Laundry? Can I really enjoy it?

Posted on Mar 8, 2008 5:20 PM

Ok, I have hated doing laundry for years and haven't been able to get it done. Since I started reading the first three chapters and watched the first class, I have managed to be ok with doing the laundry. Not wanting to hurry through it wishing I could move to the next thing without thinking about being present in the moment while doing the laundry really never allowed me to get it finished. Like what I resisted was persisting. I resisted the laundry and was never able to get it done. When I let the laundry BE and not take it as a personal monster against me continuing to pile ever higher and annoy me enabled me to get it done. I MUST be reading in to this toooooo much! Oh well, at least the laundry is done and put away for the first time in months! LOL!

Such beautiful sharing...much joy arises for you....

May I suggest that you use this as a remeberance

when other things you resist come up...You have proven

to Self & had the EXPERIENCE of Allowing the Present

Moment to be as it is...Allowing the knowing that you

need to do the laundry to be as it is...Big smile for you!

As one.

You know it would be "A New Earth" when we start enjoying doing the laundry! (Especially the putting away part) LOL Really, it would be better if we could learn to enjoy the simplest of things.

Laundry smells really nice right out of the washing machine. Just wish it would walk itself up the stairs and put itself away.

You aren't reading into it too much! There's GREAT book about this very subject!

"After the Ecstasy, the Laundry: How the Heart Grows Wise on the Spiritual Path" by Jack Kornfeld.

Jack is a Buddhist teacher, and I know that you are a Christian, but with an open heart you might find the strength to fold!

Fold? Fold the laundry? I am trying to keep my positive laundry thoughts going. Thanks for the advice. To think all this time I just was controlled by my negative laundry thoughts...lol! My laundry was controlling me instead of being neutral...lol! Thanks for the advice. I do believe in becoming knowledgeable and open minded BUT I have my own beliefs like all of us. I love reading and studying regardless of the subject. I think this book might actually help me get rid of some clutter too! I have read a lot on Feng Shui and clutter and I feel better with less clutter in my life. Laundry is just the beginning!

In the book Jack quotes a variety of spiritual experience including Christian (ie Thomas Merton), so spiritual laundry is not just for the Buddhists!

Have you read the book "Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat?"

I haven't read it - but I'm feeling the need to de-clutter too... especially after reading ANE... my new mantra "Be Present with tossing this junk!"

Hello Laneburnet, The Buddhist call it Working Meditation. I like washing laundry, but I resist putting it away. I will have to ? why I resist the putting away part. I try to treat all my jobs as a working meditation, meaning being in the moment, relaxed and at peace. Doing this, makes the task pleasant, even laundry. Love and Light, so glad you included this post, hope to see more from you.

Thank you Karen. I wasn't really looking at it that way - resisting putting it away. I am going to go put my laundry away, now. Thanks.

"Before Enlightenment chop wood carry water, after Enlightenment, chop wood carry water."

-Zen saying

The difference is in your attention to the present moment!

LOL....Can I be so bold as to modify that wonderful Zen saying for

modern society..."Clean toilets chop up carrots"...I just came from

a 10 day orientation at a Zen Buddhist Monestary I am moving to this

summer...there was no wood or water but I cleaned a lot of toilets

and chopped a lot of carrots"...Big smile...I believe I did it mindfully

because I watched lots of resistance arise...I allowed it to be...

In Peace...As one.

I LOVE LAUNDRY!!! OMG...I love folding it...sorting it....When I do I try to think of all the scriptures I can about clothes and pray for my household. Prov 31:21,22 "When it snows I have no fear for my household; for all of them,my children are CLOTHED in scarlet. I make coverings makes for my bed; I am CLOTHED in fine linen and purple.(when I'm doing washing the bedding) Ps. 45:7,8 Anoint us with the oil of Joy. May all of our garments be fragrant with myrrh and aloes and casia. May my children always be clothed in white and always anoint their heads with oil....Ec. 9:8. I do this with all of my housework. I started this when I used to have my own housecleaning business in Vancouver. I was inside peoples homes, their bedrooms, their kitchens so I started to pray for them as I cleaned and touched their belongings. It was a wonderful ministry! If I was washing walls I thought of all the scriptures I could about walls...tearing down spiritual dark walls and strongholds and building protective ones. If they weren't home I spoke these scriptures out loud. I always got comments on how CLEAN their houses were. It was the AIR, I'd saturated it in prayer. When people come into my house they always comment on how it is brighter inside then outside! I call it saturation prayer. I love saturating my home as I clean it. Housework feels sacred.

That is so cool. I was also nanny/housekeeper, cleaning their home was a great time for me to reflect as well. It's funny, it's seems to always work when I'm cleaning elsewhere. In our home, I sometimes get frustrated. Now that I think about it, much of my clutter is "weighing" me down. Because I really do love the task of housework....and with Tolle's suggestions, I can get rid of some of the baggage, or clutter if you will

Wow. Will you come clean my house and do my laundry. It sounds like God is present in your home because of all your prayer. LOL! I am going to have to try this prayer. Thanks for sharing.

Thats true. It smells great. I guess the putting it away is where I have struggled most. That is true with a lot of stuff in my house. Wish we had a place to share pictures or our laundry! LOL!

I have heard of this book but never really got a good look to see the details of it. It sounds really funny though just from the title. I will look at it next time I go to the bookstore. Thanks for sharing.
