Consider going into small town America to find the best sandwiches also.

You may want to consider Big Mama's house...

I think the show will be great! It's been a while since I've seen something like this. I can't wait to see which sandwich, which I am not one, wins!

Reply 8. Does Anyone Else Find This Meat-Laden Sandwich Showdown Depressing? May 9, 2008 7:58 AM

Does anyone else find this meat-laden "Sandwich Showdown" depressing? Just google "factory farming" and see how the animals she's dining on lived and died. I love Oprah, but admit I'm mystified by her attitude towards animals. While she demonstrates an enormous capacity for empathy and caring for people, she doesn't seem to be able to extend her circle of compassion to include animals (other than dogs). I pray that one of these days she'll have a profound "lightbulb moment" as she says...and she will see that it is all connected - what we do to these animals, we do to ourselves.

Vegan and vegetarian cuisine has become so creative and delicious...there's really no reason to continue to support cruelty towards animals for the sake of flavor. Hopefully someday she'll have an Animal-free Sandwich Showdown and expose America to the incredible flavors, health, environmental benefits and ease of a cruelty-free diet.

"Animals of this earth exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than blacks were made for whites, or women created for men." - Alice Walker, Author of Oprah's favorite book...the Color Purple

Reply 9. Re: Oprah's Sandwich Showdown! Was there a healthy one in the bunch? May 9, 2008 8:35 AM

And we wonder why Americans are overweight!

Was there one healthy sandwich in the bunch?? What does dr. Oz or any of the health gurus have to say about these sandwiches? They all look like they pack a lot of calories and fat. Most use those huge buns which are probably made with white flour (i.e. not whole grain) with lots of "bad carbs" and they are so hard to handle or stuff into your mouth. The contents of most of sandwiches is spilling out. How do you eat these without creating a mess and dripping sauce or cheese or something on your hands, your face or your clothes?

Why do all these sandwiches use so much bread? They are difficult to eat with either the hands or with a knife and fork without turning off the people across and next to you.

What is the alternative? When you go to many countries in Europe you don't see double layers of bread or buns that often. You see open face sandwiches where you can actually taste what is on the bread. It doesn't get lost between the taste of a double layer huge bun. Sandwiches in many European countries are made so you can pick them up with one hand, or if they are bigger they are not so high that you can't eat them with a knife and fork. The portions are smalller. Why have huge portions? Who needs all those calories? Unless you are a working on a farm or doing hard physical labour all day. Most American lead pretty sedate lives. Why promote those Esquire magazine sandwiches when healthier options need to be promoted? There are delicious healthy choices available. Do a show on those!

Please forgive me Oprah, Gayle and all of Gayle's fans. But now I know Gayle is brainless She does not like lobster. Who does not like lobster? As I have said b4, she is lucky she is Oprah's best friend. Who is she to give reviews? No one would know of her if she wasn't Oprah's friend. And why can't she get a man? Cause she is brainless! (i am sorry everyone!) She proved that on the road trip shows with Oprah. I must say for the first time her hair was cute in her 2nd piece with a Keith Allen. She insulted (JMHO) the chef with the lobster sandwich and he gave a look like, who are you to rate me? Lobster with melted havarti....yum. Need to try that. The sandwich should have gotten more points on looks alone! Thanks for reading!

Not depressing at all. I must sy I do order the "Vegetarian" sandwich at most places I go only because I fear eating chicken or meat out at restaurants due to not wanting to get sick. But I love sandwich meats and it is good to have new ideas. Hopefully they will show more veggie sandwiches too. They had lobster with cheese...nothing depressing about that! Have an open mind for meat eaters out there!

YUCK YUCK YUCKIE!! Before going to commercial there was a chef who was tasting something on a spoon and after taking it from his mouth returned the spoon to the container. Now Oprah you know we black folks are taught to drop what we want to taste in our hand to taste it. We better NOT put a spoon in our mouth and back into the pot. Hell NO!

"Lobster with cheese....nothing depressing about that."

Really?

Let's look at cheese. In order to give milk, cows, (Iike women) must give birth. Male calves are of no use to the dairy industry and are typically sold for veal within a few days of their birth. I've seen footage of these terrified newborns being dragged across auction blocks - some with their umbilical cords still attached. They spend their lives tied to tiny crates intentionally designed to restrict their movement so their muscles won't develop and their flesh will remain soft and light - as prefered by "gourmets." The mothers are known to mourn heavily for their lost calves, but are put immediately back into production and the cycle continues until they are too old and used up, at which point they are killed and ground into cheap hamburger meat.

And as for lobsters - well, they are routinely boiled alive and suffer terribly. There's an outstanding essay by David Foster Wallace that was featured on NPR. It's called "Consider The Lobster." Although he is NOT a vegetarian, he writes about the scientific evidence of the lobster's ability to feel pain in most eloquent terms.

So yes, call me crazy, but I find causing animals pain - especially for the sake of something as frivioulous as flavor - really depressing. Hope you keep ordering those veggie sandwiches...!

:-)
