Emergency House Call: Dr. Oz and a Family in Crisis
Apr 15, 2008 9:32 AM
Dr. Oz couldn't get this family out of his head…so he traveled nearly 3,000 miles to their front door for an emergency house call. Have they reached their breaking point?
See what happened on the show!

Dr. Oz,
I wander if you could help me with something. First of all I've watched many Oprah shows when I can. I've seen and heard of all the greatest things that she has done with everyone she's helped. Anyways, I am 5 months pregnant. My grandmother just passed away on March 22, 2008 and I have lost her and the home I've lived in because I was living with her. I was helping with her (my grandmother had cancer), my two oldest children, and my mother. And I was working on top of all this. My mother kicked me out of the house,so now I am temporarily living with a friend. I just quit a trucking job due to sexual harassment and them shorting me on the miles I drove for them. I had lost my car I had due to a car crash in St. Louis, MO, so I have no transportation except for my feet to get back and forth to my Doctor appointments, grocery store, etc. I have found another trucking company that has hired me and I start this Wednesday for their orientation. But I will be gone for three weeks at a time. I am Due August 31, 2008 and my baby if it is a girl, I am naming her after my grandmother. My Fiance' and I have helped many, many people but it just seems that when we are the ones needing help, there is no one that wants to help us. We have helped others pay some bills so they can have things turned back on, we have put food in their house for them and their kids, and we have taken others in when they had no place to live just so they can get back on their feet and do what they have to do to get their lives back in order. I pray everyday that things will change for the better. I have until the first of August to save money from this job now, but that's going to be hard. Especially when what I save is what we will have to live off of until I can start work again. I feel like I've hit rock bottom, and I know the only way is up now, but it seems I keep going down. I don't want my baby growing up and moving around all the time to find somewhere warm or a roof over their heads. I want to be able to provide a stable place and great environment for him/ or her.
Sorry this is so long, but I needed to talk to some one. Thank you. If you can't help or no one else can, thank you anyways.
Sincerely,
Kristy McDaniel

OMG, I didn't get a chance to watch this show, but it hit me hard. The statement about childhood and learning the flight-or-fight method was, as Oprah would say my "AH HA" moment. Every fight I get in to about anything, I leave. It made me remember back as a child how my parents would argue and I would leave the house and walk around the block until they stopped. I never could figure out in all my relationships why I could say that I had never been broken up with before....it's because I LEFT EVERYTIME things got rough. I'm a leaver!!!! Still today, i threaten to leave in every fight. Luckily, my fiance makes me stay and talk it out, but it's totally against my better (or worse) judgement to stay. I also became a smoker 2 years ago and I'm 41 years old. NEVER smoke around my children or anyone. I'm ashamed of it, but it's my release. After reading this, I'm going to print it out for my fiance because this is our story, and we are so in love, but things in my past still haunt me and that's going to ruin every relatioship if I don't start figuring it out. Thank you for this story!!!!

As a recovering alcoholic (3years) and a survivor of childhood domestic violence, alcoholism and general trauma., I was touched by todays story. I also have been a Family Therapist. I thought all the professionals offered perfect advice. I have one thing that I think the gentleman needs to add to the list , and that is AA. You don't need to build a social group necessarily.....One is waiting for you in the rooms of AA .. I too resisited it for a long time, but it is the family I wished I had had. It is not just about not drinking, it is about learning to live life and find SERENITY. I would like to share a piece I wrote that came from the pure gratitude I have for being humble enough FINALLY to be given the fgift of AA.
Sanctuary
The words in these rooms
flow honey sweet over me
hope drifts in the air
the love here has set me free. (Tanka poetry)
Please be kind to yourself and find AA in your community., you will find Serenity and it will spill into all areas of your life. Without it , we continue to suffer from untreated alcoholism.....our problem is not drinking, it's our thinking. Pam

This show, and the show that spawned today's topic, has really changed my whole outlook on smokers. When I encounter cigarette smoke, my throat closes, becoming sharp and painful to breathe and swallow. I don't know if I am actually allergic to it, but it is great source of discomfort to me. I used to be so angry with anyone who smoked, including relatives. I had no patience with them, no sympathy. After all, my husband was able to quit a habbit of two packs a day, cold turkey. When I was a little girl, my mom quit, with a bit of struggling, but none the less, she did quit. So, I just thought it was a matter of personal desire, or pride. Thank you for enlightening me to the addiction factor. I had no idea that quitting was harder than a heroine addiction. WOW. I have since felt completely different toward all smokers. I wouldn't call it pity, more like a deeper understanding of the struggles people face every day and the ways we choose to deal with them. You, Dr. Oz and Oprah, are teaching me so much. I love you guys. Keep doing what you're doing, for the sake of us in need of enlightenment.

I quit smoking last June and I wish this show had been on back then! I was very inspired by this couple and wish them great sucess. I feel confident they can make it!!
However, I did not agree with the reasons that Tony was having a hard time quitting. It was probably harder for him to quit because the tobacco companies are adding more
chemicals especially NICOTINE creating a stronger addiction. This is making is MUCH harder for all people to quit. There is a great deal of information available on this and
I don't think it should be so easily overlooked. I am not saying that I don't agree at all with the reasons pointed out because I do agree with each of them. I just don't believe
it is the only reason Tony is having trouble.
One other issue I thought of was the headaches. My chiropractor helped me get rid of those. I don't get headaches anymore!
Quitting smoking is great and there are more reasons to quit than to not but each person has to get through their own battle. God Bless all who can make it!

