Nancy Ajram/Lebanon/Conservative

Dear Oprah,

We as Lebanese are very disappointed in the show in regards to you stating that lebanon is a conservative country. You and I, think most of the Americans are too ignorant to know what exactly you are saying. If you would actually sitdown and research what is Lebanon, and the middle east and Muslims your pathetic opinion would change. Firstly, most of your celebraties are very aquainted with Elie Saab, a famous Fashion designer who dresses Beyonce, Halle Berry, and many others(I wonder if his wife is wearing a Veil or a burka). The Lebanese have hosted celebs as well, like Angelina Jolie, Cuba Goodin Junior, Sylverstor stallone, pussy Cat dolls, Akon, David Guetta, DJ Tiesto, Mariah Carey, Paul Anka, Michael Bolton, amongst many more..We were the hottest destination both last year and this year, Lebanese night scene was voted number !, Sk Bar beirut came in as the best nightclub in the world, and if you reserach once again, u will know that we were on the cover of Traveler CondeNaste a few years back..Go and also read New York Times in July with a special on Lebanon.

You went ballsitic in December 07 when you turned the whole incident of your trip to Hermes in Paris into a racist problem where all it was was you not being welcomed into the store after closing hours, so We as lebanese right now feel the same way, and we suggest you apologize to the lebanese People and to LEBANON.

As our Minister of tourism invited you to Lebanon, please do take up his offer, so that you can see for yourself what Lebanon, and the Middle east is actually all about. What a shame that someone as famous and influential as you would say something like that without the proper research

Regards

Ran

You are right Rania, Oprah and all the world should not underestimate the Lebanese population.

They think they are better but they should be ashamed to not using reliable information and not

watch out when they are writing their text.

check facebook , twitter.... and read what the Lebanease talking about this show.... I think she did not do her homework about lebanon, may be she did not hear about the best Drs in lebanon, best fashion designer , best novelist, ..WE ARE THE BEST.

proud lebanese .

It is annoying how the western media is always stereotyping the middle east.. we would've expected better from oprah than showing misleading photographs and untruthful information about lebanon. Our country is a healthy combination between liberal and conservative countries, famous for its education and achievments, cultural diversity, artists, cuisine, unique geography, touristic sites, and modern lifestyle. Generalizing such an oversight to a country or a whole region by using inaccurate and biased sources is very disappointing.

It's a shame that someone ( I used to consider a great person ) ; Oprah, would do such an inaccurate and false report.

I don't know if she wantedto fill up a few minutes of the show time, so she just randomly put such a segment on her show.

Besides; what was the purpose of that segment- besides attempting to show a faulty and wrong ugly side of Lebanon-

BREAKING NEWS OPRAH: Lebanon is neither Afghanistan nor Saudi Arabia. The people of Lebanon are extremley open minded and liberal. Women walk in regular clothes rather than these veils or whatever images were posted....

Besides, I can't believe Nancy Ajram was described as such a person, performing sexual moves or whatever...

Just a tip Oprah, for next time... u know, so that you don't lose all your fans... Next time, make sure you and your team perform some more research on a topic before previewing it.

the image of arabic countries taken by western ones is that all arabic countries are the same, that is conservative, no rights are given to women, primitive and so on...

lebanon on the contary is one of, or the only one which isnt the similar to the rest!

we, as christian lebanese citizens do not agree on having a report on the most influential show in the world in which you emphasize on the fact that all lebanese are muslim and conservative! sorry to report it to you but you and ur team were wrong and you must fix it in a certain way!

either do your researches properly and reveal the real image to lebanon or visit us and i am sure you will change your mind!

Respect,

hello everyone. hope all is fine
i just wanted to comment on this topic, first of all oprah didnt speak in general about lebanon soo deeply conservative, she meant places like * day3a, jnub, b3albak, trablos* she didnt mean all lebanon, u should lsn again what she said, am sure u did understand it wrong. and second i dont think oprah this generous and very geniune person will speak about lebanon in a bad way, and disrespect lebanese ppl, and comon for what reason would she do such a thing, she knows that all world wide watches her show and love it, why would she say such things that she might know she will lose popularity in most arab countries specially lebanon. please i know most of u are upset and outraged about this story, but u should go indepth and see that she didnt mean to speak about lebanon in this way.

