Losing weight can be hard, but it can be even more difficult doing it in front of millions of people. For the first time, Oprah talks to Star Jones about her 160-pound weight loss, her controversial surgery and The View. Then, Valerie Bertinelli took her struggle with weight public when she signed up to do it on television as a Jenny Craig spokeswoman. She reveals her new bikini body and how she's been able to keep the weight off. Plus, Marie Osmond shares her emotional story about her lifelong struggle with weight.

I've seen the cover of People magazine with Valerie Bertinelli on the cover. Kudos to her for losing the weight and looking wonderful at her age...BUT, that being said, I would hope Oprah will ask her about whether the photo on the cover of People was airbrushed/altered/enhanced in any way (as it appears to be). After the recent Kardashian photo which showed how she was slimmed down, smoothed down and "paled down" with airbrushing/camera magic, anything is possible. The body shown on the cover of People is so smooth, tight and perfect, it seems unlikely that someone who is 48 years old could lose 40+ pounds and still be able to appear completely flawless. It really doesn't do the average woman any good at all to view celebrities extolling the virtues of their weight loss/fitness regimen if we can't see the actual, real, untouched results. Again, she looks absolutely fabulous, but almost porcelain-like perfect.

I'm sick and tired of the Oprah show doing the "boo hoo hoo, poor me. I'm a celebrity" routine. Every Friday live show includes the crying and wimpering of how life is so difficult being a celebrity. Every other show topic is about a celebrity, and the pain and misery that they endure.
I don't care. You chose this life. This is nothing new as far as being a celebrity and the woes that are attached. Many people are jobless, about to (or already are) homeless with forclosed properties, ill with no healthcare, and we are supposed to feel sorry for the celebrities out there. Bleh.

I hear ya peepsman, but I will watch because I like these ladies.
Seriously, I cut back on my food intake because of the economy, and I'm as skinny as I want to be. I don't understand it because I see hungry people all over the place. If only we could find a balance here.

Mar 29, 2009 10:46 AM | What ever happened to Winonna? We watched her on Oprah. We cared, we rooted her on. She never even cared enough to come back and tell us what happened. Nope. She just popped up in an Alli commercial touting she was putting herself back on her list. A line they clearly stole from the Oprah show.

Mar 29, 2009 10:04 PM | I wonder if Star Jones will finally tell the truth about undergoing gastric bypass surgery? According the hosts on The View, that was one of the reasons she was eventually let go. The audience no longer believed that she lost weight with only dieting and pilates and therefore could no longer connect with her.

Mar 30, 2009 11:11 AM | Yes, no one believed her and she thought people were idiots. I don't know why she is even on the show. Surely they could have found someone else that has lost weight publicly, not a liar and not a celeb in my eyes. I thought she went away, now she's back ???

Re: Losing Weight in the Public Eye with Star Jones, Valerie Bertinelli and Marie Osmond
Mar 30, 2009 12:46 PM | I hope Oprah asks these celebrities about plastic surgery after the weight loss. I've lost over 100lbs. by dieting and exercising. I have kept it off for over a year. I still have more weight to lose. I am very grateful for the weight I have lost but I have sagging skin all over. It is the part of the weight loss process that people don't talk about. When I see the bikini shot of Valerie, I can't help but wonder how she doesn't have any stretch marks, no sagging skin....Oprah please address this........Thanks

Mar 30, 2009 3:41 PM | i too have seen the People Magazine cover and my first reaction to it was how can a 49 year-old woman lose 50 pounds and have no sagging skin? Being 57 and having lost over 70 lbs myself, I find it hard to believe that your skin can be that taut. I think all of these women look great but how can their bodies not possibly show the ravages of age and obesity that all of us who have gained and lost major amounts of weight have even when we exercise. These pictures have to be enhanced!

Re: Losing Weight in the Public Eye with Star Jones, Valerie Bertinelli and Marie Osmond
Mar 30, 2009 5:42 PM | Marie Osmond is my inspiration. I watched her on Dancing with the stars and I saw myself gaining weight. I got divorced after 33 years and found the most wonderful guy in the world. Well he is an excellent cook and I saw myself within the last 4 years gain over 50 pounds. I watched diet comercials but never believed in it or else it was to good to be real. Well watching Marie with the last year from dancing with the stars and now I can't believe how wonderful she looked. Anyone could of said to me anything to me but I wouldn't listen. Well one month ago when I saw Marie losing 45 pounds I said if she can do it I can. Well I got the food and have been on it for one month I have already lost 14 pounds. I feel great and I feel like life is so wonderful now. She is my inspirational and I would love to thank her for what she did to me in my life. I am keeping up with it and it has been wonderful. I know I will continue and won't be a quiter. Thanks

Mar 30, 2009 6:05 PM | I agree with you, redsox28. I don't get the obsession with celebrities. I don't believe they should be hounded or berated for their size, esp the women. This happens to everyday women, too.. Women should not be judged by their weight. If these celebrities want to do something positive they should stand up to the idea that a woman should be a size 2. The idea that a size 6 is the new 14 is nothing short of insanity. Only 5% of the population can be healthy below a size 6. I personally avoid any shows that feature celebrities. Most are into self promotion & there are far more serious issues these days. I have had money & i have been without it. Having it was definitely better. It may not buy happiness, but, all things being equal, good & bad things happen to both groups. The money makes it easier to deal with. For example, if you lose close family member and have the money, you can take some time to deal with it. In corporate America, you have 3 measley days to deal with it and get back to work. If you have some vacation time, you may use some of that but it can threaten your job because you inconvenience the company. If you have no vacation days, you will be docked & most families are barely making it at full slary as it is. Celebrity whining makes people resentful.

I lost 130 lbs it took all of 2008 to do it. What makes it really hard is I have a physical disability. That's how I gained the weight in the first place. I was injured severally and I was in rehabilitation for over 18 months. I had more fun gaining the weight than loosing the weight but I really fell so much better physically. I really just don't know why some people can eat all the time and some people can't. My big brother eats like a hog anything all the time he is as thin as a pole if I look at a cake commerical I gain weight. I just think it is so unfair.
