Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

I'm a huge Steven Covey fan and this is his simple yet profound piece of advice. I hope to practice it here on the boards as in the rest of my life. Imagine what we could accomplish with this simple guide. :)

Yes, to understand is something we can really work on and get better in it, more understanding. By studying and knowing Oneself - and by that the common experience of being human. While working on "being understood" is tough... see all the great , how misunderstood they were by most of us. Even Eckhart, not to mention Jesus...

One can not guaranty for how his/her words are perceived. But - happy ending - Truth has transmitive power and reaches sooner or later...

Maybe if we spend twice as much time on seek first to understand as we do on being understood, we will make better progress. After all, we have two ears and one mouth - we should use them in that proportion, right?

I like what you say about truth....

4. To seek first to understand is just one kernel of wisdom in the Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi.

WIkipedia:

The Prayer of Saint Francis is a Christian prayer. It is attributed to the 13th-century saint Francis of Assisi, although the prayer in its present form cannot be traced back further than 1912, when it was printed in France in French, in a small spiritual magazine called La Clochette (The Little Bell) as an anonymous prayer, as demonstrated by Dr Christian Renoux in 2001 (Cf. Christian Renoux, La prière pour la paix attribuée à saint François, une énigme à résoudre, Paris, Editions franciscaines, Paris, 2001).

The prayer has been known in the United States since 1936 and Cardinal Francis Spellman and the Senator Hawkes distributed millions of copies of the prayer during and just after World War II (Cf. C. Renoux, op. cit., p. 92-95). Many different versions of the prayer exist. The most popular is this following one :

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;where there is hatred, let me sow love;where there is injury, pardon;where there is doubt, faith;where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light;and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;to be understood, as to understand;to be loved, as to love;for it is in giving that we receive,it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.

hi jdc,...

It is a known fact that we percieve 95%+ of our information through our vision/sight.

and also that we it is believe have not 2 but a third eye.....

maybe as you wrote if we use them in proportion....

if we learn how to use all three, we can then

gain understanding about this inner kingdom too.

A great Saint once told me Understanding is the only thing we take with us leaving time.....

all else is left on this earth, including our body,..

.and to be understood,.....leave it be,... Just like the tree ,bearing it's fruits

for others ,....not for self ,.....to eat..

light love and peace'

Here's what just caught my 'eye' in your thread...

"Seek first to understand, then to be understood in a New Earth."

Is that like find the inner knower first then express it through you in your life's purpose.

Where the two shall meet,

as above so below.