Thank you !

hi Rana, i don't quite understand your comment. i am from mina Tripoli, and i don't think that's where you are from. i am not conservative, so are many families in Tripoli. plus, which "day3a"? do you mean Deddeh?Koura? do you mean these villages? because i think once again it's not true. you can't generalise such a statement. secondly, Oprah is not God, and the crew members do make mistakes, i don't think there was a deep research about Lebanon specifically, because as we are all aware it's different from its neighbours. plus, how did you realise that she doesn't mean anything bad about Lebanon, and the rest od the commentators understood ver well the message?

hey again.
first i have many friends from all lebanon, tripoli, day3a everywhere. and trust me they are conservative families, u cannot generalise lebanon as all freedom, there are families which is really conservative. second dont think am not lebanese i am and from beirut but i live in uae. okay lets set it straight, if she wants to say bad things abt lebanon why did she introduce nancy to her show and many other lebanese singers ?! plus for more information oprah prepares her shows weeks before. and like u are a lebanese i am too, so no difference ! anyways everyone has his own opinions about this topic and am quite sure that i stated my comment very right and am satisfied ! and please dnt think am standing in oprah's line and not my country, but am standing for the right.

regards..

Dear Rana,

Firstly, Nancy Ajram is very decent in appearance compared to other Lebanese
female divas that are aired on Melody and Rotana TV so she couldn't be taken as
an example of what Oprah is referring to. Secondly, you cannot generalize and
say that there are a lot of conservative families, that is their right because
they don't want to follow too much of the Westernized societies, saying all
that you can also find extremely conservative families in the US. Thirdly, I
think Oprah in fact, did a segment about Nancy Ajram not to show how much of a
diva she is but to give a bad impression about Lebanon by comparing the two
extremes, but yet, she only talked about the conservative side and not what you
see in nightclubs, the casino, and the beaches in Lebanon, and Oprah Whinfrey
is known for exaggeration on certain topics. Yes Rana, everybody is entiteled
to an opinion, but you are standing in Oprah's line and not on your country's side.

Regards,
Ran

Hello, it was a mistake that was corrected later, people do mistakes. She meant the middle east region in generale is a conservative region, her main subject was Nancy Ajram not Lebanon. Regards Joe

dear Ran,

first, nancy ajram is not that very decent diva compared to other divas, if this is true then why was she eliminated and not allowed to sing in egypt ?! second, i meant that when oprah stated that lebanon is **deeply conservative** she didnt show all lebanon, she showed some pictures which i think that its true, bcoz many states in lebanon are conservative, and maybe it is wrong to show it on national television but oprah didnt mean to humilate lebanese ppl, what she said that nancy ajram as a figure for those deeply conservative states which me and you know about, jnub w da7ye etc.. thirdly, u think oprah or anyone who is wise will introduce a lebanese singer and humilate her/his country infront of thousands of ppl ?!?! comon
and in some of her interviews oprah did say she visited lebanon and she loved it aloot, so why u think she would speak in such a bad way about lebanon ? and for more information she knows that lebanon is a highly tourist country, why u think she would say that , for the sake of politics? or sake of money ? or sake of jealousy ?! to me none from them.
i told you i always stand with the right, even thought she said a word about my country, i will atleast try to understand very carefully then il decide if what she said was a humiliation to my country or no. and for this i think she didnt. and many others are with me !

thank you !

hey.... im just going to start off by saying im outraged about this .. im a lebanese canadian and every year i travel to a different arab country and of all countries i've visited lebanon is the least conservative yes there are conservtive areas in lebanon but they are the areas where te people keep to themselves like u said da7ye and even there NOBODY KNOWS WHAT HAPPENS BEHIND CLOSED DOORS! u cant speak for all of lebanon and say we are conservative because u know some families who are conservative. and 80 percent of the girls who claim to be conservative and who are angels in ther parents eyes go out drink and .... u know... this day and age we watch tv we see movies we hear about stars we drink we smoke we move out and go to college we live seceret lives SECRET meaning u dont know what is going on. u would be surprised if u wittness what i wittnessed this summer.

which arab country do u see girls on the beach in bikins or short shorts walking around normally how many arab countries can say they have a mixture of religons in it? lebanon has christians sunni and shiaa muslims, drooz, and each group has its own beliefs and thoughts. and we get along but whether or not oprah meant lebanon or all arab countries she still had no reason to show a picture of a clearly poor lady or all the sand around the mosque that had nothing to do with nancy ajram. tell me when nancy went to areas like that? and u spoke about nancy not being allowed to go to egypt shes not the only singer who has had a show canceled and you dont know why her show was cancelled and noone does no matter what reason u hear unless ur nancy herself u cant judge her by missing a show in egypt.
