To be clear, I don't blog, never do chat in chat rooms, etc., but I feel compelled to respond to about this book! I just purchased this book two days ago, and I have just started getting into it. YOU MUST BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING WITH WEIGHT. You know how Oprah has been saying for years that it is not the food that is making you fat, but what is eating at you? This book approaches it head on and in a way that has clicked for me in the sense that I need to wake up to my outside clutter before I can wake up to the internal clutter. This has never really been approached on how to deal with it prior to this. I have diligently watched her show through the years, with Bob Greene and others, and agree with his take on weight loss - get moving for one, but have been too depressed to actually get going. After just a few pages of this book, I have already started cleaning out my bookshelves and have donated them to a local used bookstore and am going to give the credit to kids who like to read, but can't afford to buy books at a local school. I am looking forward to finishing this book, and having more clarity and less clutter.

My home is very neat and clean except for my large clothing closet. It's hard to even walk in there now without clearing things away. Hmmmm. In the past two years I have gained a lot of weight for my small boned frame and have now three sizes of clothing in the closet.
This one closet is also giving me panic attacks and I am having a hard time figuring out why I don't just delve into it. My mother taught me that cleaning always helped clear the mind and she was very right. When in a fog of depression, cleaning and organizing has always helped me yet, I am allowing this closet to keep gnawing at me.
I have recently embarked on a new diet regimen (way of life) which I have well researched and prepared for called the Genotype diet. I want very much to restore my health and wellbeing. I cleaned my kitchen cupboards out and rid them from any food I am to stay away from. Also, stocked up on the foods that are called superfoods. I thought after I did all that, getting started would be no problem; but I was so very wrong. For encouragement for something I already know I will purchase the book.
thanks for the recommendation

Hi Suhenna, I was once in exactly the same place that you are. I had three different sizes of clothing in my wardrobe as my weight had fluctuated so much (mostly due to massive weight gain during pregnancy). One day I decided enough was enough so I sorted my wardrobe into three piles. 1. Clothes I can fit into now. 2. Clothes I will never fit into again (both too big and toooo small) and 3. Clothes I want to fit into again. I only put the clothes I could fit into back in my wardrobe. I put all the ones I wanted to fit into in an easily accessible box and I donated to charity all the clothes I would never wear again. Then the hard bit came! I embarked on a healthier approach to my diet and gradually lost weight. As I started to fit into the clothes in the box I would replace one of my 'larger sized' items with one I now fitted into. It's two years later and I no longer have the box nor any of the larger clothes. It really worked for me.
I know that this might just be a solutin that only worked for me but I wante to let you know that it can be done. Good luck to you and good for you for taking the steps!

I totally agree that clutter affects your weight! I am a widow with 4 children (18, 16, 11, &8yrs.). The unfortunate part of all this is the fact that my late husband was the organized and structured person. It has been 51/2 years since he passed away. Over time, I had some live in help, but, could no longer afford that. Having this type of help only hid the real issues here, and there had always been some level of clutter anyway. I am a A.D.H.D. with Dyslexia person. Three of my children have some form of the Dyslexia, and of course, there is no such thing as Dyslexia without A.D.H.D.! With A.D.H.D. comes all of the disorganization. My youngest child has a language based issue and auditory processing disorder. Once I gave up the help because of finances, the clutter showed up very quickly! I had the help of a personal organizer early on, but, her approach was very different than that of Peter Walsh. She did the work for me. I am now while reading Peter’s first book starting to get a handle on some of the clutter and buying decisions. On any giving day though, I wish that I could just concentrate on me and my disorganization, a structure issues and not have the added issues of the children and home ownership! If I can’t get a handle on me, how do I get a handle on the rest of it? All of this chaos has led to so much stress which leads to the financial issues and health issues! Some days I just wish I could wake up from the ongoing nightmare!! My weight and that of my 16yr old son has gotten totally out of control. I so badly want to get us all out at times to have some “active family fun”, but, it never seems to happen. I always feel like there is something hanging over my head that needs to get done because of the chaos, and then it also becomes a money issue! How do I get the help that we truly need! I want to help my children and move forward with my life. They need me and I need them! I just want the cycle of chaos to end here in this generation so they can realize more success in their live! I ended up donating sall my old clothes--even coats. I wii have a lotof time on my hands in May--thats when I can really get alot more done. One of my Daughters came home from college for the summer and I worked with her on her old things--ie books, dolls, etc. She was so happy when it was all done------she even painted her room. Even before seeing this show, I have to agree with his philosophy! (And that title made me burst out loud laughing!)
When my house is clean and organized, I find that I have more ENERGY! I feel physically lighter and I want to move around, take a walk, get on my bike. When my house is cluttered, I just want to "burrow in", get on the Internet and open my bag of Fritos. I find that I am INTIMIDATED and DISCOURAGED by all that clutter... And how do I deal with those feelings? I EAT.

