For those who are looking for the pieces on the show, or similar ones at a less expensive price, I'd like to share what I found today- The khaki Liz & Co Weekender pants at Penny's were on the clearence rack for $24.99. The White Worthington Jacket is on sale for $39.99 and I must say very cute! If you like the Red trench coat I found a similar one , that is very cute at Wal Mart this morning for $19.98. It hit about mid thigh has a cute white with black polka dot lining. They also had Navy and Khaki-the difference is the fabric. This one is a "weather resistant" Polyester. I think for those of us with kids or pets, this one is great-stains and dirt will wipe right off. It does not look "cheap". Several ladies picked one up when they saw me with it on in the dressing room. Also, at Penny's I tried on the Levi jeans. They didn't fit me right. Right next to them however were some St. John's Bay Secretively Slender dark wash jeans that look the same, on sale for $17.99. Added bonus of a slimming panel! At Wal Mart I bought a couple of scarves that were just under $6. Another bargain- Payless shoes has their Buy One Get one half off sale going and they had some cute flats.
I think it's a nice change that Oprah did a show for the 'average' consumer. However, I don't think Oprah has shopped lately at SEARS, JCPENNEY, or WALMART. The clothing in the stores are frumpy...........!!! The prints, styles, and the prices aren't all that cheap. The Old Navy is too trendy and young. Where does that leave us to shop? I'm 41 and find it frustrating to shop. Anyone else agree?
I watched the show of Shlumpadinka. Well I am one. I wear my bib overalls. It is really difficult to wear something nice. I got laid off ((2006) a week before Christmas. In 2007 my son was in the hospital 9 times, from February 5 till November , Thanksgiving. The stays in the hospital was 10 to 15 days at a time. My son is terminal ill and was diagnosed since he was 3 years old. My world consist of suction machines, oxygen machines, feeding machines, urianary bags, stoma bags, laundry, cleaning treacha, doctors appointments, etc. With dealing with all of that everyday I can'st wear nice clothes. They would just get ruin. LW
oh my God--I am now a shlumpadinka since moving from NY to south Jersey a few years ago. I always called myself a mishmash but now I know I am really a shlumpadinka. I am a single mom who has gained so much weight, suffer from depression and often don't sleep well, so I have absolutely no motivation to do anything, let alone fix myself up! I have the baggy sweats, stained t-shirts--all of it. Four years ago, I never would have imagined I would fall into this rut again. I had two babies back to back in 1995 1nd 1996--gained some serious weight and had my brother tell me I would be a fat sweat suit kindergarten mother. Well, I proved him wrong once and must now regain strength and confidence to do it again--but how when you feel so lousy every day you can barely function!! Suggestions!!!
i so agree with your post 60susanb on february 20. i wonder what to wear ANYWHERE at 61. everywhere you look you see clothes for younger people, younger bodies. then there are walks through the "dumpy" departments with elastic waists, polyester and so on. i don't want to look stupid -- too young -- but then i wonder if i look just plain dumpy and frumpy. rarely do i see a clothing ad or clothing line for the oldest of the baby boomers. let's face it, my muscle tone (i hate to exercise) isn't what it used to be, especially upper arms, and i usually have 5 or 10 pounds i should lose. i have a closet full of clothes (going back to 1978) but never seem to have the "right" thing to wear -- something that looks great so i look well put together and confident. i live in southwest florida so it's hot and humid. not much covering up in this climate. help! the "shlumpadinka makeovers" was a great program. i'm racing to brooks bros. tomorrow for the white fitted shirt. i think i can wear most of what lloyd boston put together. so what is my problem? i want to look fab but not dressed. and i don't know how to go about it. i'm enjoyed your post. thank you all for sharing a real concern! i agree that oprah needs to do a show about us oldest of the baby boomers! rie123
as a college junior, i would love to be stylish but I have to save money for schooling and neccesary expenses. Often I end up sacrificing style for price, and as a result I am an excellent bargain shopper!
I buy clothes cheap - the most expensive pair of jeans I've ever purchased was $29, if that tells you anything. I try to have a fashion sense but often it just isn't possible. I loved the shlumpadinka makeovers show because its something people of all ages struggle with. I think the larger question is how affordable it is, if people like me just are dirt broke and tens of thousands in student loans!!
56 year old. Shlumpadinka that has never been happy about the way I look. My husband says I am the most beautiful woman in the world... This show was helpful for me.. The two things I will not do are 1. ware make up 2. dye my hair. Why, I do not like the way I look with it on. I think it looks sloppy My hair.. I was blessed with pretty gray hair.
My Shlumpadinka clothing... Well lets just say the show helped me I appreciate what was shown. Most of the time my husband helps me cause I do not know how to shop. This show was good for Granny.
Yes I agree with you.. I use to shop a lot at JC Penney and now I have trouble finding anything Sears (Polyester World) No Thanks... Walmart.. once in a while ... every year or so ya get a lucky break.. IF you look real hard
Shlumpadinkas UNITE Maybe we can help each other.. Finding stores for the over 20,30,40,50 and up crowd that we can afford,,,
Dear "12exeland",
I would like to be a nonprofit attorney also. Right now I am finishing up my Paralegal Certificate and I am starting to study for the LSAT so I can apply to law school.
How do you recommend studying for the LSAT?
Thank you, thank you, for this show on sensible, but classic, and flattering fashions. My daughter and I have practiced NOT being shlumpakinkas for years and find it difficult to convince women that it does not take a lot of money to look nice EVERY DAY. Lloyd is a genius with giving these women styles that flatter and are practical for their mommy-of-young-kids-years and beyond. They look great, and contrary to another show on makeovers, these ladies are wearing comfortable clothes AND shoes. No 4 inch heels will work in their days! Now I would love for Lloyd to do the same for women over 60. I think they have a "uniform" in America that is definitely shlumpadinka...ill-fitted jeans that are too short with beat up sneakers and jackets that reek of "old", no makeup, and hair, well, I don't even have the words! In warmer climes, there are the khakis, shorts or pants, and t-shirts with the baggy arms hanging out...and yes, the sneakers.
I loved the show! I was just going to read the postings and not reply; however, like many of those who posted, I'm 61, short and overweight, and just saw myself reflected in another post -- jeans too short, tennis shoes and old jackets (think 80's denim). Last weekend I went to JCPenney and bought myself the cute white jacket shown, a white blouse similar to the Brooks Bros shirt and some really cheap flats. So I'm on my way to shedding the "shlumpadinka" label and also shedding a few pounds. But I, too, would love to see a show for all of us baby boomers on a fixed income who need fashion help.
How about those men who are Shlumpa's? Any hope. Old football jerseys, stinkin sweats, torn jeans and ripped sneakers and to top it all off Carhart overalls and Dickie Jackets!! Any help to make these fellows over?
I too haveturned into a "Shlumpadink." Last August I had a bi-lateral mastectomy. I've gained 30+ pounds and I look like a mess. I'm a haircolorist and women look to me to give them pointers on style. I'm 47 and I just want to look chic again. Colorgirl
