Front yard

We have this front yard that is in dire need of a better curb appeal. The issue: a few feet away from the front door is a brick wall. Not a solid brick wall. The bricks are about 12"x12" and has a design which allows us to see through it a bit and yet have some privacy. I like the feel of the privacy (feng shui as well), but don't like the wall. That wall is about 40 years old and I feel it's going to be a hazard here in earthquake country. Any suggestions as to what to do? We've thought about bamboo, but I hear it can be quite the "weed" to control even if we put them in planters. I can't stick a tree there since the pipes from the house travel underground through there. I look forward to some suggestions.

Thanks!

Maybe hang up some bamboo matting? If have seen well made matts you can actually make windows in without it falling apart. In front of those mats you can plant some nice decorative grasses then. They aren't wild growing like most bamboos. There are lovely variaties, low and high and in different colors.

Maybe you have a photo for me so i can see what you mean and what kind of solution may fit best? I am a student Gardenarchitecture (in Holland) and i quite like these litlle challenges.

Maybe some high qualaty bamboo matting is an idea. If strong matts you can make windows in them without problems. And some nice grasses in front of it? There are some really nice variaties, they aren't wild grwoning like bamboo. Grasses come in low and high and many diverent colours.

Maybe you can send me a picture of the situation? I am a student Gardenarchitecture (in Europe) and i quite like these little challenges.
