to"fzz70": re: Marshall Field's and Macy's. Marshall Field's was a 150yr old icon in Chicago, and several more stores that they had expanded to around the country. A very classy store known for their phrase: "Give the lady what she wants." The flagship store was here in Chicago on State St. Many traditions of many years are associated with Marshall Field's for not only Chicagoans but tourists. Macy's (of New York) came along in Sept.'06 and bought out Marshall Field's. They also bought over 400 other local dept. stores throughout the country. Marshall Field's has actually had a few other owners since Marshall Field but none of them changed anything significantly. When Macy's took over, they became Macy's, which,as we found out, is a store far inferior to our beloved Marshall Field's. Hundreds of long time employees lost or were forced out of their jobs. So, long story long, tens of thousands of us in the Chicago area and all over the country have been boycotting this Macy's store since they opened....quite successfully. Their sales have been repeatedly down. We have had bi-annual protest rallies outside the flagship store since they opened, drawing hundreds and all the media. What is so extremely disappointing about Oprah and her sudden use of this trashy store is (besides that she is so above this place) is that she always used Marshall Field's...or used them alot. She is on one of her shows saying: "and thanks to Marshall Field's, the greatest store on earth", after they had provided a shopping experience for a segment, one of many. As Field's fans we were hoping Oprah would stick more true to her 'hometown', and show some loyalty to this lost (hopefully not forever) icon. Marshall Field's was more like Harrod's, in London, if you know them. Macy's is just trashy. I hope this has helped explain some of the dismay.
