Oprah's Great American Haircut

Posted on Oct 19, 2007 11:19 AM

One hundred viewers, 100 makeovers—one hour of "shear" mania! Plus, two-time Oscar® winner Hilary Swank has waited months for this moment, and it's all in Oprah's hands.

I was kind of disappointed that Hillary Swank only cut off 8" of hair. A good part of what was cut was layered and was much shorter than 8". A few years ago two of my daughters cut off 12" and 10" to donate to Locks of Love and one is currently growing it out to donate again. It would have been nice if all of the haircuts on the show were for donations... not extensions like some of them got. That's another show. They did look great though. Everyone deserves a great haircut!

62. are there more "after" photos?

Has anyone found more after pictures? I loved the 1st haircut that came out, Jaime, but the after photo posted doesn't look near as good as what was on tv. I want a photo to take to my stylist. Thanks!

I really enjoyed the show. I think it is a great idea. However, Hillary Swank mislead (lied to) the audience about the growth of her hair. I have been involved in the beauty business for approximately 40 years and any hair stylist or medical doctor will tell you the maximum - I repeat maximum hair growth is 1/2 inch per month and that is super healthy hair. Vitamins WILL NOT make hair grow faster only healthier. Just think, if it really were true we would all have long hair and the hair extension business would not exist. There is no way Hillary Swank grew 9 inches of hair in six months (only reasonable to say 3 inches). It really makes me mad when celebrities cannot seem to tell the truth. They all seem to live in a fantasy world were they see themselves as superior to the average woman. Not trying to be hard on Hillary, but please people do not go out and buy or ingest vitamins to try and accelerate the growth of hair. Eat well, exercise - you all know the drill.

I WAS DISSAPPOINTED IN THESE MAKEOVERS. THEY ALL GOT THE SAME HAIR CUTS, PAGEBOYS, LONGER OR A LITTLE SHORTER, EXCEPT FOR THE ONES WITH EXTENSIONS, SOME JUST GOT A LITTLE COLOR OF LAYERS. THEY USUALLY HAVE SOME OF THE BEST.
I WOULD RATHER THEY HAD DONE FEWER WOMEN AND SPENT MORE TIME TO MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE.

OH PLEASE Hilary, screaming over one inch (10" OH NO 9", 9" with Oprah measuring 5 times) for a good cause when your hair grows like weeds. I was so disappointed in her attitude. The show needed to be about donating hair not hair styles.

I just wanted to say that I have donated my hair to Locks of Love in 2003 after the devastating loss of my uncle. I was just diagnosed with cancer at the age of 30 yrs old and I plan to, again, donate my hair just before my chemotherapy starts. I love that I can help someone else just by growing out my own hair. I am sorry I missed this episode but I do have a good outlook on my condition and know that I will get though this as many others will, too. Della Witcomb Parrish, Fl

Well, I still haven't done anything with my hair but I am going to make an appointment with my stylist for next week. :D

As for not knowing how you will look with a certain hairstyle, I have a suggestion. If you are computer-savvy or know someone who is, use Photoshop or a similar program to "try on" styles! I did that and it worked out pretty well...I discovered a couple of the styles I like would not look good on me - including a few from the show I thought looked cute. I found pictures online of hair styles I like, saved the pics on my computer, opened them in my photo software, turned the hair into a cutout and pasted it on a picture of me I already had saved on my computer. Of course the color and texture of the hair isn't always right, but at least it gives me a good idea. Plus, I can print the pictures and take them to my stylist.

I loved the haircuts and thought the ladies looked great.....my only complaint is that on so many of the hair makeovers I've seen on TV and in magazines, they always give the curly gals straight blowdried styles. They look chic and swingy, but let me tell you that it is not easy to achieve on your own. How about some hair styles that make use of natural curl? I was excited to see the light blondish red curly haired girl and she looked amazing afterward with her darker red hair - but again, it was blowdried until it was fairly straight. I was hoping to see a curly look!

I just have to say, I missed this show unfortunately, but I have donated my hair to Beautiful Lengths before ... and will do so again. My hair could be considered a 'crop'; instead of growing in ground it grows on my head! I let grow long enough, and then cut it and send it off. .If this is the only thing I can do to help--if its the only thing I can contribute to humanity -- then it's well worth it.

msrwo2729, I'm so glad to hear that your daugther was able to find a piece to put over the part of her head that shaved for her surgery. I too suffer from hair loss and was wondering if you could tell me more about where you took your daughter to get her hairpiece or what kind of piece they used. How did it stay even while she showered?? How expensive was it and what kind of maintenance did it require?? I'm looking for valuable resources regarding this area, but believe it or not it's hard to find reliable information. Every makeover show in the world focuses on haircuts for those fortunate enough to have a great healthy head of hair, but what about options for women with thinning hair. There are hundreds of thousands of women who suffer from this in the US and all over the world!! Thanks!

My heart is sad because there are never any makeovers for those of us with thin, fine hair. Oh what in the world are we to do? Sincerely, kathi

I agree that it was a shame to see all of the stylists straighten the hair as if curly hair was some kind of deformity, especially since Oprah has curly hair herself.
I'm a recent convert (at age 60!) to letting my curly hair curl. After 40+ years of blowing, stretching, rolling and ironing my hair, I read Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey, and got a Deva cut at a local salon. I've never been happier with my hair, and my husband loves it. It would be great to see Lorraine or another curly stylist on the Oprah show in the future.

Thank you for your comment about curly hair! There are curly girls out there who love their curls and do not want to straighten them. I too have read Curly Girl and now I drive an hour to get my hair Deva cut. It is the best cut ever! Lorraine and the Deva cutters would be a great show. There are also many other curly cutters out there i.e. Quidad. I have found a curly girl line that is incredible! Jessicurl is producing products that make my hair look and feel wonderful! It would also be great to see how Oprah's hair stylist does her curly hair. It looks great! Don't forget us curly girls!!!!
