Atheism and spirituality

Posted on Aug 20, 2008 2:10 AM

I haven¿t read the book yet, so forgive me if I ask an unnecessary question or say things that are not applicable to this specific book.. What actually keeps me by now away from all these books are two things:
First comes the notion of God and or other spiritual beings. I am an atheist and feel somehow offended when my entire life¿s purpose is related to God (this is the spiritual name I will stick with for now). In my view lies spirituality in our human ability to be in relationship with each other in a supportive and non-hurtful way. These are spiritual moments, to see someone truly in all of his/her glory, pain, joy, anxiousness, etc. The mere ability to connect with other human beings without false pretense, judgment, or separation gives me the feeling of a ¿spiritual awakening¿. Often the feeling of being listened to and understood or the ability to truly listen to someone in conversation can lead to this elated state of mind. Talk about God, Ego mind, Ego state, consciousness, etc. clouds in my view something very simple and this is humanness. In order to achieve this connection we can use far more down to earth tools instead of religious wisdoms, rules, or meditation practices. All this can sometimes lead away from the real life application of being able to relate to another human being.
This use of specified vocabulary falls into the second category of things that I find difficult about books that are written to awaken myself to the purpose of life. Such words (Ego, Inner Child, Ego mind, Oneness, Jesus, God, Buddha, Allah, beingness) create sometimes an entirely new vocabulary that is suddenly used by all insiders and alienates entire groups of people. It also seems to create some form of follower-ship that is separated from the world. I just think of some groups I have attended and we eventually spoke in terms that sounded similar to sect like talk.

So, my question is now, is this a book that is different to all the others or does it basically have the same message with new vocabulary?

What are your thoughts on the connection of spirituality and atheism?

Spirituality and atheism are two different words for the same thing.

Disengage them both.

Mornin' pipi,

Spirit lies within all evolved sentient organizations and on some level connects us all, IMV :0 :p

You might enjoy the book OBJECTIVISM: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand...written by Leonard Peikoff, a lot better than Tolle's writings, if you're worried about being exposed to human spirituality.

Regards, bill :)

In my opinion, your views say exactly the same thing only using the words human and humanness, instead.

In my walk, I have discovered they are all right. What ever is truth to you, is what matters most.

A New Earth doesn't take away from one's view or truths. It only enhances them. I think it is easy to shut ourselves off from a message of truth when the words used bring a wall or contempt, because of one's prejudice or disbelief in the words the speaker or writer uses.

If someone does not believe in Jesus or Buddah or Allah or even ego, then their attention goes to that label, instead of the message being offered. Just my opinion, of course.

Much love,

Susannah

What is spirituality?

What is atheism?

Really?

What does it mean?

Who or what is god?

The bright centre of everybody's world... life...

What makes your world turn?

What is its foundation?

Where lies your trust? What is true to you?

The answer to these questions can never been given through words.

Or beliefs. Or theories.

So again: God... Ego... Spirituality... Atheism...

What do they mean?

To you? To me?

How real are they?

Is there a final answer?

When we are inside, someone can tell us how wonderful the sun is,

but only when we go outside and see for ourselves the words come to life!

Let's have a look! :)

Love to you all.

It seems we all use different vocabulary to describe our realities or our spirituality. :) I don't demand that others see their life as I see mine, or that they call certain things what I call them. We are all Unique Individuals. The source of all existence, what ever or who ever made me I happen to call God or Energy, however, not everyone does the same and I have no problem with it.

People become thrown off and sometimes lost due to the names we give our experiences, no doubt there. I choose to drop all names and titles, labels as well and go back to my Original Self, I knew I was here somewhere. :) What ever Love you have for Life, or for your existence, how you feel about your relationship with it and those around you, I would call spiritual. :)

I read this book more than once, yes you may find that it uses similar vocabulary at times but if I wasn't able to get past that myself I would have lost out because this book edified what I've already experienced and learned over the years, and made it that much stronger. So it was well worth reading it. I didn't find it religious or condemning at all, on the contrary, very encouraging and helpful.

greetings,...pipi36....

Welcome aboard ,sorry my comment to Bazz, my brother from an other mother.'not'.,could not resist.

You see ,the community forms, with likes and dislikes of all and many..

and the one thing we all have in common is.

we are all ,,,right at this very moment doing the one same thing that is ......

B*R*E*A*T*H*I*N*G*.......

That is our commonality... and we go from there.Call it what ever you want..

it isnot brought in to us by us.. nor taken out of us by us .

When you are sleeping, eating, thinking dreaming,

in deep sleep. Breath is being sustained and sustaining ..deep within us all....... :x ..

Keeping our body warm.. our automatic system working optimally.

our minds clear and active ,our hearts beating and our feelings and emotions

like waves in the ocean of life and love ,......comming and going....

we are thus LIVING Human Beings..

and celebrating LIFE as humans is what we should all participate in more often...

Which ever label we choose to tack on it ,...it is still an awe inspiring phenomenon..

so welcome here and enjoy...... .........

light love and peace

Audrey..
