I do surprise gardener to some of my "flower challenged" friends. They LOVE it!
I just moved back to the 'burbs from Hawaii (3 years there, yeah, I KNOW!, ...job ended there, Chicago house wouldn't get sold, benefit: had a place to come back to...God has a plan..I was hoping it didn't include sub-zero temperatures) so, I'm used to flowers all year long. I couldn't wait to make the lanai/patio my outdoor living space. I had to leave a 5' tall orchid (hand to my heart truth!), a plumeria tree, I was growing a pineapple plant and it actually had a small pineapple. My advice to people...take the trip...that's what a credit card is for! you will remember it for the rest of your life!
Oprah looked great in that mint green sweater. Please, if someone from her staff reads this, pass that along.
This was a great show! I truly could use Jamie's expertise to help organize my outdated, poorly organized yard.
I always wanted to have my home to be an extension to my yard, with wrapped around access to the yard, from every corner of my home. Then I would have a neighborhood party every weekend, rain or shine!
Show aired 6/11/08, Wednesday
This was a rare day for me to sit in my home and watch Oprah. I am usually working in a Garden Center. Today, I was actually interested in hearing about gardening in small spaces like balconies - extending your living space to the outdoors and meeting your neighbors. Topic was good from my perspective - being an independent Garden Center owner.
Your guest from Australia is very charming and I am sure imparts quite a bit of knowledge with his passion for gardening.
MY PROBLEM with the show was ‘one stop shopping at Loews'. I am an independent garden center owner, one of many in the country that probably took offense to the blatant support of a Big Box that if you really knew who you were promoting - does not take care of their plants NOR provide plant knowledge or assistance to their customers. They support offshore production more than domestic production; they carry a slew of chemicals, adding to our ever widening environmental issues.
I would think, the concept of supporting our small business owners, would be more important to Oprah's many missions, maybe not as lucrative. I am sure Lowe's paid handsomely for this exposure.
Supporting our Local Business's is critical to our economy here in New Hampshire as I am sure it is to other states. As Oprah, we put our heart and soul into our businesses. My garden centers goal is to introduce our customers back to the basics of gardening, without the use of synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers which are being introduced back into our environment. My company may not be large, but it was created to support our local people, our community and the environment.
Oprah and your team, I would appreciate a little focus on small businesses and how they are the backbone of our country. You have a huge organization that may too insulated from small businesses. I am but one, of many that could use your support to ‘buy locally'. The Big Boxes are NOT local.
I would love to be able to support my community and buy local but the box stores are cheaper. The cost of everything is skyrocketing so unfortunatley if I can buy pansies at Walmart for way less then I'm going to.
For the last couple of years we get together weekly during the summer with our neighbors. We call it Happy Hour. Usually on a frinday evening in someones front or back yards, taking turns. Everyone brings an appetizer and what ever they want to drink and we all get to socialize and catch up. It has been great for getting to know each other. Also. for the last two years we have had a block party at the end of summer. We all look out for each other and my street in Long Beach, CA. has been an Amazing place to live. Thank you Oprah for all that you give everyday!!! Bless you!!!
Hi Oprah great show I live in canada and love flowers but a balcony is not quite what I have do you think you and Jamie could do a show on large spaces. I live in a wide open yard about 1 acre in size and a white long house about 70 feet long with a concrete deck that is 12feet X 70 feet long and it overlooks 1 acre of grass with neighbours on each side. Any ideas????????
