Dr. Roizen's Running for Stamina

Posted on Apr 1, 2009 8:54 PM

Hi, All. I started Dr. Roizen's plan to run 21 min/day three times a week. Beginners, that's me, alternate walking with running to keep heart rate to 80% of maximum for your age. Work up to running for the entire 21 minutes.

To calculate heart rate, start with "220" and subtract your age. Multiply the result by ".80". Mine is 132 beats per minute. Today, I jogged approximately three minutes for every minute I walked.

This is a stamina builder, and very good for feeling young.

Hi Worldstudy,

What do you mean jog three minutes for every minute walked?

Hi, Inthenow55.

It means that I jogged for three minutes to get my heart rate to about 132 and then walked for 1 minute to keep it in that range. Then I picked it up again and rested again, alternating for 21 minutes. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Worldstudy,

I just did a search on the Oprah site. Could you post a link to Dr. Roizen's information about his running theory. I could not find an article. I would like to read what he has to say.

Hi Worldstudy,

I had my first session today doing the alternating between running and walking. I have not checked my heart rate. When I run, I put the treadmill at 5.2 miles per hour, when I walk I put the treadmill at 3.2 miles per hour. I did well and kept the pace, the only alternation I did, since this was my first time was the jogging may have been less and the walking more between alternating, but not much different than the plan. I did good!

I am going to try programming the session into my treadmill, it has that capability, I recall it not allowing such frequent changes, I will find out and let you know.

Over the next week or so I may switch my days to do this, so that it lines up as the same day I do my Bowflex machine for weights.

21 Minutes, alternating between running and walking for me today!

I will be doing my sessions of this every M-W-F. I could not figure out how to program the session into my treadmill, so I used a preprogrammed one called cross training. It was close to what is recommended. Maybe by next time I will have my machine programmed.

I'm faithful to my 30 minute-a-day walking plan and I'm doing some regular exercise, but I've not been running. I'm trying to get back to three sessions of 21 minutes of strenuous execise per week, but I'm not there yet.

I've been out in my kayak, and that's really good exercise. In fact, I started that at the same time as I was doing strenous urban farming and ended with with sore joints, shoulder, hips and wrist. I'm usually pain free and like it that way, so I determined among other things that the kayaking is for off exercise days. The set-up and paddling time are quite a work-out in themselves. I would like to fill in the balance of the three times a week with running days. I'm going to start easy. It's easier to prevent injury than to heal from it.
