Dr. Oz Investigates Night Terrors

Posted on Mar 28, 2008 3:18 PM

It's almost impossible to believe unless you see it for yourself. Using incredible videos of people who are actually fast asleep, Dr. Oz investigates night terrors and shows us what happens—the downright disturbing, bizarre and even dangerous. Guests who are afraid to go to bed because of what happens to them almost every night share their stories. Also, an extreme insomniac who has been wide awake for five straight days shares her video diary. Then, one of our producers has a candid confession; and, a question only one woman had the courage to ask Dr. Oz.

See what happened on the Show!

Wow. At least two of those women could have been me. For years off and on I have woken up thinking something is coming down from the ceiling or that there were bugs on the wall. I wake up terrified and heart pounding, then I simply drop off back to sleep. My husband was a light sleeper and tossed and turned. Nice to know I can now attribute some of my night terrors to him :)

Excuse me, I don't understand why in the world you would be so happy to recommend the surgery you had after all the complications you had. And the fact that you're sweating again. It doesn't make sense to me.

Sorry, but it sounds like you need to be taking your baby to the doctor.

Briefly, this is my first use of a message board. My name is Pat.
Watching the woman try desperate for sleep I have to share a natural product by Bach Flower Essences.
For a sleep aid, Back Rescue Sleep. For anxiety, Bach Rescue Remedy. Please, go to the Bach
Flower web site and I assure you that you will be helped with any emotional stress you are experiencing.
My in laws from England say this is a staple in their homes and now I understand why. Not sure what is
next, but I will be happy to begin a dialogue if there are questions.
I have no monetary gains from this. I only want to help and, again, it works w/o chemicals.

Thanks so much for doing a show on sleep issues! I have been suffering from extreme insomnia for 15 years and can't believe someone else has had 5 consecutive sleepless nights. No one believes me! I have tried everything. Regular routines, OTC, diet and excercise, no caffeine, no smoking, no alcohol, teas, tryptophane, melatonin, Ambian, therapy, sleep studies, etc. For 15 years...nothing! It's great to know I'm not alone. I finally found a Doctor who was able to help. Thank you Ophrah!!!

The message I just sent has an error.........Bach Rescue Sleep.......NOT (Back Rescue Sleep)
I would like to add that these products are usually under $20, many large groceries sell them in their health food section. I would like to hear from other women who have had success with the Bach products. Pat

So tell me Dr. Oz, what should I do about the night terrors I suffer from. I dream about this Doctor who performed these horrible experiments on live puppies and baboons at Columbia University. They were horrible experiments that caused pain and suffering to innocent, selfless , loving puppies! Then I go on to dream that this non-human person becomes a doctor that everyone including the biggest animal lover in the world, Oprah worships. Then I wake up and realize this wasn't a dream or a nightmare, it was reality. Oh my goodness, I then realize that person is you and my night terrors subside because I discover who the monster is! Hopefully everyone else will catch on and stop the following and see who you really are!

Can you tell me how you know that it is Dr. Oz doing these things? Or are you talking about doctors in general? Isn't it usually scientists who do those things? I'm a big animal lover too. But, I also have lots of illnesses and want the docs to know how to treat me. Is there a website for the info you are giving?

I hope what I have to say can help millions of people with night terrors to get well that traditional medicine will not fix. My son kept having night terrors for 4 years. I was so scared I thought he was getting molested that I even made him talk to the school counselor to see if he would open up to them. Fast forward I took him to a naturalpath doctor who has a biomeridian machine that tells levels of liver function, kidney, pancreas etc. Its a machine that you hold a metal like rod and they measure different levels of your body with points on your hands and feet. When it got to his pancreas and his kidney the levels were low. This brilliant doctor said it indicates that his blood sugar drops drastically and she told me he needs a better diet with more protein. She suggested a high protein shake before bed and one in the morning. I have done this and from the very first time and THANK JESUS he has not had one since after suffering this for four years a simple change that a medical doctor wouldn't even put two and two together. I know Dr. OZ you are open to more than western medicine. This worked a miracle and is so simple for people to do. I hope people will give this a try. I had suffered from night terrors myself as a child and some people write it off as hereditary and it's not.

