Oprah Radio Format Change

Posted on Sep 28, 2009 2:24 PM

Dear Oprah Radio Friends,

You have requested more Oprah on Oprah Radio, and we are answering the call.

For the first time ever, audio from The Oprah Winfrey Show will be made available exclusively to listeners on Oprah Radio, SIRIUS 195 and XM 156. In addition to replaying the latest episode the day after it airs on TV, we will also be delivering daily classic shows from the 23-year history of The Oprah Show.

Based on this new format change, a number of your favorite hosts will be leaving the channel to continue to pursue their successful careers and to grow their brands. It has been an honor to work with these exceptional individuals, and we are grateful for the contributions they've made toward elevating the national dialogue and helping us all to live our best lives.

* Bob Greene
* Jean Chatzky
* Nate Berkus
* Peter Walsh
* Dr. Robin Smith

We encourage you to continue to follow their work and their wisdom.

Thanks for listening!

I must say how much I am going to miss Dr. Robin, Nate, amd Jean, they were some of my favorite shows. Hope they know how much they have all added value to my day and life.

Now for the format change, I love, Oprah, and am enjoying hearing her on the radio. However, with the new line up and being on the west coast, I don't get to hear Gayle at all! I am totally having "Gayle" withdrawls! I miss, miss, miss her! When I go to work in the morning no matter if I leave early or late, Oprah is on, and when I get off work in the evenings, Oprah is on with archive shows. There is not any variety, and it is making my withdrawls even worse!

Any chance to bring Gayle back to the west coast fans?

I'm not happy with the new program change on XM. I miss Rabbi Schmuley, Jean Chatzky and Marianne Williamson. The new format is BORING and I find I'm listening to other XM stations. Please rethink this change.

I like that we can hear the previous day's Oprah show, but I agree the new format is very boring. I miss all the former radio hosts especially Peter Walsh, Jean Chatzky and Marianne Williamson. Is this new format to save on costs? Except for listening to Gayle King, my listening time to Oprah Radio has greatly diminished.

Corny, please!! How stupid do you think listeners are? Have you ever once received a request from one of us to run or rerun the Oprah Winfrey (television) Show on XM Radio? Doubtful at best. The only conclusion I can reach about why such drastic and unpopular changes in programming have been made is that backwards, forwards, and upside down, Oprah Winfrey spells EGO. She can't get enough of herself. She has kept Gayle King's radio show for obvious reasons and Dr. Oz's because at the moment, she wants to promote his new television show, though undoubtedly, he will eventually be just another former flavor of the month, a club whose membership may soon include you, J. J., Charles, and Scott, if history is any indication. If those in power really cared about how listeners felt, they would have read the dozens and dozens of posts on the many and varied message boards and would have responded in kind--end of subject!

Dear Oprah staff,

I was an early investor in xm radio. I have watched the "Oprah show" and or taped/tivoed it for over 24+ years. I listened to "Oprah & Friends" on xm from day one. I am 59 years young and have NEVER been moved to write a complaint letter before today.

I don't know who or why the decision was made to change the XM format to the present state of "Oprah radio". At first, "Oprah radio" was still as wonderful but now.......I am thinking to cancel my subscription. I drive in my car different times during the day and loved to listen to all the informative, inspiring and thought provoking hosts. Now, I hear repeats of shows I have seen or the show from the day before. It seems every time I go to XM it's one big repeat. If XM can't afford to pay your hosts at least be honest about it. Ms. Winfrey's mission has always been to inspire & teach. We don't need to review what we already know! The idea that your viewers requested this change is disloyal to us and insulting. I am so disappointed and I know I represent ALL my friends and thousands upon thousands of other loyal listeners. Not sure how you will fix this mess! It might be a great idea to stop using the commercials touting the old show on the air now. That's really insulting! I personally suggest letting XM know that they are going to lose millions of subscribers who only subscribed to listen and learn from Oprah's friends. Their stock is in an awful state but I'm certain it will now get a whole lot worse. I sold mine!
Disappointed and no longer listening...

I have listened to Oprah XM radio since it started. I listened to it all the time. I loved all the people, Gayle, Bob, Jean, Nate, Peter, Dr. Robin, Marianne and John. They are ALL awesome and have helped me become a healthier and happier person. As much as I love the Oprah show (I watch that all the time as well), this is not why I used XM radio. I just can't believe that they think the new program is better. What a loss for so many. Needless to say, I am not renewing my XM. Bummer.

