RUMMY... 7/9/99 - 2/11/08

Posted on Mar 18, 2008 1:04 AM

My working partner, one of my best friends, my 4-legged treasure, made her journey to the Rainbow Bridge in the early morning hours on Monday, February 11th . This is my tribute to a wonderful Bloodhound who served our community and beyond in her all-too-short lifetime. Rummy was met by thousands of people attending the many public events she participated in over the years, including the annual PetStravaganza and demos. at classes for some of our U. of I. students, Boy Scouts and other groups… or those who observed her working training trails or assisting law enforcement in missing persons cases.

Rummy excelled at working aged trails in which the subject left in a vehicle, and she did it with ease. Her most extraordinary case was a call-out by the Warren County (IN.) Sheriff in December of 2004, in the search for a missing 61-year-old man. It was the 15th day of his disappearance, and none of our Bloodhounds had ever worked a trail this aged, but we responded and started her on a good scent article placed outside the health center in Danville where he was last seen. She quickly picked up the scent, and followed it on what turned out to be a marathon trail. Once she cleared the city and indicated our subject went South on Route 1, we were able to use the “drop-trail” method and transport her in the sheriff’s vehicle, letting her out to check major intersections along the highways to determine direction of travel. She continued to Paris, IL., then to West Terre Haute and Terre Haute, IN., leading us to two salvage yards along the way where employees identified pictures of the man and his vehicle to the sheriff. A few other locations, including an off-the-path country store where he had likely stopped for some food, were also identified by Rummy… to confirm that we were still on the man’s trail. That first day, we logged 94.2 miles until we had to discontinue on Route 63 near Hinsdale, IN.

It wasn’t until the 23rd day of his disappearance that we were called back to resume the trail, but Rummy had no problem picking up the scent and continued to Route 41, where the search was called off near Boswell, IN., after logging another 56.3 miles. All totaled, she had covered 150.5 miles on an aged, highly contaminated vehicle trail! Two days after we got back home, there was a news report that the missing man had been found alive and well. He drove back into Illinois and was spotted hiding out in a small town by someone visiting friends or family and who happened to know and recognize him, as he had been a barber for many years. This person contacted the sheriff’s department and they brought our wayward missing person back home. He simply decided he was not going home, and drove for a few hundred miles in the process. While Rummy did not get to make the “find” as she tried so hard to do, she demonstrated the amazing capabilities of a great, scent-discriminating man-trailer and, I believe, probably holds a record for this marathon trail.

Now, it will be up to her littermate brother, Blackjack, and three of her daughters (Trail’s End Annie Oakley, …Calamity Jane, and …Lady Godiva/“G”) that we kept as our man-trailing stock, to continue in her place. Rummy was in great spirits for her Sunday breakfast, but when she wasn’t right there to greet me for her supper, I knew something was horribly wrong. When she finally came out of her house in the kennel building, I could see she was very depressed and was showing signs of bloat and torsion. Gastric dilatation and volvulus syndrome (GDV), occurs most often in the large breed dogs when the stomach dilates and twists… and it is a merciless killer without immediate detection and surgical intervention. We rushed her in to the U. of I. Small Animal Clinic, where she was x-rayed and stabilized for emergency surgery. I asked to see her before they took her in for the procedure and she was up on her sternum, which seemed a promising sign to an otherwise guarded prognosis. I remember how beautiful and stoic she looked, while I hugged her and told her how much I loved her… just as we do every day to each of our dogs. She was in most capable hands, and the surgeon was to call if anything came up. When the phone rang in the early hours, my whole world fell apart with the news that it was much worse than expected and a large portion of the tissue from the esophagus to most of the stomach was strangulated and beyond hope of saving. If I had been shot in the heart, it couldn’t have been more painful than the decision that had to be made and the devastation of losing such a great dog! They kept her stabilized so that I could go back in to be with her, she would not have to be alone at the end and I could say my last goodbye. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, but she had to be spared any more suffering.

