After sustaining a life-threatening spinal cord injury during a tackle, doctors said NFL football star Kevin Everett would never walk again. Now, here for his first television interview since the injury, Everett does what no one ever thought would be possible. Then, Oprah talks to Denver Bronco Domenik Hixon, the player involved in the tackle that injured Kevin. And, the doctor who saved Kevin's life discusses his miraculous recovery. It's amazing medical miracles with Dr. Oz.

Kevin Everett is a Living Testimony that God is a miracle worker through modern medicine. As a family member when we heard about Kevin's injury we were all asleep it was early Sunday evening. The phone rang and it was my Pastor's wife calling to see if we had heard anything about Kevin. They know he was our cousin, Once I realized what had happened told my family. Everyone in was shock but during that moment I remembered the God that we serve. I told God I don't know why this happening but you do everything for reason. I began to pray for healing and for God to give the doctors the knowledge and understanding to save Kevin and to give has mother peace and comfort. As the evening past we talked to Kevin's sister she said mom could not come to the phone because she was trying to get information on Kevin as well as catch the earliest flight to Buffalo. I watched the news and that evening may pastor's wife called again and said that they had just finished pray for Kevin and during the prayer she was thanking God for mending, healing and restoration. And I told her that as they were praying that very moment the doctors were finishing Kevin's surgery. God was working his divine miracle. After that day we heard so many different things Kevin would never walk again. My oldest daughter went to school that week and everyday there were so many opinions on what Kevin's condition would be and something just were not even true. She began to just tell people "You really don't know how strong Kevin really is, he is a fighter Kevin will be fine." As the weeks past Left messages on his mother cell phone giving her encouraging words. Each day God did a new miracle that could not be explain with Kevin's daily progress. I will leave you with this:
" GOD + FAITH+WILLING(to go forward Dr. Cappuccino)+ABLE(to do whatever it takes)= A MIRACLE KEVIN EVERETT"

My husband was Kevin’s nurse right after his surgery. Last April he was in an accident and he couldn’t walk for 3 months. In August he went back to work, but he couldn’t do patient care. The week before the game where Kevin was injured was my husband's first week back in the neuro ICU. The day of the game, he was on nightshift. I was watching the news and heard they took Kevin to Gates Hospital. It seemed strange to me because Gates isn’t a trauma center and I was thinking they were wrong. Out of curiosity I called my husband and he said yes, they had a very interesting patient. He couldn’t tell me any more. Later he called and all he said was please pray for me. He’s my patient when he comes out of OR. My husband knows his ability to do his job comes from God. Our sons and I began to pray. I remember thinking the timing was amazing. It wasn’t a coincidence he returned to full duty the week before the game. He believes prayer is a powerful source of strength and healing and prays for everyone he takes care of. Some patients welcome his offer, others he simply prays for silently while he takes care of them. He prayed continually for Kevin. Of course he wasn’t the only one, many people were praying. And while I know God worked through the outstanding doctors, nurses, and the science that developed the treatment Kevin received, I firmly believe prayer was a powerful piece of his road to recovery. I hope it is seen that way on the show.

I am a buffalo bills fan and proud of it...even though they lost many super bowls. Just yesterday when i was in my local Barnes and Noble bookstore I came across Kevin's book "Standing Tall". I looked through it, and it seems like a good book.
I think i have to go back and buy it for my brother who was a quaterback for the junior varsity football team at his school.
Back in Sept during my brother's first game, he was running a quaterback keeper play, while running the ball he got hit, he fell and couldn't get up. It turned out that he tore his ACL. After surgery and therapy my brother is doing great.
School baseball tryouts are around the corner, and just the other day my brother's doctor gave him the OK to participate in the tryouts.
Thank God for great doctors. :D

While I am very happy for Kevin Everett and his mother for his miraculous recovery, I am also envious. Our two sons broke their necks in a diving accident on June 25, 2005. They both broke their C-5 vertebrae. Neither one of them had insurance at the time. Thankfully, the younger one has fully recovered, following surgery. However, he still owes thousands of dollars in medical bills. Our older son was not as lucky. He is and has been, since the accident, a quadriplegic. Since he had no insurance either, he was placed on Medicaid. Kevin Everett was extremely lucky that he had the insurance and the money to pay for his recovery. Otherwise, he would most likely, be living his life in a wheelchair, being totally dependent on someone else for his daily needs. It is so sad those with money are able to "purchase" healing and recovery in our society while those without are left to suffer.

Our granddaughter was 10 years old when she saw a Michael Jordon ad on television about organ donation. She asked our daughter what organ donation was and her immediate response to the explanation? "Why wouldn't everyone do that?" That is the kind of kid she was. Only two weeks before giving up her Christmas vacation, and presents, etc. to work with us on a medical mission trip to the interior of Mexico, she was hit by a car on her way home from school and killed instantly. She was 11. There was never any question about organ donation after she died. It was what she wanted.

