Sounds fun, but does a "new kind of Oprah show" mean they are hosting and Oprah won't be there (I can't imagine the Oprah Show without Oprah, but the desciption of the show sort of reads that way)? Is this going to be a regular feature like Dr. Oz?
Maybe,Gayle could also give us a first-hand account of the Celine Dion - Charice duet at Madison Square garden. I thought Oprah mentioned that Gayle was there at the concert. The Celine-Charice fans would definitely love that.
This is an excellent move to change the format a bit. I've always been an Oprah show fan, but recently (in the past year of so) I've been drawn to The View. Reason? The candid, free flowing, down-to-earth, grassroots conversations about current events....events that happened yesterday, last night, or 30 minutes ago.
Oprah's new format, at first glance, seem to offer some of the same things. As a viewer I offer some observations:
- I like having a man in the group; establish a regular talent....someone who is comfortable with chatty women and can actively participate without trying to take over.....someone who has great common-sense and asks thought-provoking questions.
- The presentation of the show (stage) is a bit overwhelming for me. So busy.....a lot going on visually. It distracts me from the conversation at hand.
- As the Oprah show experiments with the right mix of talent, keep in mind great conversation happens when there is great contrast among ideas... philosophies...
I'm intrigued and I appreciate the Oprah show taking a new approach for its viewers.

P.S. I know, I know...you get this question all the time....can I get a ticket to the Oprah show? When I've tried in the past, via phone, I was not successful.
This was so great! I loved it! I agree that it was very much like a View "Hot Topics", but better because it was Oprah and they didn't bicker the whole time! So I wonder what the plan is going forward. Will it be the same panel - I thought the group today was a great mix! Will they do this every Friday or only certain Fridays? I still love the regular shows, but I love this fresh new spin!
I just heard the story about the girl who is selling her virginity and while I completely agree that it is her choice to do whatever she chooses with her own body, it was the statement she made about what she planned to do with her million plus dollars that she would end up getting that bothered me. I would think in all her research about the dichotomy of virginity vs. prostitution, she would have uncovered information about the many third world countries where sexual slavery is prevalent and girls are married off at an extremely young age because the men that are buying them want a virgin. She mentioned funding her research and graduate studies and the ability to have financial freedom but she never said anything about donating her "earnings" to organizations to help girls in these countries get out of their sexual slavery or prostitution. While she should be able to do anything she wants with her body, maybe she should think about how doing this can benefit other people instead of just herself.
In response to the ex CEO of Washington Mutual getting a 11.5 million dollar severence for 3 weeks of work. I think he should be required to donate that 11.5 million to Katrina victims in New Orleans. That would get a lot of people out of their FEMA trailers. If that man walks away with that much money when so many are suffering in this country and working harder than he has, he should be ashamed.
This is a major issue in my relationship. I most certainly do most of the work related to the home including grocery shopping, cleaning cooking etc. I am extremely frustrated when I come home from a day at work and I have to cook, tidy up and then clean-up after supper only to have my husband sit on the couch for the duration. I have tried to explain to him that he should have responsibility for the home as well. His argument is that he has many other responsibilities like taking care of the house and vehicles. To his credit, he is very capable person in this regard. He can fix nearly any household problem that arises and he also has great ability when it comes to fixing vehicles. I am grateful for this work, but I cannot help but be frustrated, extremely frustrated, by the fact from Monday to Thursday he spend the majority of this time on the couch while I am working around him. I can't figure out if I am being unnecessarily demanding or if he actually has an obligation to help out (in addition to what he does with the house).
To be perfectly honest I really support this woman's decision and I was a little surprised by Gail's response to her. Gail was clearly judging her for it and it was suprising because there are so many more women (and young girls) making worse decisions about their first time. There is also nothing to say that this would not be a good expereince for this women. As she said, she is not going to just accept the highest bidder, she very likely make her choice based on looks and physical appeal.
People seem to attach so much moral weight on decisions about sexuality, but this woman seems more level headed than most about their first time. Is it really such a poor choice?
Aren't we all in this financial situation due to the americans. A few years ago americans started taking out loans they couldnt afford now the americans who knew there limits are going to pay for it. The goverment should not bail these companies out or the people who got this way. The only people who will suffer is the people who paid thier mortgages and the small business people.
The schools need to teach basic economics and civic classes starting at the 7th and 8th grade levels. I remember my civics class and learned so much from it. It is not taught anymore. If I had not taught my older children about money, they would have never received any training in school. Now I homeschool my youngest one and he is really into this election year.
Hi I have to agree with Truskdp, I think that the 11.5 million dollars should be split in a few ways, the hurricane victims in New Orleans, but in Galveston also, and to other charities, like Shriner's Children's Hospital throughout the country. I think that anyone that has worked for a company for 3 weeks, should be paid like a normal employee would. Three weeks of work, you get your 1st and last check, and then go look for another job. With all of Americans i hardship, maybe that 11.5 million could even be given to some of the families that had to foreclose their homes, and are living on the streets or in shelters. My opinion only.
It was just brought up that we should teach a course on financial management in school.
There are courses taught in financial management by Family and Consumer Science teachers. However most schools are cutting back or cutting out all family and consumer science courses. They are no longer considered essential and yet most of the major problems we face today are addressed in these courses. Training in finances, foods and nutrition, child care and parenting are all covered in Family and Consumer Science courses. It is interesting that when these things were being taught in most every home they were also required at school. Now that parents spend less and less time with their children, extended families do not live in close proximity to each other, and many parents do not have these skills to pass on to their children, we teach them less and less in school. There are a number of save the arts in our schools programs but no one is trying to save the family and consumer science courses that are basic for our survival.
