A New Earth = Most Depressing Book I have EVER READ!!!!!

Posted on Feb 18, 2008 9:38 AM

My ‘Awakening' occurred 2 years ago while watching Oprah. A mother and her daughter drove hours to wooded area looking for the car of a missing teenager. They found the car and the girl alive. When Oprah asked the mother how she knew where to pull off the road to begin the search, the mother replied, "The car just knew...the car just pulled over." This moment changed my life. I have always been a positive person but I was not aware of the power of my personal purpose in life. Since then, I have read hundreds of books about my purpose and my relationship with God.

If it wasn't for Oprah, I would have never finished reading Tolle's A New Earth. The first 210 pages of his book is written extremely negative. However, I finished reading it for Oprah and I am glad I did. I read Walter Isaacson's Einstein last year and I wondered if my purpose was somehow directly linked to the greater universe. Tolle teaches us that YES, it is. And that nothing happens that is not part of the greater whole and its purpose. Tolle teaches us that as consciousness enters the world by one's surrendered actions, the awakened consciousness will be empowered to change all aspects of life.

If you are like me: ‘living in the present moment', ‘living in a surrendered state' and ‘enjoying every moment of life', then the first 210 pages of Tolle's book MAY depress you. So, here is a list of my top ten favorite books that will teach you Tolle's principles of ‘inner purpose'. These books are very inspirational and positive.

God Bless Oprah for laying the foundation for a better world for our children.

1) Andy Stanley's Visioneering (this book changed my family's life)

2) Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar's Happier

3) Kay Warren's Dangerous Surrender: What Happens When You Say Yes To God

4) David McKinley's The Life You Were Born to Give

5) Dr. Todd Michael's The Twelve Conditions of A Miracle

6) Andy Stanley's Next Generation Leader

7) Rick Warren's God's Power to Change Your Life

8) Dr. Henry Cloud's The Secret Things of God

9) Andy Stanley's Louder Than Words: The Power of Uncompromised Living

10) Eric Harrison's Teach Yourself to Meditate in 10 Simple Lessons (This book helps me with my special needs child...it teaches you about ‘being in the present' and the ‘importance of breathing'.

Perfect metaphor about the battery of life!

I read something interesting today here are some quotes from Dr. John Hagelin (award winning scientist in the tradition of Einstein) As written in Janet and Chris Attwood's The Passion Test:

"THe most important key to success and happiness in my life is experiencing unbounded awareness, the field of pure spirituality within, and identifying my awareness with the unified field - the universal intelligence that governs the universe. This brings immediate expansion, joy, pure creativity and total support of nature for health and success and happiness in life"

AND:

" People do have freedom- and it's probably the greatest human freedom - over what they give their attention to. And that are will become more central, more important in their life. I would recommend everyone exercise that freedom - to put their attention on projects that are truly worthy, with the potential to bring maximum happiness and evolution to the life and society as a whole."

AND:
"THe more global and far-reaching the project, the more happiness and evolution that project could potentially bring."

AND LIKE YOUR METAPHOR Dr. Hagelin states:
"The exploration of deeper levels of natural law at the atomic and nuclear and subnuclear levels was probing deeper levels of intelligence in nature that were far beyond the realm of material exisitence."
"Ultimately, the discovery of the unified field, or heterotic superstring, was a discovery of a field of pure intelligence whose nature was not material, but pure, self-interacting consciousness".

So... I still have a tendency to 'go solar' and focus on the positive side of energy/life! Wink-wink

Hi angelwitha,

I just wanted to say that I'm sorry you found the book depressing. For me, it has been one of the most uplifting and positive books I have ever read. What IS depressing is the amount of pain and suffering the collective ego is manifesting in the world today. It can only change if we become conscious of it and that is why I love this book and find it very inspiring.

I also found it to be one of the most inspiring books I've ever read. This is why:

We have all this suffering on earth, but we can be rid of it. We are not stuck. We are learning. The very fact that we are recognizing the nature of the ego here and now means that we are escaping the badness!

It's so empowering to know that we already posses that which can set us free, no?

Hello halloannie,

Yes, we are all coming a long way by learning and becoming aware. It is a big step for all of us. I wouldn't say, however, that we have the power to set ourselves free. Tolle mentions this in his book, to be completely awakened or have ego transcendence or whatever you want to call it, is a gift of grace. We can become aware of the ego and its antics and become serious about practicing detachment, etc.

