cooking with puree's (j. seinfeld)

Posted on Oct 8, 2007

OMG! This is so great! My FIL is currently undergoing chemoradiation treatment for Barrett's esophageal cancer. He has 2 weeks left of the treatment, then there's a rest period. Following this he will go to Cleveland Clinic to have his stomach and the portion of his esophagus that has been cancerous removed. This all happened so suddenly and my husband's family is slowly coming to grips with all of this. The hardest part of his treatment is making sure that he gets the food and calories that he needs. He is fed thru a J-tube for 12 hours each nite. During the day mom (my MIL) is left to feed him. It has been really difficult. After his surgery, it will be even more difficult since he will be eating several small meals a day. We've all been trying to help all we can. Mom and pop are Cincinati Westside German Catholics. Very strong, stubborn folks that don't accept change very well. Mom has had a hard time getting pop to eat food that isn't the normal meat and potatoes kind of stuff. This puree trick may be the answer! I'm going to make some purees for mom and send her the recipes - nah, I'll send her the book! Thanks soo much for sharing!!!

This is a real scandal -- as bad as the guy who Oprah "dressed down" for saying his book was real-- but it was fiction! There is ALREADY a book called the "Sneaky Chef" by a woman named Missy Chase Lapine. IT IS ALL ABOUT PUREEING AND HIDING THE PUREED VEGGIES IN FOOD FOR KIDS!!!! It was published in 2004. THis "lovefest" and false premise of Jessica Seinfeld's "original" (HA!) ideas must be causing that chef and author a lot of heartache!!!!!!!!! I sure hope she SUES SEINFELD, her publisher and HARPO -- who ought to know better about fraud and publishing! Don't Oprah's producer do ANY research? OR, were they too star struck by Jessica Seinfeld???? Funny, Lapines' ORIGINAL book is called the "Sneaky Chef," but the real SNEAKY CHEF is Jessica -- who stole this woman's book! Sneaky! Sneaky!

I don't really care who started with the public education on the use of puree's, this was my first introduction to it and I'm glad to learn of another source. I'm trying the chicken nuggets tonite with my picky 6yo (who, btw, DOES eat her broccoli, carrots, peas, and corn, but she used to eat a lot more!) d

If you are talking about who created this big puree idea first, it was neither of the already mentioned authors.i did this 4 years ago for my then 1 year old and very picky toddler, and i know wasn't the first to do so. Isn't the point that matters, that our kids get there nutrients. i say kudoos to whomever has the thoughtfulness, creativeness or passion to think about keeping our kids healthy.keep up the good works whoever you are and however many of you there are.

Chill out! I've never heard that there is only one way to make a recipe? How many different chocolate chip recipes are there? How many million cookbooks are out there? I could care less if there is another person who has a recipe book like this one... they obviously didn't market it very well. In fact, I wish there were more cookbooks like this! I'm having fun with my kids trying to get them to figure out if there is or isn't a secret incredient in what they are eating. With all the junk food out there, I am glad that Ms. Seinfield is promoting this idea. I heard a long time ago about adding apple sauce instead of oil to recipes. Do you really think Ms. Lapine need royalties for everyone who adds fruit or veggies to a recipe?

Let's face it folks, as a Chef I can testify that Hospitals and Nursing Homes have been making food Pureed (or baby food)
in food mills and Blenders as long as they have been around. Longer if you include Hand Grinding done for Centuries by
many native Cooks all over the world.

I'm surre you can find Cream soup receipes, applesauce, Pea soups and many more in very old Cood Books.

Get a grip and move on with your lifes.

Receipes can not be Copyrighted (except for secret ingred's) just like the Circle.

Check out the page 14 article on the Dr Oz and Death Mess Board, (same author) about mid page.

Natural healing is alive and well.

OMG!!! I could have had a V-8 was the reaction I had when I say the piece on the cookbook from J. Seinfeld. In reading the other comments I guess I could say from the other author as well. As a mom who is always trying to incorporate a few more veggies into my everyday for not just my children but myself I found the information liberating.

All I can say is that right after the show I cleaned out my pantry of some of the veggies that lurked there and I had no clue how to prepare them in a way that would be palatable. I then added each week thereafter a new fresh veggie (this past week I used eggplant, which I had never even tried before now). I have added purees to boxed mac and cheese, even the canned spaghetti and meatballs, I even impressed my co-workers with some in my egg salad.

Tonight my daughters saw me pureeing the broccoli and both thought EWW. So I added a quarter cup of that and a quarter cup of acorn squash to the chopped bbq turkey and the bowl and their plates were completely cleaned. They even made a sandwich with the turkey and string beans. On the side was some mac and cheese with a 1/4 cup each applesauce and zucchini.

It makes me feel better to see them eat so well knowing that a little more nutrition is added with each bite. It has also helped to solve a problem that runs in my family with constipation. One of my daughters inherited this trait and it has taken me now over 7 years to find something that helps.

So to whomever is responsible, Thank you.
