Is this for real? I mean I have 4 kids and this is the last thing on my mind. "ooohh...honey...do these jeans make my rear look big?" Give me a break Oprah. Come on! This seriously can't be for real. Reality is is that you have to be the best you can be. Most of the time, I am driving around my kids to here and there. If someone wants to judge me for my clothes (oprah probably) then this would show me how shallow that person is. To be honest, I wouldn't give a rats behind what they thought of me. I know inside that it is what it is and time is precious and instead of figuring out what I am going to wear to avoid the Shlumpadinka pitfall I am there for my kids to help them as much as possible. I thought Oprah learned from her road trip when she visited the Amish that they said that they can truly say that they are 'truly happy' and she was taken aback from that. Well, the Amish are very simple people. I can't believe Oprah would okay this show. I wonder if she has any say as to what is to be aired. I am by far Amish but I seriously think Oprah has truly lost her way. She's become one of them...the rich women who want everyone to play along with her dumb rich games. It's not about that. It's who you are and how you treat others. Please tell me there are other smart women who are dressed nicely and smartly but don't make it a habit to specifically seek the 'ideal' clothes. I am a writer, photographer, Mother of 4 and I am completely insulted intelligence wise about this show. Go back on the web and relook at the pictures of the women....can we say "cookie cutter"...get real Oprah.... Susan Fichter, Lake Havasu City, AZ

I understand your feelings. I have been there. I continued to take pride in my appearance, always have and always will. I hope that the pride I project will be an influence while I enjoy the view. It's ok to be as beautiful on the outside as on the inside.

Thank you for a great show today. As a stay at home mother of a four month old, I needed the clothing reality check. As I am typing this, I am wearing mismatched fuzzy socks, sweatpants, a nursing tank and a pajama top...none matching....mind you it is 2:00 in the morning, but still!

My question.... Is there any fashion advice for nursing mothers? Since more than 1/2 of women breastfeed their babies, there is a market out there that isn't really addressed except for a few online stores. The problem is that most (not all) nursing friendly clothing out there is not that fashionable. Affordable fashionable maternity clothing is great but nursing tops lag behind...far behind. Seriously though, I would appreciate some ideas of fashions that are nursing friendly. but not frumpy.

Please help us that went from 'It's all about me' to 'I don't have time to pee.' ! We want to look good too.

Thank you for the opportunity to vent.

I don't consider myself a shlumpadinka. I don't wear my sweats, workout clothes or pj's out in public. However, when I go shopping I want comfortable shoes. Tennis shoes are comfortable! I don't want to be seen as a shlumpadinka because I want comfort over fashion! By the way, that patent leather, leopard flat was BUTT UGLY! My take: if it's too ugly to go with anything, it's ugly enough to go with everything!

Finally a make over show people can actually afford and could wear in the day, even down to the flats. Thank you, for doing this. Now can we do a make over for people who live in the frigid temperatures we have to endure on a daily basis here in the upper mid-west. I have to wear 3 layers plus a coat just to stay warm when I leave the house. Last spring I was asked many times if I'd lost weight on the first warm day...I realized just how bundled up I'd been...I looked like the michelin man. But how do you stay warm and trendy? Deb

I agree totally, dear! Don't have time for the Big Questions in Life that keep nagging at us: "do these jeans make my rear look big?" "Are these pants appriopriate for a garden party or the mall?????" Just LIVE!!! Don't make life more difficult than it already is, Oprah!

I must be the worst SHLUMPADINKA I thought the women before looked dressed up compared to me!! I wear the same grey t shirt and blue jogging pants or I might switch up my mom uniform and wear a blue shirt and grey pants. I wear no make up. I had chapped lips one day and I put on lip stuff and the moms in the car line made a fuss over how I looked nice! Are they nuts? I never put lip stuff on again....I never wear make up and if I do my 9 year old son wants to know who died? Because most likely I am going to a funeral! LOL. my blush that I have is 18 years old. I don't buy myself anything. I have holes in my clothes, most of my socks, bras and underwear! I have one pair of dirty sneakers I wear all the time. I have a new pair but I think they are too clean and dressy looking to wear! It's hard for me to dress nice. I don't even have a dress or skirt in my wardrobe. I don't even have a dress outfit not even a dress pair of pants or dress jeans. To me if you wore jeans that would be dressy. My winter coat is a track coat. When I wear a basball hat I look like the comedian Carrot Top but with brown hair LOL! If I looked as good as the before women I would be thrilled! SO I really think I am the worst SHLUMPADINKA!!!!!!

Well, at least your soul and spirit is not shlumpadik at all! I love your story! And isn't it the soul that counts, not the form of your pants or the size of your knee cabs?

