keratin hair treatment

HELP!!! I got a keratin hair treament to take the frizz out of my hair! I went to a reputable salon that has extensive training, followed the instructions for aftercare. it has been ten days. I have washed it three times with the recommended shampoo for this treament. After the first wash, may haird starting falling out in handsfulls. I have washed it three times since getting it done. I will be bald by Christmas! Piles of hair! And everyone is "passing the buck". I even called the manufacturer of this particular Keratin treatment that the salon uses, which is based in Florida (the manufasturer), and "Go see a doctor, not our product". My hair started falling out right after the first wash.

Has anyone had a similar experience? What do i do now? I can't afford a doctor. This treatment was a 50th bday gift, and it looks like I'll be getting awig for my 51st bday!!!

SUGGESTIONS QUICK!! I am terrified of touching my hair, that is all it takes for it to fall out by the root. I can see the air follicle!

I recall reading something about hair care product interactions a long time ago...By any chance, did any of the products have salycylic acid or the like? I'm not sure that salycylic acid and keratin are problematic when used too close in a certain time period but it may be something to look into. Also look into other interactions.

If the salon is truly reputable, seems they would be more helpful.

Why did you wash your hair the second and third times?

The manufacturer may be right about seeing a doctor---I don't visit salons anymore but have spent $100. on occasion. A doctor visit (I don't see them anywore either) is about half that, plus test/treatment (out of pocket).

Praying about it could help you get to the root of the problem, too.

thanks for the reply!!! regarding "washing", I was told to wait three days and DO NOT GET IT WET or prespire. which I didn't do. This would ruin the "silky finish". I was also told to wash my hair no more than twice a week, each wash diminishing the finish. So, I washed it when told, hair started to fall out, and washed it once a week, only because it aggrevated the hair loss.

A dermatologist is around $300, $75 for an MD to tell me to go to a dermatologist. I might have to put off my education and channel that money into fixing this.

This week I am getting 4-6 inches cut. My hair is layered and 5 inches past my shoulders. it is sooo thin with all of this hair loss.

I did buy a serum for thining hair by Phyto ($50). It slowed the falling out down a little. But every where I look, I have hair... in my bed, bathroom, car. I am constantly brushing my arms, because I constantly feel hair falling.

I did have my hair colored two weeks prior, by the same stylist, who is trained in color/straightening. So, good point about other processes done, but the stylist knew my hair treatments.

The shampoo/conditioner that I was told to use ($45) is made for hair treated with the keratin process. it doesn' have "salt" (don't know chemical name). Seems that salt derivitive washes out the chemical process faster and is a danger to keeping it silky/shiny.

honestly, the "silky shiny" affect lasted one wash. Then it slowly is turning back to frizz, even with special shampoo.

I wasted $350. And, if this doesn't stop soon? I guarantee you I will be totally bald by Christmas!

I will be getting acupuncture for it, also i heard wheatgrass juice treatments to enhance growth.

i went online, (google short hair keratin treatment), and it is story after story of hair loss due to this treament.

My only saving grace is that I started with incredibly thick hair. i can only imagine what I would look like if I had normal or thin hair.

I'll keep you posted on results. Thanks again!

Stick to the basics.! I am a hair dresser in Raleigh Nc and people loose themselves when companies hype up new products and treatments. You need protein! It should stop your breakage, after that come behind it with a deep conditioner and add no heat what so ever to your hair. No heat , no tension, brush from the ends up to the scalp. Try Nexxus emergencie, and do not rough your hair up when u put it in, follow their instructions. Then come back with their conditioner called Ensure, or a moisturizing. Sleep in a satin cap to keep your hair from drying if you have very dry hair and be patient for the next couple of weeks. Massage your scalp to stimulate the blood flow and you should see some improvement soon. A dermatologist is more than likely tell you to stop putting chemicals in your hair or you had an allergic reaction. I think it was some type of chemical they put in your hair and your hair did not agree. Good Luck

Thank YOU!!!! Going out and getting the products you suggested. I am SOOO gentle with my hair, any friction causes hair loss. I am even hesitant in washing it, due to friction. I only brush/comb it after washing once/twice a week, other than that, gentle finger combing, and the hair falls out. Will these products also stop the hair from falling out from the root? I was told that the more i washed it, the more the chemical treatment washed out. Problem is, when I wash it, alot of hair falls out. Thank you so much for your suggestions!

WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I bought the Emergencie by Nexxus. While sitting here, I just ran my fingers gently through my hair and felt it stretch and break. Immediately went to the bathroom sink and wet that part of my hair. (It seems the right side is alot worse than the left!) I put Emergencie in, waited a f ew minutes, rinsed it out, and air drying. i can tell the difference immediately!

Through research, I discovered that hairloss is due to DHT (?) imabalance. I bought NIOXIN for chemically treated hair, which states it restores the DHT imbalance, as well as strenghtens hair shaft, and will start using it tomorrow. Its a foam for the scalp. Also, I will continue to use emergencie. I have Fakkai deep conitioner (the "leave on for 15-20 minutes" strength), which I will also use.

I read that biotin and L-lysene is good for hairloss, scalp, and promotes growth. Bought it.

The main problem is, after the hairloss being on the top of my list... is that I get nauteous when I think of it or have to deal with it. Like, those few seconds after a car wreck? So, even though denial is a wonderful thing emotionally, I am forcing myself to face this and remedy it quickly.

Again, thank you for the suggestion! Incredible product!

Alot of people are... search short hair keratin treament, and you will find alot of posts.

I have lost 50% of my hair in three weeks due to this Keratin treatment. I am using NIOXIN scalp treatment and the hair slowed the hair loss down 90% after the first use, unfortunately, I didn't use it sooner. NIIOXIN can be found at ULTA beauty supply, and most drug stores. Nioxin comes in dfifferent vaireties, I got the one for chemically treated hair.

Also, please read the above post from North Carolina stylist, who suggested great products. I am using Nexxus Emergencie and it is great! I also use Frederic Fakkai deep hair balm moisturizer. I will go and get Nexxus Humectress LEAVE IN moisturizer. AND< i do not use blow dryer or flat iron.

Nutrients for regrowth, healing, are 500 mg of biotin, and 500 mg of L-Lysine. I also take Reservatol antioxidents (Dr Oz 's fav). Its whats in wine. And Vit D. Also, I'm taking CELLFOOD by Lumina, which puts oxegyn in the system.

Its scary, isn't it? And the company that made the keratin treatment, Coppola, said "not my product"... ditto on salon.

This whole thing cost me around $800 with keratin treatment, tip, nutrients, hair care products.. and I will have to get 6" cut from a salon that specializes in "dry cuts".

Good Luck!

Going bald in Ohio replying here!

Went to the Dermatologist today. He gave me a shot of B-12, said take Biotin vitamins & prescribed 'Cordran Lotion'. Rub on the scalp everynight and wash out in the morning. Said it will work in stopping the hair loss. But I'm also going to purchase the Nioxin Scalp treatment like you said. I totally can't believe I paid money to do this to myself. By the time you figure salon costs, emergency repair costs to undo the process..... this stinks.

By the way, my stylist as well, said "it can't be out Keratin treatment, you must have a bad thyroid'. Had bloodwork done, Dr. checked for everything imaginable, my thyroid's perfect as well as every other level in my body. Only thing not perfect is this Coppola Keratin product.

Thanks for your tips!

Perfect timing with your post! In two hours I will be having my first appt w/family doctor. I will tell him about Cordran Lotion. WHat I noticed last night was my facial skin tastes bitter. I was eating ice cream, no napkin in reach, licked the side of my mouth... EWWW! Knew it wasn't soap residue. Then, tasted all around the outside of my mouth. Oh my God? Has this chemical spread from scalp to face in my system? Thats scary!!!!

I had a complete CBC bloodwork within a month prior to the treatment, and hormones balanced in the Spring... so, it appauls me that "its not my fault" is the answer from these companies/salons. Common sense... pre treatment, hair fine, immediate post treatment , substantial hair loss. My theory is, if it was due to hormones/stress/nutritional deficiencies, the hair loss would've occurred slowly and grandually, worsening through time. NOT almost in an instant, in great amounts.

I still have hair loss with Nioxin, but not nearly as much as before using it. I figure it will take time to get my scalp chemicals rebalanced.

