Jeans - Fit

Posted on Jan 7, 2008 12:40 PM

While listening to and reading the information on what to look for in jeans something very glaring stands out - if you are under 5'4" you should stay away from boot leg jeans and go with a straight leg. If you are over 5'4" then it is ok to go with the boot leg. What should you do if you are 5'4"? That's the problem I find even in regular pants - the regulars are for those over 5'4" and the petites are for those under 5'4". But there is nothing for those of us at 5'4"! WHY? I also have a very defined waist and if I wear jeams just "slightly below waist" then they make my hips look huge and most of the time the waist band sticks out. If I go to the stretch jeans, which is all I can find anymore, then I end up having wear them unzipped and pull them over and pin them because they stretch out so badly. I just bought a pair of Jag jeans - the sales woman practically guaranteed they would fit perfectly wearing after wearing. I constantly feel like the jeans are falling off and am pulling them up. Now I have to pull the waist over and pin them. I can't afford to pay a premium price for jeans then pay another premium price for alterations. I don't trust buying anything like clothes on line or from a catalog as I need to try everything on first so I don't waste money since the S/H charges are nonrefundable.

Hi. I know how you feel. I'm 5'4" tall and have difficulty finding jeans. They either do not fit properly in size 16 petite or they are too tight in size 14 petite. Sometimes, I can find size 15 but never in petites and it also depends on the price.

As noted in my earlier post, I am 5'4" and weigh 115#. I have been out shopping for jeans and pants in general and just can not find anything that fits. in order to get the waist to fit (that is if there is a waist on the pants), then most of the time the pants/jeans do not fit in the hips. In order to fit in the hips, then the waist is huge. I refuse to spend hundreds of dollars for jeans/pants as I don't have that kind of money. Just for fun, I did try on some jeans over the $100 dollar price tag and none of them fit either. I truly believe all jeans are made for those with no waist line and are straight up and down. I don't like the feeling of the pants creeping down. One pair of jeans I tried on, was a size 2 - I had the jeans buttoned and zipped and I could take them off without any problems without unzipping or unbottoning them! I never used to have this much trouble! I have a pair of faded jeans - no stretch (and that is another thing I don't like about jeans - everything now has spandex in them!) and they fit me pretty good. They don't look the best, but I try to take good care of them as I know they will have to last a long time. I don't want "mommy" jeans but I don't want jeans that are made for teenagers! I know Stacy London will say get them altered. Why should I spend a fortune to buy jeans/pants then pay more just to have them altered? I am so frustrated with clothing now. I am still wearing what I wore years ago. I might be out of style but at least I don't feel uncomfortable. I do have one pair of jeans that hits below the waist or as the ticket on it said "just below the waist". They also have spandex. I can only wear them one time then I have to wash them in hot water and dry them on high heat in the dryer, then iron them. I only wear them as a last resort and am constantly pulling them up as I feel they are coming down. Shopping is something I used to love to do - now I hate it!
Sorry, I just had to rant. Just so frustrated!!!

Okay you guys, I feel bad for your situation almost as bad as I do my own. So can anyone help with this?! I am 5' 7 and not in too bad shape. I'm 42, just had a second C-section last year (so you know there is a protruding "lump" down there that will never go away). I exercise on my lunch hour but I suffer from FAS (flat ass sydrome). Every pair of jeans I buy, appropriate size or not, there it is---bags under my butt. If I try on a smaller size jean, I can't zip them but the hiny fits. If I try my correct size, I can fit pillows down there. The stretchy pants? fit okay if I want a muffin top. Since I have no rear, my hips won't keep my pants up-belt or no belt. If I cinch the belt tighter, my sides pop over the jeans. Don't want mommy jeans they make my belly pooch out. This is a large problem. The low rise? joke city. Stacy would bang her head against the wall with me and like you guys, who can afford to buy jeans and then go get them altered? Especially with 2 small kids under 4 to make things challenging.

I just want to say I have a problem also with the jeans fit. I must have tried on 30 pair in the last week. There are only so many styles! When I find jeans that work.. which is rare, I never put them in the dryer. I am 5'3", 54 yrs old. Petite is always too short in the leg so I guess I have long legs for my height. I am buxom to say the least (36DD and oooozing (should have been there for Oprah's bra show) short waisted and have a very small tush. I look like a WOMAN coming toward you and a MAN going away! Ha haaa. To the person who can't find anything but stretch jeans.. try western wear shops. To the people who have tiny waistes and CAN find jeans that fit otherwise, have them tailored it's definitely worth it you lucky ducklings. :>

Thank goodness I'm not the only one that feels this way. If I ever come across any brand that is decent I will let you know.

OMG, Aren't you just sick of SPANDEX??? I hate spandex in jeans! I can't ever find jeans without it any more. Please fashion people, stop with the spandex. I am 5'5 and all the jeans with spandex seem to pull down on me too, so it's not your height. I just keep wearing my Tommy's and Levis from a few years back before everything became stretchable. You know, if they fit, why do you need stretchable? I don't know what area you are from, but, a good pair of fitting jeans is the Wrangler jeans that are sold at the Tractor Supply stores. I love Tommy because they are cut a little larger and since I am 55 and a belly that refuses to stay flat anymore, his jeans just fit me and are comfortable. Or were, I haven't purchased any in a few years. But, I did try on the Wranglers at the Tractor Supply store and was really happy with them. They are cut a little slim, so you might have to go up a size, or if you like them very fitted and a little tight, they will be just right. I guess they are made for cowboys and cowgirls, lol!
