There was a great comment to my article, ¿2 Approaches to Heal Your Traumas from Past Lives¿ on this Oprah¿s forum. It asked, ¿Are we predestined to do the things that we do? Are we really making choices or following a predestined path?¿
What is destiny?
Life is truly like a journey. We start at our birth point. There are many paths, and as we come to intersections, we make decisions on which path to take. We have an overall plan -- prior to incarnation, we chose a set of life lessons so we want to experience certain events to learn the lessons. There are a few destinations that we don¿t want to miss. And then, there are also handful of secondary destinations that we love to visit if the situation is right. The life lessons usually prepare us to get to these destinations.
Now the interesting point is that the paths of life are fluid, unlike the freeways in the physical world. Our own choices and other peoples¿ choices influence the available paths and change the map constantly.
Destiny, in my humble opinion, is the plan we made ourselves before coming to this world. Each of us have a couple of non-negotiable destinies, experiences we absolutely must have. In my personal life, leaving my home country and immigrating to the USA was one of my destiny. In other words, my soul chose to be born in a different country to be born in so that I¿ll have a unique perspective when I grow up and come to the country I was meant to live as an adult. One of my life lesson is integration.
The role of free will
It¿s critical to remember the role of free will when we think about destiny. We all have free will. Even if you were born to a slave-like situation, you have your free will. Free will is the best gift God gave us.
Back to my analogy of life as a journey, we can use our free will to decide how to get to the destination. In fact, we are expected to exercise our free will to choose our path. We are not slaves nor order-takers. We are free souls and by taking the responsibility to choose our own path in our journey, we grow.
And just like in real life road trip, there are many paths to the same destination. From where I live to get to Seattle, taking I-5 is probably the fastest and most popular path. But there are back roads if I want to enjoy the scenery in a more leisurely manner. Or I can drive up to Portland and then take a train or a plane.
And freeway may not be the fastest way to drive. It usually is, but there may be an accident on the way. Getting off the freeway to enjoy a scenic lunch may prove to be the best option.
So, even if going to Seattle were my destiny (metaphorically speaking), there are plenty of rooms for my free will. We are not predestined to the details. If we were, we are like robots, and there is no room for our learning and growth. No, this universe is not designed that way. This is where we grow through trials and errors.
God is not a mean micro-manager who tells you what to do at every step. God loves you and gave you free will.
We chose our paths
It¿s also important to remember that we ourselves chose our destiny points. God, nor anyone else, handed over his plan for us. It all happened before we were incarnated, and we don¿t remember it very well because we received a ¿veil¿ when we were born, but still, it was you who chose your destiny.
I guess some people want to bark at this idea. You may be thinking, ¿I didn¿t choose this hard life. If I were to choose for myself, I would have chosen to be born in a nice family and set my destiny to be a famous rock star!¿
Well, becoming a rock star may or may not be your destiny. I don¿t know. But I do know that being born in a difficult family is not a show stopper to become a rock star. (Just check the bio of some celebs
) How you want to achieve this destiny, or whether you want to even start walking toward this place to begin with, is up to you.
Embrace your free will. Again, it¿s the most wonderful gift from God. Then you will know your destiny.
