It's the story that has the media buzzing and people talking. A happily married couple who lives in a normal neighborhood in America are expecting their first child. But, there's a big twist…the husband, Thomas, is the one pregnant. Thomas is here with his wife for their first television interview. How is this possible? Find out as the couple shares with Oprah the details of their pasts, their relationship and their incredible pregnancy. Also, watch as our cameras capture Thomas's ultrasound and take us inside their home to see the plans for the family's nursery.

See what happened on the show!

Hi Harpobear,
I do not usually consider making responses to talk shows, because I realize their purpose is to excite and engage the viewers. But I was so insensed by this show, I could not resist. This show was not about a Pregnant Man, but a surgically altered woman who wants to be a man. I have always considered the Oprah Winfrey Show as being intellectually stimulating, informative, and at times entertaining. This show was disheartening. My wife and I were disgusted to even think that Oprah would not only interview this couple, but to actually try and make it appeal to public sentiment.
I'm sorry, but as a believer in God, His Word gives no latitude for people who want to make their own Truth. (Rom. 1:25-27) When a person of principle, resorts to such Circus sideshow antics, it causes them to misrepresent the Truth. Truth: Thomas is not a man - Tracy is still a woman. If that were not the case, then she would not have a uterus!! This was not entertaining, it was a pitiful plea for the promotion of a lie.
I would hope that in the future, Oprah will stay faithful to presenting shows of integrity, quality, and high moral values, which is what we need today. Please do not buy into the demeaning, degenerate, report anything rhetoric that false truth dictates. "If we believe in just anything, we will fall for everything".

Still believing in the Truth

I agree! I loved the story as it reflects on what may be my future. I took note rather than knit picking at whether Thomas should be defined as Female or Male.

Okay first off I have to say I have not read all of the posts on this topic nor did I watch the show so I apologize for any repeats of prior posts. I do have to say as a fellow Oregonian I am appalled by this, I feel as though this person has made a mockery of our state and people view us as crazies. I have lived in Oregon my whole life and it seems as though most times that someone from Oregon is on a nationally broadcast show they make fools of themselves and then it makes everyone else in America wonder about what exactly comes out of Oregon. With that being said, here is my opinon and yes that is all it is but I wonder exactly what this will do to the child? As a mother of 2 how do you explain to your child that 1) your father used to be female and still has female organs, and 2) that your father gave birth to you, I wouldn't even begin to figure out how to explain that to a child. And how does your child explain that to their friends or later on their life partner? Sometimes I think people only think of themselves and not how it will affect everyone else. I feel as though Thomas is being somewhat selfish as to have not thought about how this will affect the people involved other than himself. I am not a biased person and I have no problems with the way people live for the most part but when it comes to this I think this goes a little beyond the realm of what is considered normal or even close to normal. I did see where it was mentioned that someone didn't see the problem that lesbians will get artificially inseminated and have children but the difference is they are both lesbians they are both women and one is not trying to be both a man and a woman, they have their child growing up believing that they have 2 mothers not a mother and a father. Same with gay men, if they adopt a child or have a surrogate so that the baby has part of their genes they raise the child to have 2 fathers not a mother and a father. I just feel sorry for the child that they are bringing into this world, I feel as though as the child gets older they will be seeking out counseling for this. And please if you are from Oregon and you are going to embarrass our state just keep it to yourself!