Tony and Wendy,
About thirteen years ago, I was in your same situation. My ex and I did not want to tell our son not to smoke and be smokers ourselves; so, my ex-husband and I quit smoking.
I had a harder time quitting than my husband; and, he smoked twice as much as I did. I sucked on tootsie roll pops for months! Trust me when I say it will get easier as the days pass.
Much Luck,
Sharon T.

I'm 55yrs old and smoked for 35yrs. I stopped, cold turkey, on my own as of Jan 3, 2008. So far, I've cheated twice, but that's OK!!!!!!!!!! I keep saying to myself, I'm sick and tired of these stupid cigarettes ruling my life. I've cried buckets full of tears. Because cigarettes have so many bad drugs in them, I can't help feeling sad, mad, depressed, I feel like I've lost my best friend. They've always been there with me through all my ups and downs in life. My family knows to leave me alone while I'm quitting smoking because they've been through it with me before. After 2mths I still wanted a cigarette, only when I really focused on that fact. When I have those over-whelming feelings , I just take a few deap breaths then force myself to focus on something else. It's been about 3mths now and the feelings are very sparce. Good luck and God bless all of you out there who are wanting to quit. GrMa Linda

What a great show. You could see they are real people with real lives or at least more like ours. We are so glad you are helping them. Tony reminds me of my husband, Tony is really struggling with issue and he seems so honest and caring. It is true we like him better than he likes himself. Please let him know we wish the best for him and his family.
He found support and help at AA and maybe he should go back to get in touch with his feeling and strength again it might help or another marriage or family group, there are plenty of them out there.
They both seem like they really care about each other and want to succeed and we want them to succeed too.

On April 11 2008 I lost my father due to lung cancer. He was a heavy smoker for many years and he quit 16 years ago but somehow he got lung cancer anyway. I wonder how long would he live if he was still a smoker.Probably much shorter than 61. I feel very sad specially because I could't attend his funeral, I live here in US and he lives over sees.I was also a smoker, but quit 3 years ago. That was the best thing I ever did and also one of the hardest thing I ever did.It took many times to quit but I finally did it. My husband was my bigest support . Now after 3 years of not smoking I cant imagine myself with cigarette. I totally turned my life around, my lifestyle is (almost) completely healthy ( dont do treadmill every day).If I did it anyone can do it, it just takes time and patience.I hope my story can inspire someone to quit . My father inspired me to quit and I did it!

Dr. Oz advised the wife that if her husband did not quit, she would not either. That may not be 100% correct. I smoked for 30 years, quit 20 years ago with NO problems - never wanting another cigarette. My employer at the time paid for half of the Smoke Ender program, (Columbia, Md.) I paid the other half of $250. If I stayed stopped three months, I got my money back. It was a six week program. We met once a week, had a facilitator. Having also attended Al-Anon for a gazillion years I knew that if I followed the "rules" exactly, it would succeed. I did, it did. My co-workers "cheated" and did not stay stopped. I did not mind being around smokers for many years and did not want to smoke when I was around them. My addiction was physical and psychological. We addressed both. I am not an ex-smoker, I am now a non-smoker. The first week we monitored when we smoked, writing it in a journal given to us. Second week we reduced the tar and nicotine of the cigarettes we smoked. We chose a room we would not smoke in. We would not smoke for 10 minutes before bed. Could not go to sleep until the ten minutes was reached. Same for waking up and smoking. We would not smoke after eating, drinking, etc. for 15 minutes, then 20 minutes, etc. We rec'd "oral gratification kits" which were used after eating, contained toothbrush, floss, toothbrush and mouthwash. Even when eating out. We started small and expanded something each week. The day I chose to quit, I had a new car and did not want to smoke in it, we had a snow storm. It took me four hours to drive home, normally 45 minutes. Did not smoke, did not want to smoke. It's great. Also, we were told that weight gain is not from not smoking, it's from eating. I did gain weight over a two year period. But when I eat properly and exercise, I'm OK. PERHAPS THERE ARE THESE PROGRAMS STILL AVAILABLE TO HELP THOSE WHO WANT TO STOP. I worry that if others think that if they have to be around smokers in their like they may not stop as they have heard their chances are not good.

Folks, I was this family, trying to quit over and over and I tried when the first show appeared. I would get a week into it and all the reasons in my head would win. I even tried Chantix and felt so moody. Then the right information came to me, I read "The Easy Way" by Alan Carr and every excuse I came up with in my head on why I needed smoking, Alan Carr shows you how ridiculous all those reasons are and how "the monster" has ahold of us. If you are struggling, GET THAT BOOK - believe me, it will give you a new perspective. Yes, I've only been quit for 15 days now, but I AM QUIT for good, I will not ever smoke again and any urges I have because of the addiction I can easily put out of my head because I know it's "the monster" and the smoking phase of my life is over this time for good. I will breath free. GET THE BOOK!!! I can't believe Dr. Oz hasn't been told of this because it definitely puts those reasons to rest in your head.