Rummy will be buried on our farm beside those who passed before her; the part of her that has gone on to the Rainbow Bridge is in good company; her memory will be with us forever; and I will continue to include her in the greeting with the others each day… We love you, Rummy!

We have volunteered assistance with man-trailing Bloodhounds for 22+ years. A 1987 missing person/murder case was re-enacted for The New Detectives on the Discovery Channel in October of 2001. A recent demonstration by Rummy was taped by WCIA-TV (Channel 3) and aired Sunday, July 1st, 2007, on Illini Farm and Garden TV.

Wow, that is amazing and so so sad. You need to share that with Oprah, they are asking people for amazing pet stories right now on the main sight. I am so sorry for your loss, Rummy sure was amazing

Hi, Chrisnip;

Your kind words are most appreciated, as this loss has been especially hard to cope with! I worry every day about the others, because GDV can strike without warning... so I've been checking into the possibility of having the Gastropexy (stomach tacking procedure) done on them as a preventive measure. That won't prevent a dog from bloating, if that's going to happen anyway, but at least the stomach can't twist (which causes the tissue to start dying). This procedure buys some time to get the stomach decompressed, and you're not as likely to lose your dog.

Actually, I have been trying unsuccessfully for YEARS to get an E-mail message to Oprah on a subject very similar to the one you mentioned... not on one of my dogs, but on a case worked by a Bloodhound owned by a friend. That stolen baby case occurred in California in August of 2001, when a young woman drove off in a truck with a 14-day-old boy. Law enforcement promptly called in my friend and her Bloodhound, Molly, and they followed the scent-trail of the baby for more than 35 miles along busy California highways, from one town to another, also using the "drop-trail" method, and took them right to the FRONT DOOR of the kidnapper!! The baby was recovered alive and well and returned to his mother! This case was re-enacted for Animal Planet on the program called "Wild Rescues" in October of 2001; the segment was titled "Bloodhound Finds Baby" and has been repeated many times over the years, including more recently.

We felt that this was an excellent example of what a good, scent-discriminating man-trailer could do, if called in promptly on these missing persons cases! We named a proposed law we have been working on after this dog: "Molly's Law" advocates the timely use of scent-discriminating search dogs in these types of cases. I think the message board rules do not allow us to post links to websites, but anyone reading this who wants to check it out can do a Google search of "Molly's Law" and find the link to it on the PetitionOnline site. It is the one pertaining to search dogs... NOT the license plate law in Massachusetts by the same name. We were FIRST with the name of our law, but the state of Massachusetts had the funds and backing to get theirs passed before we could. We need all the signatures in support that we can get, and we hoped that if my friend could appear on Oprah's show and take Molly or one of her other Bloodhounds... we could get many thousands more supporters! Now, Molly is almost 14 years old and suffering from bone cancer, so she would be unable to make the trip; and it will be another sad day when my friend calls me with the inevitable bad news!

A few handlers, including myself, submitted the story about Molly several times over the past years (including recently)... hoping it would be considered for the Oprah Winfrey Show and that we could also present information on the "Molly's Law" project. However, we have never been contacted with a reply and my efforts to reach anyone by phone, E-mail or certified mail has failed! I honestly believe if Oprah's staff would allow her to read the submission, she would want to do it... but I think they probably ended up in the waste basket! I can't even get a secretary to call me back, and I don't know what else I can do... maybe it's just a sad testimonial of our times!

Sincerely,

Joyce

Thank you, Lindack324... I really was blessed to be owned by Rummy (and our others)! There are a lot of good Bloodhounds out there doing some excellent work across the country, but she did some amazing things that even left me in awe! In addition to that, she was a sweet girl and very intelligent... the whole package! I'm just glad I have 3 of her daughters and her littermate brother to continue her work!

