STATEMENT FROM OPRAH WINFREY

Posted on Sep 5, 2008 10:46 AM

“The item in today’s Drudge Report is categorically untrue. There has been absolutely no discussion about having Sarah Palin on my show. At the beginning of this presidential campaign when I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not to use my show as a platform for any of the candidates. I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over.” – Oprah Winfrey, September 5, 2008

O,

I am so happy that your vote counts as much as the one I will cast. My mother, sisters, and grandmother have all cancelled their subscriptions to your magazine, and vow never to watch your show. You liberal bias has never been more clear. Thank you O for representing nothing but your own personal interest.

In response to so many comments that questions why so many people who are disappointed in Oprah are tuning into her show and going on to her website and that we must be a hypocritical Republican.

I am one of those that have decided to tune her out and I have never visited her website until I learned of her response on the news. Like so many others, I hated the fact that I had to "Become a Member" in order to weigh in on the matter but I decided that I would use Oprah's format like she has used so many others.

I might add that Oprah has done many wonderful things and that can't be denied but I find that in the past year that she can't get enough of herself.

I think it's appaling that she thinks her viewers are so stupid to fall for this - the show was used as a platform the minute Obama came on. I am so tired of celebrites thinking that they can sway how we think/vote - what possibly gives them this right. They are to entertain us and can use their shows to inform us, but should be both sides/well rounded. We want Sarah Palin on to hear about her, from her words - not what bloggers say about her and the media has portrayed as truths. Just the same as we would have wanted to hear Obama if she had never had him on her show - they are interesting because they are new and so different from regular Washington politicians. Give us enough faith Oprah that we can make our own decision - if Obama is that great, he will survive having Palin on your show-- or do you think you have so much power that you can actually cause someone to win a Presidential election just by having them on your show! Give me a break!

No, Wanda, this it not a "spanking."

However, you bring up a good point that points to one of the reasons people are disappointed in Oprah: her disingenuous statement.

I remember feeling crushed by Oprah's attack, quite frankly, more than a spanking, of James Frey, after making the determination that he had fabricated or manipulated his own truth in A Million Little Pieces. Her 2nd interview with him was more like a public crucifixion than a spanking.

Now, Oprah would have her viewers believe that the enlightened and contemporary staff at Harpo has NEVER spoken about having the first woman on a Presidential ticket (in more than 20 years) on her show. Who's fabricating and manipulating now?

No public lynching or crucifixion here.....not even a spanking. We've just seen the light.

Kudos Oprah... This is her show and she has the right to set the standard... for all of those who felt that she has personally betrayed you, get your own show and interview who you want and when... Maybe you never really understood her message to begin with...

Peace & Blessings

Good point. I'm just amazed by how emotional people are about this election. So emotional that all sense of reason and logic have gone out the door. I became a member of this community just a few days ago because I wanted to see what all the hoopla was about. I've tried to stay out of the gutter and NOT resort to insulting any one or calling anyone names. That doesn't serve any purpose and is absolutely non-value added to any productive discussion.

Back to your posting....I said it yesterday and I'll say it again McCain used the old "Rope a Dope" tactic when he chose Sarah. She'll be nothing more than a "token" political figure if they take the Whitehouse. Also, I find it interesting that McCain isn't letting her answer questions. Does that reveal a lack of confidence in her? She's made several appearances since the RNC, but she has a script she has to stick to. What's that all about? Since Biden was chosen, he's been campaigning on his on his own. With Sarah's experience and intelligence, shouldn't she be capable of campaigning on her own as well? An NPR political analyst mentioned yesterday that the McCain camp has brought in a team of experts to "coach" Sarah on the issues. She's also been given "briefing" papers to bring her up to speed on the issues and McCain's position on them. Lastly, NPR reported that the McCain camp was upset with Sarah because she went to a church and said the war in Iraq is of God and that's it is God's will for our country....so for the time being they're keeping a tight lid on her. Some say Sarah is a "Maverick." I haven't seen the evidence to suggest this.

Lastly, for all the right wing Christians who say they love God & Country but are downright disrepectful, rude, and hateful to their fellow man or woman...all in name of Sarah Palin. God said "How can you say you love Me when you hate your brother?...Hypocrite!" The Christian Right should work on being the right Christian.

Good points finmomma,

I think that much of what Oprah has provided as a "mentor" or role model has been so valuable to so many. In my own little circle of influence, I have discovered that when you are a mentor the goal is for the mentee (is that a word???) to become a mentor. In other words, the student becomes the teacher. Maybe, just maybe, those who have learned from Oprah are now using what she has taught them to "mentor" her when she has remained stuck in her role. The challenge is on--The teacher could benefit from the great job she has done teaching the students...they are now asking her to move beyond her bias and become authentic to her her own goals.

In some respect, Oprah has done a very good job teaching.

Now we watch to see her how she does as a student.

I've previously commented on how poor a commercial and politcal judgement it was to not invite Governor Palin on your show. I won't pursue this point because you have over 5,000 comments on this issue to date. Things have moved on:

Now Senator Obama is saying in Virginia: "[hand in starts in pocket then moves towards face] but you know you can't...you-you know you can put..er...[covers his face]...lipstick on a pig...[long pause waiting for audience to cheer]...[takes his hand off his face]...it's still a pig! [looks around]." This isn't private off-the-cuff remark, this is a calculated electon campaign statement.

How dare you portray yourself as a champion for women!

I would NEVER support a campaign filled with such hatred towards successful women, even if the candidate happened to be of the same ethnic origin as me and the women were from a different ethnic group.

I CANNOT BELIEVE that you could allow this behavior to go unchallenged! Is it one rule for friends and another for the rest of us?

I thought you might be better than this. I am appalled at the double standards. I criticised the Clinton campaign when it went racist out of desperation in the primaries. I now criticise the Obama campaign when it gets sexist and bullying. Where are you?

Let me guess, if Senator Obama loses in November, you'll get him on the show and have a group weep about how "racist" Americans are, not to elect a man who cannot tolerate opposition from a mere woman. How progressive of you!

The attempt to imply in the press release that you only had Barack Obama on the show to promote his books is, well, less than credible. I'm thinking of your audience is not completely gullible and some people will switch channels. Are your ratings that good, even if your conscience isn't?

It is a shame Senator Obama is emerging as such a deeply flawed character, as well as his unfortunate associations with his pastor and former associates. I hope to see an African-American president of the USA, on merit. I thought it would be Senator Obama. Not any more, he is like the nasty spiteful schoolyard bully that likes to makes girls cry.

And your silence as a backer of Senator Obama on this issue is more eloquent than a press release.