I've had a number of small operations and before they wheel me to the OR, I say two things to my wife:

"There shouldn't be any problems, but just in case ...
... slice me up & pass me around."

The other thing is (obviously): "I love you".

Besides, I'm o+ blood type -- almost a perfect donor.

What's the difference betwixt donating blood and organs - aside from the fact blood is renewable. The organs are *renewable* ... to someone else.

As for people being apprehensive when approached for permission to donate:

Could you walk into a room of the recipients and say, "You're going to die. I want to bury them in one piece.

Could you say the same thing to relatives or friends of the recipients?

Oprah, your show today was very touching. One of the best things to give is the gift of life. About 2 and a half years ago my cousin, Adam, died in a car accident at the age of 17. Adam was my aunt and uncle's only child. He did not even get to graduate high school. Adam was an organ donor and donated his corneas, tissues, and organs at the time of his unexpected death. He has saved 8 lives! After watching Jason Ray's story, I feel like I can relate to his family. It is amazing how Adam is living on in 8 people. My family has lost a loved one, but it is reasurring to see that when one person dies, 8 others recieve life. I do believe God had a plan....

I watched Oprah's show today with Dr. Oz and Kevin Everett, and tears in my eyes. Tears at Kevin's good fortune to have a doctor such as Dr. Cappuccino and hopefully, the wisdom of Dr. Cappuccino will be passed on.

In 1972 my husband, a Civil Engineer fell from a 6' step ladder. He sustained a C4 injury which, of course left him a quadriplegic for the next 21 years.

It wasn't too long afterward, that an article was written about a doctor in Canada, who used the "successful" method Dr. Cappuccino used on Kevin. I kept that article, never understanding why it was deemed "experimental" and not used in this country.

I understand, Dr. Cappuccino's trepidation, but also admire him greatly for finally acknowledging that spinal cord injuries, if treated promptly, do not always have to be so devastating.

May I suggest that it was not only the excellent care that Kevin Everett received immediately, including the cold treatment, but the fact that, apart from his catostrophic injury, he was, and is, in extraordinary physical shape. The muscles in his neck, compared to the ordinary person, are probably extremely well-developed, and exceedingly strong. These muscles might have acted as a natural neck brace to protect his spinal cord from further injury. One more reason for us all to become our most physically fit selves.

I am touched by today's show and have tears streaming down my face. Just this morning in prayer I asked God for a medical miracle. I not only asked, I claimed that my son would become the miracle I asked for. I had no idea what today's show was about, and usually I am at work and miss the show, but today I was here to get what I believe is a "sign" that I too can experience a medical miracle. One month to the day after Kevin Everett suffered his spinal injury, my 23 year old son had a massive heart attack. He is an ex-army ranger and had served two deployments during his 4 years in the military. I thought the worst was behind us....he had survived the war and come home alive and whole. When he had the heart attack he was just 4 days from finishing a 4 month training program to become a police officer. The attending ambulance and first hospital did not believe he was having a heart attack and so the golden hour went by without help. In fact he had a 100 % block to his LAD which is the main artery in the heart. The block was caused by a blood clot rather than narrowing of his artery. The doctors have still not found the cause of the blood clot. I am an organ donor and honor each relative who has to make the decision.....but look how many lives are saved by organ donation. I pray my son's heart will never need to be replaced but I have faith if it ever comes to that, he could lead a new life. As I was writing this, my son stopped in to say hello. He amazes me every day with his positive attitude and willingness to fight on and heal. He has scarring to his heart and although it is nearly impossible to heal scars...today, as I said, I am claiming a healing of his heart. Todays show gave me hope.

Wow! That was an amazing show. I haven't watched in some time, and am grateful that today was the one I caught. I watched with my husband and 11 year old son. It took us nearly 2 hours to get through the show, as we had to keep stopping the DVR to have discussions with our son. He was so invested in the stories that he just had question after question. He told us that he wanted to be either a pilot (his goal since he was 4) or if he couldn't be that, a doctor that did research to help people like them. What am amazing show! Thank you for starting this conversation between us. Organ donors? You bet all three of us have declared it.

Oprah, I am completely touched by this story. I have a 21 year old son, Matthew, who was diagnosed with spinal stenosis while he was at the University of Idaho in Moscow, ID. He played in the spring ball game in April of 2005 and as my husband was going through cancer treatments Matt called me from the doctors office in September and explained about the stenosis. He was able to suit up for 1 game and was not able to suit up again. I think it is important for all high school and college trainers to pay attention to kids who receive stingers during practices or games. I believe that Barry Steele at the University of Idaho saved my sons life. Thank you for bringing spinal cord injuries to the football community. Amy O'Donnell
