Work, Work, Work, Work

Posted on Feb 25, 2009 3:36 PM

I am working my tail off with a full time job (9-5) and three part time jobs (Pizza Delivery, Hotel Front Desk and Scuba Instruction). Most days of the week, I work 8 hours in the day followed by 6-8 hours in the evening. The part time jobs were part of my back up plan for a possible lay off which didn't happen. (not yet)

The action plan for 2009 couldn't have come at a better time for me. I went from looking at new cars, vacations and toys to focusing on reducing debt and preparing as outlined in the guide. I am very thankful and have done a complete 180 on my spending and have been rewarded with a significant increase in my FICO score (+150pts) from focusing on reducing credit card debt with the extra $$

Washing pots and pans til midnight a couple of nights a week at the Pizza shop and working overnight at a hotel front desk serve as a good deterrent for my future spending. Lesson learned and I hope by 2010, I'll be able to go back to just one job.

Good luck out there!

That is great!! you are to be commended for trying so hard... Who helps you? Do you have a family? I know my sisterinlaw worked two full time jobs for almost three years but it was me and my mother in law who helped with the kids and household. she was lucky she only lived a few houses away from us. She worked so much that she didn't have much time for anything else. If you are young go for it!! But if you are getting up in age I would suggest, smell the roses too before your health takes a turn for the worse. jenny

My girlfriend of 8 years helps me by having uniforms and meals ready since I am constantly on the go. The schedule gets a little crazy some times since I put work first and we have to plan around it. Even when taking a week of vacation, I still have my other jobs to do.

Our family doesn't include kids but instead mothers who live with us since they are older and only work part time. Not being around certainly puts a strain but we try to make the most of the short times we spend together and are all focused on the same goals.

I've been at this now for almost 3 months and plan on going down from 4 jobs to 3 jobs in June. No more teaching Scuba because people aren't signing up for classes.

I would like to go from 3 jobs down to 2 jobs in August when I have paid off my credit card debt. I don't yet which job I'll give up but hopefully I get to pick one instead of getting laid off.

Good luck out there!

June 09 update.

After 6 months of working like crazy, I decided to give up two jobs that placed the biggest strain on my family and wallet. Working overnight at the hotel was tough because of the schedule and working as a scuba instructor was barely a break even job because of the small classes and high costs.

So I am back to two jobs, day job and pizza delivery on Sunday's (and on call during the week). My plan is to pay $600-800 a month to my credit card which is essentially my car payment for a new car plus my part time income from delivering pizza. I am on track to reduce the last $5K of credit card debt by the end of the year if I can keep my other expenses low and not buy a new car.

It will be nice to start 2010 focusing on paying off student loans or mortgage without any silly credit cards.

I saw the new plan mentions saving instead of paying off debt but I plan to go "old school" through the end of 2009.

Nov 09 update

Good news is that I survived the last round of lay offs and the local office has closed. I'll continue to work home based with the occasional travel to our HQ office in TX. I

My Credit Card Debt is down to $2K and I am on track to pay it off by the end of the year. I still deliver Pizza on the weekends and remain very focused on that goal. I would really like to leave the pizza place and put this year behind me. I've made some adjustments to prevent future credit card debt like selling my boat and most of the expensive scuba gear. I took up rollerblading, bike riding and kayaking (all toys that have been sitting in my garage collecting dust)

I did buy a new car. Trade in on the old one was soon going to become necessary. The minivan was replaced with a hatchback. Gas savings are almost half at the pump and I went with the model that had a nice 10 year warranty instead of bells and whistles on a car that looked better.

Good luck out there. I know times are tough and lets hope everyone has a good support system to get throught it. I couldn't have done this alone.
