I cook them also in apple juice but I also add spices, cinnamon, and pumkin pie spice are my favorites. I will usually put 1 cup of oats and 3 1/2 cups of pure apple juice, and a Tbls. of spice in a slow cooker the night before. In the morning I toast some walnuts. I add the walnuts to the oats serve with ff milk and add some blueberries on top. This is my hands down favorite breakfast. I hope you enjoy.

I purchased a brand called "McCann's quick and easy steel cut Irish Oatmeal". The great thing is that you cook it on the top of the stove or in the microwave in only 5 minutes!!! I purchased it in my local specialty grocery store. You can ask your health food or grocery store to order it for you if they don't have it. It tastes great. The only ingredient is 100% whole grain Irish oats.
I love the Steel Cut oats however you loose a lot by buying the quick cook variety because of the processing and additives.
You can find that them at any whole foods type of store. Typically they are not found in any wal-mart or major grocery chains. Also, you can order them online from bobsredmill.com.
As far as preparation--well there really isn't much to it. You boil water and add the oats and let them cook for some amount of time--20 minutes maybe. The instructions are on the package. Oatmeal reheats very well also so you can make a big batch on the weekend and reheat some every morning.
Not every shop sells them, where I live there is only one health store that stocks them. Luckily they are not expensive.
I cook them by boiling some water in a jug and pouring it into a saucepan. I put the oats in the boiling water, put the lid on and just leave it on the counter. About 10 - 15 minutes later I come back and drain them. They are quite nice with some kind of sweetner and a bit of milk.
Here's a tip for cooking your steel cut oats that no one has mentioned yet. Before going to bed at night measure your oats into the sauce pan with twice that amount of water and let them soak overnight. (For my husband and I, I use about 1 cup steel cut oats and two cups of water.) Then it only takes a 5-10 minute simmer in the morning. Stir frequently. Sometimes I add some raisins or dried cherries. I top with a splash of Silk and a tablespoon or so ofreal maple syrup. Delicious and keeps me running all morning.
Try it.

That sounds great because otherwise the cooking time is 30+min. They are delicious with a few walnuts, fruit and a dab of yogurt. I find they reheat OK in the microwave as long as you don't OVERHEAT them. . . so for those in a hurry, you can cook up a larger batch and just scoop and reheat for a few days. I'm watching simple sugars, so not sure about the apple juice to cook them in, might be better to just add a little juice when serving (?) The oats are nutty and delicious, nutritious. RAIN
Dr. Oz talks about the steel cut oats all the time... I bought some, but I don't know what to do with them. How do I cook them? Does anyone have any good recipes ?
thanks!
They are whole grain oats cut with steel blades. The Quaker Oats Old-Fashioned are whole grain oats, only they were steamed and rolled flat.
If you cook the steel cut oats it takes forever! But if you used the Quaker Oats Old-Fashioned oats, it takes about 10 minutes max, maybe not even that much. But don't but the Quick Cooking Quaker Oats, that won't do what you need it to do for your body.
But the choice is up to you.
If you decide to do the steel cut oats, cook them at night as someone had suggested and then it will be ready for you the next day.
As far as using apple juice is concerned, that's really defeating the purpose, especially if you are a diabetic or trying to watch your sugar.
I put cinnamon, a banana, a few walnuts, and a few almonds on mine and stir good and eat it that way. The banana gives it enough sweetness that you don't need any other sweetener.
I don't even use Splenda anymore as my daughter's organic chemistry professor told her it has the chemical structure of DEET! So good-bye all artifical sweetners!
