Why Kirstie Alley Fell Off the Wagon

Posted on Apr 24, 2009 10:03 AM

The last time she was on our show, she came out wearing nothing but a bikini. Today, actress Kirstie Alley returns to the show to talk about falling off the weight loss wagon. During the hour, she addresses her weight issues and shares some of the new goals she's set for herself. Plus, she shares why she is no longer a spokesperson for Jenny Craig and how she feels about Valerie Bertinelli's incredible weight loss story. Then, Michael Herbranko might be the world's most famous yo-yo dieter. He's lost and gained an astonishing 3,000 pounds. Don't miss one of the most dramatic and traumatic weight loss stories we've ever heard.

This is the reason why I have chosen to have Gastric By-Pass Surgery, to help me stop yo yo dieting. I have only a few more testing to go through then I get to talk to the surgeon and I will have a date for the actual surgery. I understand the first year the weightloss will be rapid, and I will be going through a dumping syndrom. I am sort of looking forward to that, to teach myself that the food I love today I will no longer love a year from now. I also know that once I lose all the weight I want to lose I might gain some weight back, but at least I won't ever weigh over 300 lbs. again. I know I weigh over 200 lbs again. I would love to invite Oprah to follow me time from time on this journey I am about to under take.

I am more interested in what Kirstie Alley is going to do now in response to her falling off the so called wagon to improve her health not so much her weight.

I don't think it's as impotant as 'why' she fell off the wagon, just that she keep moving forward in a positive direction. We all fall off wagons. Wagons were made to be fallen off of.

*I once fell off the wagon, and was then trampled by a herd of horses. It was not a good time! :^0

Easy to figure that one out... She felt like she was starving all the time.

7. Physical hunger?... I don't think so...

Physical hunger? I dont think so.... emotional hunger... yes. What was she hungry for... really? We think that eating more food will fill up that void... it does not... as we put on the pounds again... at times all the weight lost back on and more. Sounds familiar to anyone? It does to me.

I'll be interested to watch this show, I had almost forgotten about Kirstie Alley. As someone who has always struggled with my weight (although not quite so much now ---- I've lost 80 pounds since becoming bioidentically hormonally balanced, but have a way to go) I am always interested in more insight to the problem. I am reading (rereading actually) a great little book by Geneen Roth, If You're Going To Eat At The Refrigerator, Pull Up A Chair, it's short little chapters to make you think why you overeat. I've recommended it to a bunch of friends. Ms. Roth has written a bunch of other books too, Feeding The Hungry Heart, and there are others, I first heard about them on the recommendation of a psychologist. Best wishes to all for a great weekend!

It sounds familiar to me. I thought my problem had to do with being home with four young children, only I really loved being home with four young children and they grew up and went to school. Over time, my weight kept going up no matter what what.

You cannot imagine my husband's skepticism when I told him that I thought I was obese because of physical hunger. Having lost weight, I'm now more credible. What do you think it does to people to restrict their food intake, day after day after day, to little boxes of prepackaged food? "Portion control" is another word for starvation: you are never satisfied! I lived like that for 30 plus years.

Kirstie, you have served as an example for me. I'll be very interested to watch the show.

It is okay to fall off the wagon and it is okay to sit down on the ground crying over the pain from falling off, but once the pain has gone and the tears have dried, then it is time to get back on, but that is when friends needs to gather with a hand extended to help you back up and hold you steady until you have proven to be firm enough to stand on your own; but friends should also be ready to catch you again should you fall again.

Lets get real here , who cares ! This is a show I will not watch . I am sick and tired of Oprahs obsession with
celebrity weight loss. There are thousands of people out there who have lost weight and kept it off and
we never see or hear from them . Diets don't work as Oprah very well knows . Getting rid of the scale and changing
our eating habits to be healthy does. Obesity is epedemic and its time people get back to basics , most people
want fast results with no effort and it just does not work that way , most people take better care of their cars and homes than
they do their bodies . We all have the same number of hours in a day and the God given freedom to choose what we do
with them .

Lets see real people who have been successful so that others can be inspired and I don't mean people who have had
gastric surgery !

If woman would stop defining themsevles by the number on a scale and start to focus on having a healthy body
they would be empowered to change. Oprah has the power to use her show to revolutionize the way we look at our
bodies and empower woman to stop dieting and start living. Being overweight is not healthy period!

Dear dietsdont, Oprah is just being supportive for Kristy Alley, to try to help her back up and back onto the the wagon. I believe not only is this to help Kristy Alley, but to also help Oprah and others who have fallen off the wagon and went back into their bad eating habits. You don't have to watch, nobody does.

I for one will be watching, and I have to watch the numbers. I am morbidly obese and I am a diabetic, with high blood pressure and high Cholesterol. I am getting ready to have gastric by-pass surgery.

The whole premise of "fell of the wagon" is that being obese is like being a drug addict or an alcohoic -- except that everyone needs food in order to live! There are only about 1,000 people registered on the National Weight Control Registry who have lost 30 pounds or more and kept it off for a year. Losing weight permanently is a rare event Personally, I think the defining trait of obese people is gullibility. You believe the nonsense that is presented as fact. It's not hard to lose weight. You just have to use common sense -- and "portion control", which meal replacements like Jenny Craig -- is the opposite of common sense. "Portion control" translates into constant feeling of starvation.

It would be nice if Oprah presented success stories of normal people from the National Weight Control Registry -- and not those people who exercise two hours per day, either!

I'm very interested in this show because I have considered Kirstie's story many, many times over the years. I bet she was a restrictive eater when she was thin, and she just gave out. That's what happened to me. I was thin for several years, but I was a restrictive eater. My body just rebelled. That is not "fall off the wagon." That is the body asserting itself that it will no longer starve. How many years of Jenny Craig foods can a person take?

It's hard to watch people suffer, yo yo dieting and putting themselves through that stress. I did that for many years and the ONLY solution to weight issues is to STOP dieting once and for all....

It's funny that no one ever talks about hunger.. when i learned to get back in touch with hunger and EAT when I was hungry,, eat what I wanted to eat and stop before I was full the weight came off. I had to deal with emotional eating but once I stopped dieting, I was free.

I dropped my pre-occupation wtih food, weight loss dieting and just started living!

I work with women every day as a weight loss coach on these principals every day. For me it was the answer and the SECRET to real and lasting weight loss....

EAT WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY,, ALWAYS... STOP RIGHT BEFORE YOU ARE FULL... CROWD OUT THE PROCESSED FOODS WITH REAL FOODS AND YOU WILL BE WELL ON YOUR WAY!

Love yourself,,, you are good enough and perfect today. take care.

Erin Postle.
