I'd like to know what ever happened to the homeless girl that used to study in the park and Oprah gave her an apartment and paid for her school. I don't remeber her name, but if you have an idea of whom I'm talking about, can we bring her back on the show to follow up with what she's doen with her life lately? I'm very curious. TX!

So far into the show, Sharyn and Marvin are just as fantastic as they appeared to be. Sometimes folk just need a help and once they get that help they will never go back to their self made hells. Oprah staff this was a good one.

Oprah;

I hope when you decide the time is right for you to adopt a dog to bring into your family that you adopt from a kill shelter..Going to a no-kill shelter and adopting is a wonderful thing..But you will really save a life at a high kill shelter..Any dog's coming from a place like that will be really saving a life..

I live in Bridgeport Connecticut and my local shelter kills dogs and cats..So far this fiscal year they have taken in over 1,300 animals..I cringe when I think how many of those poor souls have been killed..I have two rescues from that shelter and one from another local town's shelter and yet another one from a local rescue..

My daughter just recently rescued a dog from a high kill shelter in Texas..She was heartworm positive and would have surely been killed..She is now 100% healthy and we love her to pieces..

Those are the dogs that need to be rescued..Please consider a dog from a high kill shelter..You will really be saving a life..

And thank you for today's show with a segment on Angel's Gate..A wonderful inspiring show surely to make people see up close and personal the suffering animals who would have died if it wasn't for Ms. Marino and her caring soul..

We have here in Stratford CT a rescuer that does handicap rescue also but on a smaller scale..The rescue name is SARAH, INC.Also a wonderful woman dedicated to helping the sick and injured dogs in our area and beyond..

Thank you, Jan Bassett

I would like to encourage everyone to make a fully informed decision about adopting from a shelter. Oprah never mentioned any reasons why she is promoting and donationg to no kill shelters but I do hope she researched exactly what that means. For me there is no right or wrong shelter to adopt from, but there is a problem if you are emotionally driven by the term "no kill" without any facts about that actually means.

A "no kill" shelter is actually a "closed admission" shelter that has rules and about what types of animals it will accept. In a large percentage of cases the rules are written so that they do not accept any animals that may have the potential to be put down. Nothing at all wrong with that and they do save many animals but it does mean someone or some shelter has to deal with the animals that are not lucky enough to be accepted into a "no kill" shelter.

The vast majority wind up it city shelters, such as the one in Ft Worth Texas that was shown on the puppy mill show. So there is room for all who want to help animals and a wide variety of ways. Oprah's decision to adopt from a shelter is wonderful, it is great that she specifically wants a no kill shelter, but it would be even better if she would educate everyone on just what that really means and maybe highlight the fate of those turned away from no kill shelters. That way people can decide where their heart lies and which kind of shelter they want to support. Both types are deserving, I have personally adopted from both types but my personal preference is city shelters that lack more resources and options than a lot of "no kill " organizations have.

Also, those who do not wish to adopt should consider donationg money or time. All types of shelters are always in need of vounteers!

I was saddened, sickened, disgusted, and horrified when I saw the segment of your show showing the animal shelter taking care of physically handicapped pets. It is a sick world that looks at something like that and considers that "humane treatment"of animals. Those poor creatures should all have been humanely euthanized as soon as they were found. Shame on you for trying to make her look like some kind of hero. Animals have been "humanized" by society and this is wrong. We are a family who loves our pets(12 horses, 2 dogs, cats) but when an animal is injured so severely that they can no longer function we put them to sleep to take them out of their suffering. As humans it is our God given obligation to care for all animals in our charge but animals deserve to be freed from suffering when unnecessary suffering occurs. I hope there are millions of other viewers who also realized how awful it is to force these animals to continue to suffer.

I just finished watching the part of the show about Angel's Gate Animal Sanctuary. It made want to cry. I've always for some reason wanted to adopt an animal with a disability.