I am up to the thousand dollar mark, including the cost of this treatment. I will be getting 8" of my hair cut, bringing it up to the nape, or collar level. My trademark was my thick, beautiful, blonde hair. Now? "see through" thin hair.

Google short hair keratin treatment.... alot of same stories.

THE COPPOLA COMPANY WHO MANUFACTURES THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN!!!! WHere's the FDA?? (I'd settle for pleasant customer service people!)

I am now contemplating a consult w/an attorney. Maybe if they have to pay, they will think twice about this.

This happened to me too and I am so sorry you had to go through this. It is dabsolutely devastating. I created a "group" on face book to get Keratin Straightening Products banned. I lost about 5 inches of hair over a 6 month period. It just would not stop breaking, Im like when is it gonna stop? I went to a reputable salon that I had gone to for eight years. I trusted them. I was told the Keratin Copolla Complex Straightening treatment was ALL NATURAL, and it would tame my unruly curls to become silky straight healhty hair. ISounds great, right? I am a high lit blonde, RIght after the first treatment my hair turned orange, then the hair started falling out, actually breaking off the ends. TI cryed, complained and the salon and the rep suggested it was health related, that perhaps I was sick. So I went to my doctor and had my blood screened for EVERYTHING, diabetes, lupus, displaysis absolutely everyhting, I AM 100% HEALTHY. These companies are trying to pass the blame to the consumer and it is disgusting

What I am finding is that the Reps are pushing these products AND the stylists / salons are jumping on the latest fad for day product without finding out the real facts! They are buying into everything Copolla tells them and the result for us consumers is devastating! Like I said I created this group on face book PLEASE join and post your story. Maybe just maybe we can make a difference! So far I have stopped women from getting this done, it is a start! Even if women swear by this product it is hazardous. ALL of The KERATIN STRAIGHTENER Products contain formaldehyde or aldehyde. The FDA does not regulate Beauty Products strongly. And worse when I asked Coppolla repeatedly for the MSDS sheet they will not release it. This is horrible and the salons and stylists should step up and not use this product! The process is very expensive which means a pretty hefty tip for a stylist, they need to stop being intoxicated by the $$$ and Stop using this stuff!

This is what my page starts off saying, see below....(look me up by email on face book taralynnhughes@yahoo.com and friend request me and i will give you the link for the BAN KERATIN GROUP! ( i have before and after pictures posted)

This is for the cause "Get Keratin Hair Straightening Treatments Banned". Please add your stories and descriptions of the Keratin Straightening Treatment Gone Wrong. Write to your local legislators about the need to BAN this horrible product from the shelves since it is a health hazard containing aldehyde and formaldehyde. The salons will tell you these products are All Natural because Keratin is a natural element found in hair BUT the keratin straightening treatments ARE NOT natural keratin, it contains hazardous chemicals like aldehyde and formaldehyde. This product can damage hair causing breakage and discoloration. The result is waiiting for months for hair to regrow.

BEFORE Keratin Hair Straightening Treatment, see posted pic at bottom LONG THICK HAIR which took me a long time to blowout straight, that is why the salon told me to get the "All Natural Copolla Keratin Hair Straightening Treatment" done. It was very expensive and I was told the result would be to tame my unruly curls with silky straight healthy hair. I got the Copolla Keratin Complex Straightening Treatment done at the salon I have gone to for 8 years and the result is devastating. The AFTER picture is on this Profile PiC, you can see orange color on the sides, horrible breakage, I actually lost about 4 inches of hair over 6 months time. It just wouldnt stop breaking. Pieces JUST broke off at the ends literally. It is just starting to get back to normal but is still not great. I am making it my mission to MOUTH OFF about this horrible product until IT IS BANNED for health hazards as well as damaging hair. Please pass this information along to your friends so it does not happen to anyone else! It is NOT worth it!

Thank you! (NO< WAIT>>>) *THANK YOU!*I got bloodwork also--a month before the reatment by coincidence and last week. I'm physically fine. I've spent sooo much money! Different products, nutrients, doctors, test! I got to a dermatologist on September 8th. i am gong to insist that the root of my hair from a brush pre-Keratin Treatment and post treatment., and then I am tempted to go to the news media.

