HOARDERS Parts 1 and 2

Posted on Nov 16, 2007

I love Oprah but the producers clearly blew it on this one!!! Because this woman could afford to shop "every" day, instead of actually cleaning up her home, she deserved a brand new makeover!!!! There are thousands in our country who diligently clean up our homes, even the mold, we shop when necessary or when there is a little money left over to do so, but this show blew it!!! I pray that the $13,000 made from the rummage sale went to charity. Oprah, why would you clearly give (and your name is why the donations were made) to a person who may have needed some psych help but clearly did not deserve 100 people cleaning her home for 8 weeks, let alone a complete home and funriture overhaul. Had she been handicapped or ill, then that would be different, but clearly all she could do was cry instead of clean!! This woman needs to get a grip and spend her money on those who are less fortunate!!! Shame on the O show for providing so much to a family who clearly has "tons!"

Meleach - could not agree more. I just saw end of show and STILL haven't heard her say how ashamed she is that she has used all these goods and services and resources and how she intends to pay society back for HER problem! Please read my post called Hoarder has me angry.

Admittedly, it does seem awfully frivolous that this woman and her husband got a complete, free make-over for their home. My own family had issues from a major hurricane four years ago which did some major damage to the house's structure, and we are still dealing with some of the leftovers today. It would have been wonderful to have had someone step in and get everything better than it was before the hurricane swept through. That wasn't our reality, though. However, I got to thinking --- Marvin and Sharyn have grandchildren, and of course, it's not unusual for grandchildren come to visit. That house, was, in essence, a deathtrap, especially for children. I mean, the wife, Sharyn, literally had tons of stuff stacked everywhere. What if that junk toppled onto a child, or a child got buried playing in it and suffocated? Or what if a fire started in that house? Perhaps this intervention sponsored on Oprah's part saved a life, maybe more ---- you never know. I guess that's something to think about. I just pray Sharyn doesn't revert back to her old ways after all of the cleaning, fixing, restoring, and refurbishing.

I agree with you, they are obviously people of means to be able to buy all that stuff to begin with, even though they were 'on sale'. I am sure that there are many folks out there in the same predicament, and would gladly take the help of 100 people and two months of cleanup and remodel. But then, that was a great sound bite 'We removed 75 tons of trash from this house!!!!!!!!!' I hope also that the yard sale money went to a charity.

I felt the same way about the Kristy Alley kitchen remodel a few years ago, she couldn't have afforded to do that herself?

This woman very clearly needed major help. Oprah may very well have been the only hope her family had of getting her the help she needed. She refused to admit that she even had a problem until confronted. Since when is Oprah about only helping the financially needy. This poor woman was very needy. I don't know that she was lazy or a dirty housekeeper. The mold and rodent problem was buried under tons of purchases and I don't think she was aware of that until everything was removed. This was a touching story about another human being with a problem, and I teared up several times. I hope your level of compassion is more than what you expressed in your comments.

There is true mental illness, then there is pure selfishness. I don’t begrudge anyone getting the help they need, rich or poor, but I was truly shocked and disgusted by the lack of real gratitude from this pair. Even after the thousands of man hours it took to clean up that dump, and even knowing people got sick trying to help them, Sharyn and Marvin only focused on themselves. I can not even find words for the contempt I feel for that obnoxious, self-centered woman and the misery she has caused her family for 35 years. And her husband was just as bad. Marvin practically flipped Peter off over the paper shredding issue. Even at the end he could barely be more than cordial to Peter. For crying out loud, Peter obviously cared more than Sharyn and Marvin about that unholy health hazard of a house. If you could get past the shock of that foul dump and really listen to the words these people used and how they responded to the help given to them, it becomes very clear that they are not good people. Their children deserved better. When the crap starts building up again, and it will because these two showed they couldn’t give a hoot about anyone else, then those (adult) kids need to let go of their guilt and shame, realize they have done more than enough and stop letting their parents suck the life out of them. The producers tried to do something good with this show, but it was wasted on this self-absorbed pair.
