A New Earth vs. The Secret

Posted on Feb 26, 2008

I'm having trouble reconciling what I've learned from reading 'The Secret' to what I'm learning in 'A New Earth'. They seem to be polar opposites of each other. How do you visualize and ask the universe for the way you want your life to be, or the things you want in your life, and still achieve a state of non-ego? Tolle says that being weighed down by material thinking or defining who you are by what you have or achieve is a roadblock to higher awakening. But The Secret tells you to "go for it". Anyone else notice this too?? Debbie

Have we not learned that "GIVING "is the secret of hapiness? In A New Earth, we are learning to know ourselves and to go beyond. We learn about the human EGO which stand in the way of inner peace & DETACHMENT which free us. In The Secret, the emphasis is on 'DESIRE & GETTING" which enslave us may it be through material posessions, power, pride etc... which feed our ego and blind us to our true purpose here. Colette

I agree with you that it doesn't seem possible to reconcile The Secret with A New Earth, at least as far as removing ego is concerned. The way it worked for me is that I found The Secret at a time when I was really unhappy with my current situation, and The Secret opened my eyes to the possibility that you can actually shape your life with your thoughts. Talk about a paradigm shift! And then, after not really manifesting the things I thought I needed, I was lead to A New Earth, to further my life's journey. So I look at The Secret as more of a stepping stone into this way of thinking, since it opened my eyes to the possibilities of the mind. But I definitely think manifesting your ego's goals and desires will keep you trapped in this physical world and not in the Now - although if you use the law of attraction to manifest good in the world or good for other people before yourself, then I think it works quite well with Eckhart's teaching. Hopefully that makes sense! Peace and love, Amy.

I just got off the phone with my mom and I told her the exact thing....to me...the secret is shallow....and explains who our economy is where it is today....defining ourselves by how much stuff we have instead of our essence of giving....

I totally agree and there are several threads on here that compare the two...the Secret always comes out on the bottom. As one poster said it's like comparing cheese whiz to a fine aged cheddar. I've seen this same sort of ....what do they call it..."abundance" preaching in a lot of televangelists. They tell you that you just have to believe and you receive. This of course justifies asking for your "seed" money for their purposes. And they have the perfect answer for failure. It's your fault - you didn't believe enough.

Ideas are about how one looks at things ... I was never much interested in The Secret because, without reading, it seemed materialistic. I don't think that was the message ... I think that was the message the materialistic world chose to see and portray. If you don't like it, don't read it .... there are so many books ....

I always look for the common denominator...what is the same in everything...and to me.....finding the truth in stillness is the common thread in life....the truth of giving...not the secret of getting...Peace to you too!