I agree with everyone else here that the lineup is extremely dissapointing! I've been listening since the beginning, and it used to be wonderful, but it seems that each year it gets worse. My favorites are Gayle and Dr. Oz, but I rarely get to be in the car when their respective shows are on. I used to LOVE listening to Rabbi Shmuley on my way home from work but he was axed, and I very much enjoyed Marianne Williamson and Oprah's soul series (I know they kept that but it's not on as often). I like Dr. Berman but I don't think she needs to be on for 2 hours straight, and it's all starting to get a bit repetitive. I understand that some of the hosts may have had to make other career moves, but I feel like they are just filling the air space with all these Oprah reruns, which I don't care about. I thought I would enjoy hearing the replays of current shows, but I realized that I'm missing a lot by only hearing the audio, so I'd rather just watch them on my DVR! And as much as I love Oprah and Gayle, I don't care to listen to them talk to each other about the magazine.

It's really too bad that this happened, because I love everything Oprah, and I was so happy to have positive, uplifting material to listen to when I drive. I guess I'll have to just stick with audio books.

My husband got me XM radio for my birthday, for the sole reason, that Oprah radio allowed me to find peace in my crazy day. That was a month ago. I can still cancel my subscription and am likely to. I am very dissapointed with the format change. The TV show is great, if you like TV shows (which I can tivo). I miss the thought provoking converstaions that were up to date. Gayle is ok, however she does not deliver the peace or tranquility that I really sought out, and her show seems to be on all the time. I cannot express how dissapointed I am in the change in format. The new Oprah format, does not lead me to my best life.

HarpoBear, PLEASE stop posting this disingenious, canned, public relations response to the genuine, heartfelt, real-world posts of your listeners. This is the same post that went up the day all the shows were canned, and it's been posted again this week on at least three of the threads in this message board. Here's what's clear from the listener posts: 1) If listeners want more Oprah on the radio, it sure as heck isn't in the form of continuous repeats of day-old or years-old material; 2) the variety, inspiration and immediacy of the former programming is sorely missed and 3) lots of people are dropping their XM subscriptions because there's not enough value in the current offering.

So, how about a real-life human response? Something like, "Wow, we thought you guys would really like hearing Oprah shows on the radio. Guess we were wrong. We're not sure what to do about it right now, but we're working on it. We'll get back to you as often as we can with updates on new programming. We think in ____ (fill in the blank as is realistic) months, we'll have a different line-up ready again."

Now, if this is really just about money and nothing can change--or it's just a matter of time until the entire station gets phased out--well, tell us that. Oh, right, that's what your post is really saying, isn't it?

coatlee1,

I totally agree. It infuriates me to see the response from HarpoBear, or that it was even used in the first place to announce the format change of the station. It is insulting to our intelligence.

I have thought a number of times over the past few weeks that if this had been handled in a better way by Oprah and her staff, with some honesty instead of using this ridiculous (and dishonest) spin, I would still grieve for what has been lost, but I would not be so angry. (At least not at Oprah and her staff)

Instead, because of the way this change has being handled, it has made me lose respect for Oprah and her brand. Maybe they do not care whether we like the station anymore if they are truly phasing it out. But someday, it will matter because it will influence whether we continue to support Oprah's other projects. Right now I have a very bad taste in my mouth because I do not feel like Oprah is who she seemed to be, based on the way this has been handled.

I wish that someone would consider this. I know that many of you who are posting also feel that way.

My husband purchased XM radio for me about a year ago and I discovered Oprah Radio. I fell in LOVE with Gayle King's show! Since I am a teacher, I got to hear it while running errands. Now that school is back in session, I looked forward to the repeats on Saturday's and now they are no more :( Please bring back the weekly recap on Saturday's - PLEASE! I absolutely love Gayle and miss her dearly.

I have to agree with this comment. I have listed to Oprah radio for some time now. I am from South Carolina and I just love it when Gayle comments on our governor. I liked the fact that you offer different people on your show like Jean, Dr. Laura, Dr. OZ and so on. When some of these people left I was hoping that they would be replaced by others like Suze Orman, my personal favorite.

I have started listening to other stations and maybe when I check you out again, you will come to your senses. Please incorporate more into your show lineup. We deserve more as devoted listeners of the past.