Hi Faith, Do a google search on Columbia University animal experiments and read all about it for yourself. I am on many rescue sites for animals and have been made aware of this through my rescue contacts. I just wonder if oprah knows these things about who she supports? Please let me know if you read the sight?

Ok, I see, it's going to take me awhile to read through all of this. It's something I am interested in. I will read through some of this and I'll let you know how I feel about it. It will take awhile. I'll reply to you but it will be later tonight or tomorrow.

ATTENTION OPRAH'S PRODUCER, BRAD!

Hi, Brad, thank you for sharing your sweating issue! I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM! However, you should feel better because I'm worse. My pits would have definitely been drenched too! (I know, that's gross...)

I noticed that Oprah and Dr. Oz tried to convince you that it's not a big deal, but you and I know IT IS! It affects every aspect of our lives. I can't hold my husband's or my child's hand for very long because they, of course, do not like holding a wet sponge. I had to put a cover on my steering wheel so it doesn't slip out of my hands. The list goes on and on... I noticed that there is a direct correlation between my hands and feet. If my feet are sweaty in socks or shoes, I take them off and my hands will dry up which makes me the "sandal queen". However, it doesn't work in hot weather or when I know I'm going to have to shake someone's hand! I don't know if you have that problem or not.

Just to let you know, I have been online and found that there are lots of people with this problem. People that have this condition as extreme as us have tried all the options and none work. I personally have tried everything including medication and have not been successful. I do have a thyroid problem like Dr. Oz said, but it is normal now that I take medication for it. And I still sweat. I have decided that surgery is the only option. However, I am scared to do it!

Basically, the surgery involves poking a hole through the chest wall and clamping the nerve responsible for making us miserable. I spoke with the staff at a doctor in Los Angeles who performs these procedures. Thanks to you, I am going to get the ball rolling again. When I informed my husband he sighed and said, "There goes our backyard remodel..."

So I just wanted to let you know that YOU'RE NOT ALONE! Maybe we could do the surgery together!

Sincerely,
Kris

I use to have about three night terrors two times a week until I started taking Melatonin. Since taking Melatonin for the past 5 years, I might get a night terror once a month at the most. I'm finally getting some much needed rest and wanted to pass it along. I started with 1 mg. but I think my body got use to the doseage and the terrors became more frequent. Now I'm taking 3 mg. and it's working pretty well for me.

I'm curious, was this naturalpath doctor a Taoist? And I'm glad to hear things worked out for your son.

I was thrilled to see Brad, one of the producers at the Oprah show ask Dr. Oz about his sweaty palms. My new life began on July 8, 2005 after undergoing a sympathectomy performed by the brilliant Dr. Rafael Reisfeld M.D in Los Angeles. I am a complete advocate for the surgery to cure excessive sweating in the palms. I suffered from Hyperhidrosis for over 15 years, never opening up to anybody in regards to what I was experiencing, thinking it would eventually just go away. I had a rare case where my hands would be wet for about 80% of the day, and the condition occurred in my under arms as well as my feet. After opening up to my parents about my concerns as to my future success with this condition, they were all for having the surgery. (Insurance does cover a portion of the procedure, the procedure is roughly $7,000-$9,000). What I mean by future success is feeling confident when I shake a person's hand, not having to wear black everyday to hide the sweat rings under my arms, or having to wear closed shoes because my feet slip out in sandals. In my teens, I dated but refrained from getting close to men because they might want to hold my hand, which leads to questions. Driving a car can be dangerous if you loose your grasp on the wheel because your hands are sweating. When writing notes in college the ink lines would run because my hands were sweaty. I twirled baton and would frequently loose control of the baton because my hands were sweaty. I would frequently wash my hands, leave the table when I would be meeting somebody new, or just hug them to avoid shaking hands. These are just a few things that those with Hyperhidrosis endure. I wish that there was more awareness as to this condition. They do have deodorant to help with sweating under the arms and on the feet, but there is not anything to help with the palms. I do believe there such things as Botox and powders to HELP cure the condition but I do believe that surgery is the ONLY cure. It is great to be on Dr. Reisfelds client list which is available for future clients to inquire first handedly about the surgery. I can say now, I no longer live on pins and needles. I am thrilled to be living life, sweat free.