Oprah is apparently unaware that the term "shlumpadinka" obviously derives from the Yiddish word "shlumpadik," meaning someone who dresses in a messy, sloppy way -- as in "he's a real shlumpadik." The words schlump and schlumpy also refer to someone who dresses in a messy, sloppy way.
It hurts to hear her unconsciously subsume the term. I'm sure I and lots of other Jews across the United States sat in front of our TVs with our jaws dropping, thinking Hey, there goes a piece of our history. It's important not to forget our ancestors and their cultural heritage, and to acknowledge their contributions. Oprah is so very good about speaking up when she feels she has made a mistake, and we respect her more for it -- I know I do. I wish she would acknowledge that she now knows the origins of her word "shlumpadinka". Surely I'm not the only person who is pointing this out -- I'm only amazed that nobody on the Harpo staff pointed this out before the show aired. When I mentioned to my husband Oprah's belief that she made up the word "shlumpadinka," he said, "I have another term Oprah can make up: oy vey."

Yay! Someone like me! I too am a Single Slumpadinka. No husband, no kids. And when I'm at home, I am also a slob (too-big flannel PJs and men's sweatsocks!). My issue is that I never really learned how to put together an easy, comfortable look. Jeans and a sweatshirt have been a staple in my wardrobe for the past 20 years or more. (youch!) I don't want to look shlumpy, but I don't know how to stop! Oprah was talking about me when she said "You know you're a slumpadinka when you wear your gym shoes with regular clothes." That is me every day....I'm wearing my slacks and a turtleneck and some beat up gym shoes right now! I'm gonna have to go cold turkey and throw out all of my shlumadinka stuff. I'll be wearing the same three outfits until I buy new clothes! (smile)

Good for you in your comments.

I wasn't surprise there would be people who would find a way to put this type of show down because they cannot or will not for many circumstances want clothing like this.

The show was a refreshing chnage from some of the heavier ones. Of course this showwill not be for everyone no more then some of the clothes would be for everyone. When there are shows about babies because mine are grown would not mean she should do a show on babies or whatever.

What is external often times show how we view ourselves internally. Absolutely no I would not want to or wish anyone spend their entire day or life in front of a mirror or worry if their butt is too big when people are dying from starvation everyday. But there can and is balance.

The clothes that were shown one can adapt to even a lower price range then what was shown and those prices were reasonable. I shop all ranges from the Goodwill to higer end stores (clearance of course) and with a little imagination you be surprised how far one dollar can go. I have a classic fitted silk sheath I bought of the clearance rack at Ashley Stewart 8 years ago and recently found a never worn with the tags matching silk jacket at a Goodwill I paid $3.95. My earrings cost more then the entire outfit put together!

And I am a plus size woman with a size 11W shoe size proudly over approaching 60 who do not care to look like a 90 year old matron on a sometimes very restricted income. ( I will graciously accept 90 when it comes, for the record). Fewer clothes, better quality and they will last forever! And I life a little dash and spice in my clothes. I love to catalog shop and wait which happens frequently for the clerance or 35-40-% on one item sales. The most difficulty I have is finding pants with a 33-34 inseam in plus but they are there its a matter of timing.

Hi Oprah, Shlumpadinka? Try Stuck in a slump Mega-shlump-frumpadinka! I love, love, love to watch makeover shows especially when they are geared towards the 40 something Mom's of today. What I can't seem to do is buy and/or shop for clothes to get me out of this on my own. These women looked great, and it was especially rewarding to hear the purchases came from stores within our budget, but I find when I go it alone, I still feel lost. It's almost as if I need someone holding my hand and pulling me away from the rack of oversized-hide-the-love-handle sweaters, because it's always what I go back to. Help!

I am 63 years old, I walk everyday and use free weights every-other day and I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in 2002, after having lost 108 lls. between Sept., 1997 and April, 1998--on my own, I wasn't ill, or a member of any group or club. Unfortunately, large weight loss and weight re-gain has been my lot in life, as I have managed to gain a lot of my lost pounds in spite of the exercise I've been doing for 10 years. I know, it's too much of the wrong food going in!! Those empty fat cells keep calling to be filled up again, and I am obliging!! Now, the shlumpadinka I am guilty of is the athletic shoes with nicer jeans or casual pants. Please remember that some of us have pain issues if we wear the unsupportive-flat type shoes for an extended period--shopping, for instance. And believe me, I have spent lots of money on supposedly comfortable, fashionable walking shoes--they don't do the trick for me. My feet are not mishappen (is that a word?), I do have high arches, and a medium width foot. I had this problem when I was super skinny, too, not just in my fat phases. So give some of us oldies-but goodies a little break and overlook our shulmpa athletic shoes in the outside world--I wouldn't last long on any outing without them!! Pass this on to the shoe manufacturers, please, and thanks for a great program, Mary Ellen, Akron,OH