Her littermate sister, Bonnie, was exported to the Philippines about 8 years ago and is owned by an American friend there who organized a 9-man Bloodhound team, to assist law enforcement and SAR work in that country... in addition to military operations! Bonnie's offspring are following in her steps, and they have also done a LOT of outstanding work! And one of Rummy's daughters, Toto's Linda, was exported to Nicaragua to assist LE and SAR there! A few days ago, I received some exciting news about her owner, a Catholic priest, who was voted by unanimous acclamation to become the next President of the General Assembly of the United Nations! He will be installed in this prestigious post in September and will be living in New York. Linda will not be able to come with him, but she has lots of human friends and family to look after her in Nicaragua... and Father will be making occasional trips back there. Just wanted to share this great news on some of our "fur-kids"!

Sincerely,

Joyce

Hi, Oogylover;

Thank you for your support and kind thoughts... and the beautiful poem you quoted! I also appreciate SO MUCH that you and others have signed in support of our proposed "Molly's Law"! I became convinced beyond any question during the Spring of 2002 that something more needed to be done in the law enforcement and SAR communities to help find lost, missing and abducted children and adults, and began talking to other search dog handlers about ways we could help. After being enraged over the constant bombardment of case after case in the news of children being abducted and brutally murdered, I sat at my computer one night and pounded out a lengthy E-mail that I sent to hundreds of search dog handlers in all areas of LE and SAR across the country... with the challenge that if they were as SICK of it as I was, couldn't we work together to draft a law intended to promote the use of dogs properly trained in scent-discrimination and other methods that could help find the victims. The response was unanimously in support of that idea, and we asked their suggestions and input. By mid-August of 2002, I submitted the first draft to all respondents for their review and input. It has been a long and painstaking process, because we have had to do everything long distance and by E-mail... but we have actually accomplished a great deal and have the fourth draft of the actual law completed.

It took a lot of work to fine-tune it, and it is possible we may go to a fifth draft, but it will not be publicly released until we are ready to seek passage as a national law. However, the Preface to Molly's Law is a true and correct overview and is freely shared on the internet through many online groups, forums, message boards, etc., to allow people the opportunity to read and sign in support. We really need to have a substantial number of signatures in order to ensure that our efforts to get it passed nationally will be successful. In addition, there are several other aspects of the overall program that have to be addressed, to be sure we have "covered all the bases"! Everything we have accomplished has been done on a "shoestring", so to speak, because we are NOT a registered organization and therefore not eligible to seek financial support for our cause! If we could just get the word out on a program like Oprah's, or one of the several others we have submitted to, it would surely bring in the signatures we need... but no one ever replies, and I just can't understand the media's apathy on this important issue. It's like pulling teeth to even get our local newspaper to print an article on it! I haven't contacted Best Friends Animal Society or Ellen Degeneres, but may have to give them a try... so thank you for those suggestions!

My condolences to you, also, on the loss of your beloved Lab! I fully support your work to help stop animal suffering in his memory; it will do much to see you through this difficult time, and a wonderful and lasting way to show your love for a loyal companion! Unfortunately, what you said about politics and power is true; but, working together, "The People" can and will be heard! I am not familiar with the example you gave of one of Ellen's guests, so I am unable to reply to that. Thanks again... and my Blessings go out to you, also!

Sincerely,

Joyce

Hi Joyce,

I posted a 2nd reponse yesterday, 3/22, and it also disappeared. The 1st post had a poem and I found out that is not allowed. I am not 100% clear on the house rules here (read them After my 1st post), perhaps they do not want anyone to mention celebrity names or petitions, and that may be why my 2nd post also disappeared? Tried to send a message to harpo bear to clarify, but the inbox is full and my message will not go through. Did you get a chance to read my 2nd post here? If not, I can private message you, if this is allowed through private messages?

I understand why they have house rules like this, it keeps it clean. I have done a lot of research recently on puppy mills and have found reputable websites (rescue groups) which had links to non-reputable websites.

Hi, Oogylover;

I read the post with the nice poem, and responded to it in my previous reply; however, I don't recall seeing a second one. I went back through the "Edit Your Profile" page to see if there was a feature to subscribe to a topic or thread and didn't find one; didn't see a "Private Message" feature, either. If anyone knows whether these options exist and how to activate them, maybe they will let us know.