Peter!
Your book? Changed my relationship with my mom and changed her life! Thanks, thanks, thanks! I'd hug you but you're pretty far from here.
The cluttered homes on the show were NOTHING compared to mom's place and I'm not even lying. I'll spare you the details (it makes me feel ill).
I got the book from the library for her (books were a huge part of the clutter) but she never read it. So I tried again, reserving it in her name for her to pick up. She picked it up, read it, then told me about this amazing book she just read about clearing clutter from your life. (I played dumb, I'm a good daughter.)
End result: clutter is gone (no easy task)! Mom's lost weight. Things are awesome. You rock.
XOXO from the frozen tundra of Canada!

Oh my God, this is me! I have always known that I was a pack rat, but in the last 6 years it has become overwhelming. The clutter was literally making me sick. I could hardly get into my bed at night with out pushing something out of the way. My kids always say mommy we need to clean the house. I recently moved and I said I was not going to take the clutter with me. Good right? I threw tons of stuff away...moved from a 3 bedroom house with big kitchen and pantry to a 2 bedroom apartment. I never had real furniture to make my house look like a home and still don't. Here's the kicker, even with all this empty space...IT'S CLUTTERED. What's a girl to do? :-((

When I was in my 20s, I moved from Atlanta to Los Angeles. I was a collector of stuff. I had carefully sorted through all my belongings and moved only the things I thought were important. However, when my apartment burned down shortly after the move, I could barely remember what I had when my insurance company asked for a list! This moment in my life proved to be a blessing and changed my perspective forever about my feelings toward stuff!

Hi, thank you for your advice and how you managed to clear out your closet. I am going to do it just as you did.
It's funny how we know this stuff and forget to put it in practice. Nine years ago I lost 2 dress sizes and had very little money to buy new clothes. I read a book that mentioned if we clear the clutter then we make room for what we need. So I decided to give away all the clothes that no longer fit and guess what happened? Yes, I had the money to buy new clothes. I have no clue really how that worked out ,but it did.
I am going to the library tomorrow get the book. I am sure it's an interesting read. Can't wait for the show.
Again, thank you for the encouragement and advice.

I look around my house and my clutter is just as bad or worse then the person you had on you show. I see that I have a problem but it was passed down from my mother because her house is worse then mine. I need help but I am afraid to let go of the things that I've bought. I can't see my butt because my stomach and eyes are to big. I love sweets, breads, milk, ice cream and cookies because they are a comfort food. I love my mother and I want to be as smart and loving like her but what I see in her is pain because she is very overweight and eating and having stuff makes her happy and I want to help her to be happy which I know is not helping her with her problems.
My son is living with my parents and my son too is a slob. He is not overweight but he has issues like addicted to gaming on the computer and not letting go of the things he had endured when he spent his 19th year of his life in Iraq he is 23 now. He also eats only crap food.
The big thing I buy is books. I buy them to make me feel smarter. I haven't read hardly any of them. I pick up a book and start reading and when I get to a word that is to hard I give up the book and go find something to eat in the kitchen. I buy them only to believe I'm smart. Go-figure.
This is three generation of learned clutter of behavior, HOW DO WE STOP THIS? Me buying another book is not going to help me if I don't understand what Peter means if or when I buy his book.
It was a great show and I see that I have a problem but I don't know where to start......
Thanks for all you do,
Princess Clutter

Today's show really spoke to me-I'm having clutter issues in the midst of a mid life crisis, etc. BUT, the part that spoke volumes was the advice at the end of the show. Oprah was right on with not everyone can call Lowes, and for me, working through my own mess (I've had people offer to help me) is very important.
Part of how my house got this way is looking for quick easy ways to make me be who I wished I was-the slow approach may be, for me, the one that lasts.
I did get a lot of validation from the emotional attachment the wife had to some of her stuff, especially her kitchen. I know how she feels, but I am proud of her for having the courage to step out away from who she thought she should be and towards who she is going to be.