I use Nexxus Emergencie and Frederic Fekkai shea butter deep restructuring conditioner on the hair, and Nioxin on the scalp. Saturday I go to a Medical Intuitive who is very very good. Hoping she can zero in on treatment. it has only been 6 weeks, but I lost 50% of my hair and I am sick to my stomach. not only is it breaking, but falling out at the roots! I am constantly brushing my the fallen hair off my arms.

The only place that I have found to post was Short hair keratin forum.

Good for you for stepping up to the plate and telling everyone. I tell every beauty counter sales clerk (especially the boutiques w/high end products), health food store worker, and anyone I have an opportunity to tell.

Going to go and check out your facebook!

Thanks for posting!!!

Oh, did your hair start regrowing? or, was the hair shaft permenently damaged?

I'm having a tough time naviating facebook, first time user. So, not sure where to post my story. Thanks for your assistance via email.

Saw your pix! yup... looks like what it did to my hair! I used to have very thick, silky sandy blonde hair. Problem? Hours of blow drying/flat ironing. NOw? I feel like I look like I did a few round of chemo.

So far, in 6 weeks, I have lost 50% of my hair, from the root... had CBC bloodwork, Thyroid bloodwork... used Phyto scalp treatment.... nioxin... Fekkai deep treatment... Pranic healing.... acupuncture... Biotin... L-lysene.... Bt D... Saw Palmetto herb... Cellfood... and this Saturday I have a session with a medical intuitive, like carolyn myss's work. I still have to get 6' cut... will not be able to do a touchup highlight for a good long time, so "sandy blonde" will go to dark roots.... and stil have an appt w/dermatologist. All in all? Over $1000.

In to the second week of fallout, I CALLED COPPOLA! they said that the hair strands would be thinner (understatement) but never heard of falling out. (THEY"RE KIDDING< RIGHT?) My thick course hair has become almost as thin as the hair on my arms. whispy thin.

Good luck to all who have experienced this horrible treatment, and hope that anyone considering it...

DONT DO IT!!!!!

Oh boy! You are all scaring me!

I have been losing hair for about 2 years and not only does my hair fall out, it has decreased in quality and recently I fried it using some bleaching products . I thought that the keratin treatment would do something FOR my hair loss problem not make it worse!

I did the keratin treatment 2 days ago. That's right...I haven't washed my hair yet. I'm so frightened now. I have lost about 50% of my hair from whatever the preexisting problem(s) are for me and now if I am going to lose hair even more and faster, I think I will just die!

I'm considering washing my hair tonight to maybe avoid the problems you are all having. What do you think? I'd rather have fried hair than no hair I guess.

:(

If I were you, I would be washin gmy hari while reading this reply.. not wasting a second!!!!

From what I've read, alot of chemical treatments, alot of chemicals to the scalp increases the DHT levels, which then weakens the hair shaft.

I cannot believve a hair stylist would even consider putting a straightener on your hair with hair loss and bleaching!

I have highlighted hair, with one inch roots. i will not get it highlighted for a long long time. The keratin treatment has weakened my hair from thick and coarse to thin and whipsy.

Wheat the Keratin treatment did, besdies causing my hair ot fall out, was make the strands very thin. I am using Nexxus Emergencie with great results, followed by Fekkai shae butter restructuring treatment, which i leave on over night, with nizon on the scalp, being careful not to put it on my hair, just the scalp..

When people ask me if they should get this treatment done, I reply, "take a good long look at your hair.... are you willing to have the possibility of losing it, rapidly, massively?"

i would wash my hair with a shampoo that has sulphates, which is supposed to help wash the process out.

Good luck!

Tricia JoElle

Keep posting with your results!!!

To read more horror stories, google shorthair keratin hair loss and keratin hair loss damage. Lots of horror stories.

God only knows why this product is on the market!

coppola themselves had told me that your hair strand thickness will thin, but never heard of hair loss....

uh huh... yeah, right... ok... whatever! Guess they don't google themselves. maybe a class action would get their attention?

There are alot of success stories, but, there are alot of horror stories. If I knew then what i know now? i'd had stuck to hours of blow drying and flat irons... instead of "hair nice a silky"... *(yeah, the wig I'll probably be buying soon!)

Good luck!