I am curious to know why you say we don't have the power to set ourselves free? Why not? The power lies within us and all it takes is aligning our attention to it which is what we are learning to do in this book. Eckhart Tolle is demonstrating how he does it and encouraging us to do it too. It just takes practices. Every time you catch yourself and stop that ego, you are giving attention to that power and it works. We can feel that freedom through all our joy that comes as we read this book.

Hi lynnehc,

I was referring to the page in the book, 259 where he says the "initiation of the awakening process is an act of grace." He goes on to say "There is nothing you can do about awakening. Whatever you do will be the ego trying to add awakening or enlightenment to itself as its most prized possession and thereby making itself more important and bigger." (259-260)

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I guess I should have looked up the page number before I presented this information.

I still feel drepressed by the way he writes. I am beginning to feel like I am the only person who feels this way. Although I try not to go back to negative, I will post a couple of examples of how his writing depresses me. (No other writer has depressed me like he does. And I read A LOT!)

EX. Pg. 88 Tolle writes: "What is commonly called "falling in love" is in most cases an intensification of egoic wanting and needing."

"WHAT???????????????????????????????????" I said out loud.

ANd p. 89 Tolle writes "THe other expression for "I love You," te amo, which does not have ambiguity, is rarely used-perhaps because true love is just as rare.".

"True Love is just as rare?" Is Tolle a parent? I wonder?????????????? THings that make me go HUUUUMMMMMMMM.....

But this is JUST ONE of the numerous examples of how he makes me depressed.

No wonder he got a higher score on his SATs (over 2 decades ago).

When I first started delving into these concepts about the ego, I became pretty depressed too. Everything I held dear was being questioned and it wasn't very fun to have to look at it. I'm not saying that everything is hunky-dory now but the depression lifted once I was able to recognize certain useless "mental structures" I was holding onto were no longer useful to my spiritual growth. A lot of people I met would say that it was OK for me to put the material down and come back later when I felt like it. Perhaps this is something you could try to, set the book aside for a bit and see how you feel later.

I sincerely hope you won't be giving up and will come back to join in the discussion with a totally different perspective. It still appears quite evident that you are running away from the negative, denying it rather than recognizing it for what it is. You obviously are running away because you are too identified with the pain in you as who you are and you do not know how to deal with it so you fight it. You resist too much. Stop resisting and just be present with it, you'll see it does dissipate. All is Well! There is nothing to fear because fearful thoughts are just energy running amuck. Only you can do this. Nobody else can do it for you. And we are all in the same boat here because we each have our own negative parts that continue to challenge us. Where was that I read, "Your attitude makes the difference in the outcome." Take a strong attitude that you can handle anything that comes along and more than likely you can. As Louise Hay say, "You Can Do It."

Here's a thought to ponder about the ex. you give from pg.88

EX. Pg. 88 Tolle writes: "What is commonly called "falling in love" is in most cases an intensification of egoic wanting and needing."

"WHAT???????????????????????????????????" I said out loud.

My understanding of his quote is this:

The things people do and say for approval and acceptances...SAD...People shouldn't allow their insecurities to blind them from the real truth...Actions speak louder than words and pictures...! One must do their homework, seek (ask questions) but know what you want first so you don't fall for just anyone or anything...!

Women should look for a man that knows how to love and be loved...! A man that can show them his mind first b/c that's what matters in the end after he has shown them his muscles, money and ran his mouth..... yes out of the heart(mind) a man speakth, so what's in his mind should be important to women rather than what's in his wallet...!
I've grown to know that I must be careful of what bait I use to catch a man..! Finding a mate is like going fishing; certain bait will catch certain fish and I don't want a mullet...

P.S.
If each person(male & female) in a relationship know who they are then a long term relationship can work...Only b/c they don't look to others for their happiness , it comes from with-in. Remember self love must come first and forever... never lose who you are just to get in a relationship.. Why you think Jesus didn't get into a relationship; if he did he kept it on the down-low...b/c he knew better than that... Most people only seek to get your energy b/c they are lacking having their own energy.. So be careful who you allow to plug into your socket of power in life..!