Is "Harpo Bear" the list monitor to whom we address these kinds of questions? If so, where do we find the link to E-mail him/her? Also, if "Harpo Bear" is an assistant to Oprah, might this person be able to tell me how to get a message through... or pass it on to Oprah for me? Even Certified Mail doesn't work... and submissions are limited to a certain number of words through the website format only. Sorry to stray from the topic, but you brought up some things I have been trying to find the answers to for a very long time!

"House Rules" are good; I belong to some other (outside) forums where discussions have become nothing short of libel and slander and are allowed to go unchecked, so I can live with a little law and order! ;-) Regarding your research on Puppy Mills... they need to be put out of business, and any of the Breed Rescue groups would surely be grateful if you called to their attention any links to those websites that may have inadvertently been posted on the Breed Rescue sites!

Thanks, again, for your support and everyone else's while I'm trying to deal with the loss of Rummy! As soon as I can get some time and dig myself out of this bottomless pit of sorrow, I want to work on a project to educate about Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (GDV) in large breed dogs and promote more research being done to help prevent it. Old dogs, young dogs, and everything in between (among what are considered the large and "deep-chested" breeds) are fair game for this merciless killer that strikes without warning... and I wish we could eradicate it forever! That may not be possible but, hopefully, we can do more to cut down the incidence or gain more time to get the needed medical and surgical intervention necessary to save our dogs!!

Sincerely,

Joyce

Joyce,

I sent you a private message. After you log in and go to the main Message Boards you will see an orange tab at the top where you can edit your profile and log out--below that you will see Oprah's picture and "MESSAGE BOARDS"--below that you should see a line to "Browse Oprah.." then "New" then "Your Stuff" then "History" then "Browse". Select "Your Stuff" and the last of 4 selections on the drop down menu says "private messages". Good Luck, Cindy

Hi, Oogylover;

Thanks for the helpful info.! I have tried twice to PM a reply to you, but keep getting an "Internal Server Error" message and my post is lost! Now, I've learned the hard way to save a copy of it! Will try again tomorrow, but see if this works in the meantime... everything is taking forever to come up on the screen, and the cursor is acting weird, too! Being on dial-up doesn't help...

Joyce,

I sent you another private message. Please read it first before frustrating yourself with your dial-up in the message boards. To continue with this thread:

Does anyone have any suggestions on what celebrity to contact regarding this issue? Or any celebrity or bloodhound rescue which might be involved with man-assisted hunts? (forgive me if that is not the correct terminology). Thinking along the lines of "give unwanted dogs a job"...? Any input would be appreciated. Cindy

Hi, Cindy and All;

I'm not getting over the loss of Rummy very well, but I have to make myself take those steps. It's going to be sad and hard for me to do it without her, but I've accepted an invitation to participate in the 3rd annual Petstravaganza on our U. of I. campus on April 26th. One of her daughters, Trail's End Lady Godiva (call name is "G") will do the honors of greeting the public and running some demo. trails, and a friend will be coming here on her way back home from a training seminar to help me with the display and demos with her dog, Bumper.

I've loved all of my Bloodhounds SO MUCH, and each loss has been terrible, but this one has hit me especially hard! We have decided that sometime after the first of May we will start having our Bloodhounds gastropexied, as a result of this tragedy... so I am saving all I can towards that, and I finally found a most reasonable vet to do it! My stomach is in knots each day... until I see that everyone is OK and passes their regular "inspection"! A 'pexied dog could still bloat, but this at least prevents the stomach from torsioning. Thanks for all your support!

Sincerely,

Joyce (Rummy on the list)

P.S. to All Readers -- For those who have not yet done so, please Google "Molly's Law" on your browser and visit our site (which is hosted on PetitionOnline.com), to read the Preface to the law we have written regarding the need for scent-discriminating search dogs to be used in missing persons cases. We need you to sign in support of this grass-roots effort and pass the link on to everyone you know... and encourage them to also sign and pass it on! Thank you SO MUCH for helping us in this important cause!!