I was so happy to hear a follow up from the puppy mill show. I volunteer with my local shelter and know that this show has helped and will help educate the public to the reality of the puppy mill problems as well as the challenges of shelters all across our country. I was a little disturbed when Oprah said she would adopt from a "No Kill" shelter for her next pet. It seemed a put down on the shelters that are not "No Kill". As there are many shelters that are not "No Kill" but work very hard to help homeless animals and have a goal of "No Kill" This seemed to be a put down on those of us working so hard for the animals but aren't No Kill.

The goth mom make-over is the funniest thing I've seen on the Oprah show. The first time it was on I laughed so hard I cried. The same thing happened when I saw it again. Her reaction (or lack of a reaction) is priceless! Thanks for another great laugh!

Jan,

I had the very same reaction and posted a message before reading your message. I also work with a shelter (Which people would call a Kill Shelter) and am very proud of the work we do faced with the challenge of being the only shelter in the area and taking in more than 5000 animals a year.

I have been watching this episode in awe. I loved seeing the follow up on the woman that had the hoarding problems. I was touched by the animal update. I did not see the original episode. We adopted a cat from our local humane society. TK had a partial tail apputation. He was an indoor/outdoor cat with his previous owners. One day he came home with a bloody tail. His owners could not afford the care, so they brought him to the humane society. An area vet donated his services to take care of TK's squashed tail. Due to this, TK can no longer be an outside cat. He is a very loving cat and loves being in any room where there are people. We originally were planning on adopting a kitten, but fell in love with TK when we saw him, and have not regretted our decision once, except maybe on the weekends when he tries to wake us up at 5:30 am to get fed. I believe that anyone who is looking for a pet, should look at their local shelters/humane societies first, and not their local pet store.

To Bryan's comment, I understand that an animal suffering from severe pain and has no chance of a happy recovery should no doubt be euthanized to save them from the pain, but the animals shown in the segment today were clearly not in pain whatsoever. To claim that all animals with physical dissablities should be euthanized is like saying people with dissablities should not be given a chance at a happy life. The animals that were shown from Angels Gate were not at all at fault for the diformities they live with, so how should we be the ones to rip them of their love and companionship to the workers and other animals around them? In my opinion, if an animal is happy, loved, and out of pain, no matter their diformity, we are not in the right to steal that from there. Angels Gate is a beautiful and blessed place, and I truely teared up to see there are other remarkable people out there who see through that animals deserve a sincere end to their lives just as we.

Puppy Mills - When I first saw this show, I wept. When I saw the follow up with so many dogs and puppies being adopted, I wept. Oprah, please consider

doing a show about cats and kittens. I am a fostermom for Save a Pet in NY State. It's beyond belief the numbers of cats and kittens who suffer

horribly. Adoption to responsible homes is key, AND Spay and Neuter. There are so many people who absolutely believe cats can 'fend' for themselves and that putting them in a barn is all that's needed. I think I mumble 'spay and neuter' in my sleep! I see good, caring people, and alas, I see people who don't care and are neglectful and abusive.

Please, please consider doing a program on cats and kittens.

Thank you so much

Love,

Beverly Speller

Dear Jan and Oprah,

Oprah thank you for bring the important facts out about puppy mills, shelter and spay neuter. I work for a shelter and was amazed by how well the show was done. thank you also for deciding to adopt your next canine family member. Separating shelters by kill and no kill however does more harm than good. No one shelter is no kill. If one shelter is not euthanizing for space meaning they close their doors when they are full, another shelter must to make room for the animal turned away from the non kill shelter aka limited admisson shelter. Shelters that do not euthanize for space close their doors to animals needing a shelter. With out open door shelters, meaning if all shelters are not euthanizing for space then, their doors will be closed and animals will either be left in backyards neglected to die, abandoned on the streets, brought directly to the vet to be euthanized without a chance for adoption or abused by the person that does not want them. Adopt from animal shelters, every adoption will make room for another life to be saved.

Dana

I watched today's show and I must remind everyone that the "man" that is pregnant is not a MAN. A man cannot have a baby. A man CANNOT have a baby vaginally. This is a woman, born a woman and has chosen to live her life as a man. I'm sure there are thousands if not millions of women who thought a man could have a child would gladly give up that job.