Ok, great points....But what i think is bothering people, which bothered me is essentially not that Thomas is transgendered or whatever, but that he has ovaries and female parts so was always able ot have a child, as a woman. Also, that the show was marketed in sensationalism saying that it was a man having a baby when there really is no miracle. There would be a miracle if he was born w/o female parts(i.e. a traditional man) and had a baby. THerefore it is 1) sensationalism marketing to the public 2) that it is NOT a medical miracle. 3) and why is she cherry-picking, wanting to be a man but then wanting to have a baby? men don't want to be pregnant so if she was truly meant to be a man than why does she have that urge? 4) and how is the testosterone going to affect baby long-term? It is still somewhat in him And did anyone wonder when they spoke the the gynecologist and she was saying she never worried about being judged? How about she did it to get famous??? She didn't seem altruistic to me, i dunno. Like someone else said, show us a biological man pregnant and that's a story. This was not a story because she is BIOLOGICALLY FEMALE! I accept transgendered people, i don't really understand it fully and would love to know more but i have no problems with it. One more thing: when the doc said that Thomas has done alot of research etc, what research??? I don't know of much research on long-term testosterone effects on baby, social issues of a child who's dad gave birth to it, and other issues. WHAT RESEARCH??? When she said that i immediately thought she was a QUACK!

And also it is not confusion. It is the choice to transition. It comes to a point where you can not longer push your feeling a side as to what gender you should have been and physically taking the steps to transition.

I totally agree with you! My favourite point you made is that two lesbians having a kid is fine, but Thomas is trying to be a man and a woman. It's as though he wants the best of both worlds. I really don't get why Thomas insisted on getting pregnant instead of the woman,,,

And by the way, i feel really sad for you that you think ppl are judging ppl like you from Oregon. I really doubt that. At least it didn't even enter my mind to think all of you are weird or crazy at all. So please don't feel that ok? They are weird. i just don't feel like going on Oprah, doing interviews etc is going to help this poor child when it's in school. I mean, be open about it but when media comes knocking they should say they don't want to put thier child in the spotlight and media before it is even born. They don't need to explain themselves. I dunno....i'm just thinking of the kid,,, as a mom myself,

The transition process goes in steps. In this case what I got from Thomas was that He wanted to bare child therefore he made the choice not to have the bottom surgery. He may be planning to the bottom surgery after the baby or even never at all. It is not mandatory to have both the bottom and the top surgeries done. I still dont understand the legal marriage. He is not considered a MALE.In most states you are required to have the bottom surgery before you can be classified as Male.

Thank you Oprah for following this story. It has yet to air in Australia but I swear on a stack of (Insert book names here) I am taking a day off work to watch it when its announced.
It may be one of the most significant shows You will have done. It has once again shown delicate workings of the transgender community and how hard society can be.
There is most certainly enough socialogical, physiological and psychological pressure to deal with in changing ones Gender in the firt place, but to give that up, even for a few months, Thomas has shown one thing that I believe to the most important of all in this story...."True Love".
He has put his entire life on hold. His gender identity and dreams have become secondary to the sharing of a human life with his life partner. Together they will make a baby. And she will be the most loved child because of her history. How many fathers would do what Thomas has done even if they could? I wish I could have found a guy that obliging and nice. (Sorry Thomas I'm already married and so are you:-) I can't bear children so we have cats, lots and lots of cats, my guy will do the dishes but thats about it.
Gender Disphoria is one of the hardest taboo's to deal with in society. Not only have you outed yourself to the world You have done it for the woman you love to make the Family you deserve. I would give you a million kudo's and wish your family the best of health and a great frture for your all.

Love Lisa Lush.

I'm not often home to watch Oprah but when I am home I so look forward to it. Today I chose not to watch. I found just idea repulsive on all counts. So I chose not to watch.

I've read about 15 pages of messages, and the general consensus is that this person (Thomas) is what? A man? A woman? A transgendered man? A lesbian? A freak? Unforunately, he/she comes off as freak.

Having said that, he/she has also outraged every segment of society. Men, women, gays, lesbians, the transgendered. All of whom have their own lives to live in any way they chose, without judgement from me.

Come on Thomas.........if you want to be a man......then stand up and be a man! Men don't get pregnant. Simple.

I just found the whole thing repulsive, and think Thomas needs to get back to serious counselling, before this baby gets so messed up he/she won't have any chance of living any sort of normal life.

As for Oprah choosing to air this episode, I suppose it is her choice. And her choice to also suffer the consequences or backlash. Personally I think it was a bad choice. Especially right on top of the wonderful work she is doing with her Webcast. It sort of makes her look kind of messed up too, doesn't it.

