatful. My mom wasn't always this big, and I know she woud love to look the way she used to.
OPRAH HELP ME HELP HER!!!!!
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME!!!!
The Biggest Loser is so inspiring to me and I would love to have Jillian be my trainer(I think) although sometimes I think Bob would be better for my temperment. I have tried to fill out the form but that is as far as the computer will let me get. So instead every time I get on my treadmill I have Jillian in my head screaming that "unless I am dead keep walking" and Bob telling me not to quit.
Someday because of them I hope to be skinny!!!!!
I am a very over weight (280lbs)woman and am worried about my health! I have joined a gym work out for an hour a day doing something I said I would never do leaving my 4 children in the gyms daycare. I feel so guilty about that but the alternitive is even worse I don't want to loose them forever and If I die I will! the problem I'm having is Im not loosing weight! I have went to the biggest looser weight loss web page but to get their tips you have to pay them for it and the gym membership is my one luxiory I allow myself I cant take anything else from my kids. it is eather try to get help or take food from my kids mouths. what are some easy fix meals that I could try that are healthy because just exersizing is not doing it! I so would love a persional trainer but who in the world can afford one my husband is in school so student loans are up the wazoo.is there anyone how could please help me? I dont want to die but I see it comming if I don't loose weight!
saw the last couple of min. of the show. I struggled with my weight for a while also especially right after I got married. Fast food for dinner, or high calorie meals. I had reached my highest weight. after stepping on a scale at the doctors I knew I had to do something about what I was doing and the way I was eatting.
starting last May I joined a weight loss program. and now 6 months later I have lost over 30 lbs and feel great. Im eatting healthier and learning how to cook better foods. great for thoughs on your show that also took the weight loss challange and lost the weight. it can be tough but in the end its very rewarding for your self along with being healthier.:^0
This was a great show, I wish my mom could do what these people have done she goes up and down with her weight I wish it was something she could do like what these people have done, good luck to those people this was a great show