Still, all round it leaves a bad taste. Yuck.

This is where I have a problem as well...the way that the show was advertised! When I saw the preview of what the show was about, I had to do a double take! Then I of course like many of you put two and two together and knew he was obviously tecnically a woman. But I still watched it like many of you all did, and don't act like none of you never watched Jerry or Maury! lol There are shows that people watch for entertainment value...and then there was this show that was obviously advertised in a way to get people curious and to tune in. And im the first to say I was curious...and so were alot of other people! And to be quite honest I enjoy when Oprah throws in a little shock value every once in awhile...the giving and the spiritual quests and all that is wonderful, but sometimes I get on spiritual overload and need a little something else. Yeah it was all a little weird, and to see someone who very much looked like a man pregnant did kinda make my skin crawl..but Oprah always has a reason behind the shows that she does, and im sure after getting a wind of how upset people are she will give explanation to her reasoning behind it. Honestly I fear for the safety of this couple and their unborn child, and maybe just maybe being that they were on the Oprah show she may have opened that safety net for them..I think that may be her reasoning behind the show. Someone else could of had the couple on their show (Jerry) and really made a mockery of them..I believe Oprah did the show with class and respect and did not pass judgement upon them, just wish she would of advertised it differently, I still would of watched. As far as their book...everyone advertises their book on Oprah...doesnt mean you have to buy it. I wont be...nothing much to it...but I really think this should be a learning experience for people who decide to have these sex changes...if you have a desire to have a child...you might want to reconsider! Carrying a child is not a physical need as I believe he described it on the show. It's a desire that most woman naturally have, we are programmed that way, so him changing his physical features did not take away that natural programming. Now this poor child is probably going to be teased like crazy in school, and will probably be very confused when it's all explained to her. Only time will tell. Oprah I still love Ya Girl!!!!

Today's show was, needless to say, Ridiculous!! I watch Oprah almost everyday and it sickend me to think that she would acknowledge this Woman as a Man. I don't apologize for stating my feelings, but this is an abomination!!! There is no naturally borned man alive that can carry a child. And for Oprah to acknowledge this, even for "ratings" sake, is a new "low" on the the humanity scale. I'm wondering what she'll do next to keep her ratings!! This is blasphemous and horrible. This Woman made a Choice to live as a man. Obviously, she is still confused because she kept her female organs and genitalia!! What a mess. To me, this makes a mockery of my Christian faith. I am appauled!!

Exactly....well said. She and her studio were very deceptive when marketing the show cuz they knew that the real story was not that interesting. I watched it but wasn't paying much attention as i was writing on this message board and doing other things on the computer, it was really REALLY not newsworthy. UGH. I LOVE Oprah, my dad says to me all the time(mockingly) that she's my hero and i say "yup"! Cuz she is! This show was deceptive and dumb. Someone said she should have focused more human aspects of it like how does it affect the family, community etc rather than listening to their ho-hum story. All lesbians should be outraged, especially those who have had a baby from one of the partners cuz that REALLY what this show was. They should've all called in and told their story. So because he calls himself Thomas, considers himself a man cuz he had some surgery (which i respect, and more power to him). The very fact that he still had ovaries meant that he hadn't fully transitioned yet and was still, really, just a lesbian. Who cares? Oprah, why did you do this story? I give you the benefit of the doubt but honestly, you should've held off on this kind of story until you found someone who was either biologically male or fully transitioned into male wiht no uterus etc...ya know? Gosh! Enough ranting, i'm going to bed.

The level of judgment and hostility people complain about on this site is nothing compared to what this child will encounter in his/her life in the so called "real world." It is for this reason that I restate my concern and opinion that this should have remained a private family matter. Why they exposed this on national/international television so it can follow this child around for life is beyond me. And life for them will not be a cake walk either after this now that the story is out. You have some hateful people out there. Again, we need to pray for them.
